Long time reader, need guidance, let me explain...

Hi,

I have been a long time reader of Warrior Forum without ever making the plunge to pay money, and be a full member. I finally decided last night I would buy the basic membership, and then spill my guts, and see what happens. I graduate the University of South Carolina in May with an IT Degree.(I am 25) I have spent a few years trying to make money online. I have read hundreds of posts and comments, and I just need some guidance.

I have seen dozens of posts where people ask help, and while it is very annoying for the Guru's and people that make money online, for broke people aka me, I keep hoping that some guru will be able to guide that person, though most just troll them. Some do provide elements of guidance, but the person is different from me so let me get more specific. I work hard, and if you are going to troll me that I just need to persevere and work hard, well that's BS, because without a Blueprint the architect can continue to build and NEVER finish the house, because they don't know the path to follow. But first a few things about me, as most help sections are very vague.

I own a web design business Kevin Waters Web Design. I accept payments online, and it's awesome, but business has been really slow.(Insanely slow) I got a groupon for 17 for 70 at vistaprint, and purchased business cards, 2 magnetic car signs, and a shirt that advertises my business. I have been referring my business to everyone I meet, and giving cards to even more people. I advertise locally, and online, though only for free as my budget is about $50 left. I also work with pine straw to help pay the bills as well.

Skills:
Photoshop
Dreamweaver
Facebook
Youtube
People Person
Decent Education
I am a giant

Anti Skills
Again I am a giant(blessing and sometimes not)
Landscaping(I am terrible)
Cold-Sales

The part of being a giant(6'8") is great for girls that like tall, dark, and handsome, (bad because of my spare time, but that's another story), but it can be a major hindrance for sales. I can talk to anyone on Earth, as long as I am not selling to them, just talking. I intimidate a lot of people, and many see giant and run, no lie, they just get uneasy with tall people.(This is my experience, if you want to argue this please just PM me your argument about this or anything else I have said so this thread stays on target) When it comes to talking about sales, I am really terrible, so would prefer help in the online category.

What have I tried:
-Selling Clickbank products. I created a ebook and tried to sell it, but I did it wrong, and now the information is pretty outdated.
-I sold as an affiliate, and used articles and youtube videos to promote the product, though I didn't get any clicks.
-People say make a list, but I never get enough traffic to list with, not saying it doesn't work, I just don't know how.
-Online and Offline Promotion of my web design.

I guess I am really frustrated. I know I can make money online. When I started the web design business I put in 12 hour days, for a few months, and made money (though when you break it up to an hour by hour basis the money is much much more depressing) this in mind please please please don't tell me, you just need to work harder. Working harder and working smarter are two different things. I now have the next 3 weeks completely off. I am still pursuing a job-job, still maintaining a few websites, but I have 12 hours a day that I can devote(Monday- Saturday) to anything that works. Please don't refer me to a WSO. There are many I have read, but nearly all don't have people that commented that it worked, and the few that have those comments have comments from years ago. I understand that they information you provide may not be free, and if you want a commission from my work, then you can have it. It is better to have a part of something, then own 100% of nothing.

Also I am white Hat, and white hat only. I am not looking to make money from anything with vulgarity, and shady stuff. Back when I did sales for Verizon(I know Ironic, I seem to do better in sales with a team, and in a store, knowing the person came in to specifically talk to me) I had some money saved up. I knew web design would be a big part of my life, so I purchased the Adobe Photoshop and Dreamweaver(CS4 version then). I bought the full version not the student version. Even though the software appearance is the same, you are not supposed to use the student version for Business Purposes, so I bought the one I can use for that purpose. I am a Christian, and I want my walk to match my talk.(Don't think for a minute, that I feel I am above anyone, I do bad stuff too, I just want to do the very best I can, but I mess up just like every other person)For instance if I noticed the cash register person gave me even an extra penny I will feel horrible if I don't go back and give it to her. I want, what I deserve, by working hard.

If there's someone out there who can guide me please drop a comment, or PM me. I need help from honest working people. I will accept troll information, and haters, and people saying just try harder because they haven't read any of my information above, with the hopes that 1 White Hat, Professional can help. I am open to anything.

  • You should try joining a mastermind group. It can really help to interact with like minded people. Seems like you already have a good skill set , web design. There are lots of places where you can advertise like elance and even on this forum. You said you've tried being an affiliate, well keep at it maybe try going for less competitive niches, perhaps review certain products. Hope that helps. Feel free to PM, I'll try and help any way I can.

Thanks for the suggestion, I googled Mastermind Group, and found it, so I will be sure to look through them. I know I can advertise on Elance, but with my limited budget, I didn't think there was anything I could do there at this time. I have tried to make money off Elance, and spent many an hour there trying to do just that, but to no avail.

i have also made some money on Fiverr.com, however the kind of work I did(Video Commercials, not testimonials, there's a difference since I can't give a testimony to liking a product until I have actually tried it myself) did not earn more than 100 dollars for about 40 hours of work, and the benefits just seemed to be outweighed by the cons.

I'm thinking it couldn't be that long as this forum only became a paid forum (for basic membership) in the past few months.

Typically, no two houses are built alike even though there may be some common elements.

Some people like a ranch style, some like a 2-3 story, some need a pool in the backyard.

Some people like to affiliate, some like cpa, some like providing a service, some like making their own products. If you can't narrow down some specifics then no one can really help you. It'll be hit or miss...

You've not given enough information. Honestly, I see some of your skills, but it's up to YOU to decide how you want to proceed exactly.

Selling the services you currently provide is all about marketing - as is any other thing it is you are thinking you are wanting to try. So if you are not making ends meet selling your current services then perhaps that is where you need to start? (that is if you are confident with your current skills and your replies above infer that you are)

You know what, I had a great reply in my mind for you after reading your OP. I even planned to pm you with some help & ideas, not that I'm all that you understand but because some of what you said in your OP struck a chord with me & I wanted to help. But your response to Jill is just plain rude. The WF has only been a paid forum for a few months, before that it was free to join & your rude response makes me wonder why anyone would want to help you.

@cpkc @travlingguy Well I am sorry you feel that way. I felt affronted by Jill, as I assumed she was trying to provoke me. I tried to become a member of the forum about a year ago, after reading the articles for a year. Each time that I tried to join, the Moderator message that I posted came recurring. I could not join without paying a fee.

The problem with the internet is I can't tell what your intentions are, and you can't tell mine. I honestly thought Jill was trying to be-little me hence my response.

@Jill I apologize Jill if that was not your intent, and for my reaction if again that was not your intent.

@travlinguy I just looked up what chip on your shoulder means and I am not sure that it applies here. "The concept is now metaphorical, describing people who nurse a grudge or grievance that readily provokes fury or disputation." I don't nurse a grudge or grievance against Jill or anyone else(besides maybe an ex-gf but that's another story) I really thought she was trying to make me feel like I hadn't thought through what I had said, even though I spent time writing it, even moving it to Notepad to make sure it looked good first, because I am not good at writing, and this writing now, probably has mistakes, because I am trying to write a reply before your mods delete my thread

Ohh, a Mastermind Group is just a group of people with similar interests, that share advice and experience. You can find some for internet marketing under the Local Meetings, Mastermind Groups, And Forum Events just scroll to the bottom of the main page.

I see, Fiverr is a good way to get some start up cash but if you have more time you should try building niche blogs or promoting your web design business on forums maybe offer discounts or other promotions.

Feel free to PM or add me on Skype.

Goliathstwin, if you are good at design (photoshop) and coding (dreamweaver) then you could make some extra passive income by selling web design on the Envato marketplace.

It's free to join but they get a commission on each sales you make.

It'd be a good extra passive income for you as well as a good way to promote your web design.

    @Everyone
This is the post I am referring to. I read on WF for a year, without joining, even for free, as any type of member, and then when I went to join in 2012, this is the message that kept popping up:

    http://www.warriorforum.com/warrior-...id-status.html

The date on it is 2009 so I assumed that it was enacted in 2009.

I am sorry if this is false I can only act on my experiences.

The biggest mistake you made was to assume people were trying to provoke you. That’s a bad way to approach things, especially on a forum as valuable as this. I would imagine you have alienated much more knowledgeable people than me with your posts.

Let’s not get too caught up on the paid membership thing. I have to say I had never seen the post you refer to, when I joined the forum it was free & the first I heard about paid membership was a few months ago. There may have been a time in the past it was paid but from May 2011 to when I joined to sometime in the last few month it’s was supposed to be free(as far as I know). That’s not saying you were not getting these messages, just that we all thought it to be free so we don’t understand why you were getting these messages.

I don’t know why you took Jills post the way you did but I kind of understand, just like I assume you understand the way I took your post the way I did, if you read it back. When reading someone’s comments on the net it can be hard to get to the real meaning but I think if you read Jill’s post back without the expectation of negativity that you had, you will see that it was actually a good & helpful post.

What Jill is saying is that without more information it’s difficult for people to point you in the right direction, but the biggest question I can think of is just how much money do you need to make online & what exactly do you want to do?

You mention in your OP that you do not want to lie or deceive for money, I commend that as I am the same myself although not for any religious reasons but just that I am a do unto others person. What do you enjoy doing & just how much money do you need to make? The amount of money you need will directly impact the methods you use in my experience. I run an offline IT consultancy in the UK & that provides me with 70% of my income but it takes up around 95% of my 60 hour working week. I want to reduce that & I am happy to reduce my income accordingly as long as I feel I can make a sustainable income I am willing to reduce my monthly earnings & increase my free time. What is it you need to achieve?

Without a solid goal & a reason for that goal you will thread water. Knowing how much you need to earn to be comfortable will help us(me) give you some idea of where you should be looking with regards to making money online.

P.S. some mastermind groups are the key to success, but others are just a very expensive (as in $3000+ rip off) please be careful. There are a lot of people out there that care about getting your money rather than your success.

@cpkc you are right of course, and I am glad you took the time to respond again. When I saw Jill say about the cost bit, well I thought oh great, here it comes. But you are right, Jill had a lot of valuable information to say, and I have corrected my initial reaction to her comments, to be a little less improper.

I am used to an ice cream sandwich approach. When I hear criticism I tend to react um....strongly I guess. Usually I hear and give criticism such as:
      A. Good Job
      B. You suck and need to improve here and here
      C. But Good job

The cream ironically is the part that should sting with the chocolate coverings making you feel better.(It's ironic because I like the icecream part the best) So Let it forever be known I apologize for my raw reaction, and anyone that has taken offense please accept my apology
      __________________________________________________ ____________________

So starting fresh-ish, I am looking to make my full-time income online. I have $50, in the bank that I can use for any purpose. I design websites, and advertise bales of pine straw for a friend which I get a commision from. I don't have a large income, sporadic at best, non-existent at worse.

      I have designed 4 websites;
      Kevinwaters.com
      MichalskiLandscape.com
      MichalskiLandscapeServices.com (He wanted an upgrade)
      SouthTechMachine.com

All of them were one time deals, except one which I get $20 a month from.

I really don't know what to do anymore, and I guess lost might even be the right word. Richard has given me valuable advice which I intend to take him up on. But I could always use more help.

I guess I was looking for how people have made money online. I see so many people talk about how " You can make money with this product doing this this and this" but what's real and what's not. Plus a lot of the ways they talk about making money I find really idk unethical, and I want to keep my ethics intact, because money is great but it's not everything. I was going to buy a WSO, because I just want a blueprint, but almost all have great sales pages, but not a lot of people commenting how it had worked for them. Almost all comments on WSO's, that I have read, say how great the information is, and how sure they are that they can make money from them, but not that they actually had. I can do a lot of things. I have a great deal of willpower, and though I do react quickly and sometimes without thinking it fully through, I take action.

      My Goals are this:
      1. Starting out I would love to make a dollar or more online while I sleep.
      2. Make $100 in a week
      3. Make $100 a day
      4. Regularly make $100 a day, and sustain at $3000 a month.
Once I am at this level I can switch to doing it with no other job attachment, and want my ultimate goal to be $4000 a month regularly. (This is the final goal)
For my area of the US, make $48k a year would pay for everything, needed, and I don't need or even particularly want more.

I don't want to be rich, just pay for me and my family, which thankfully right now is just me.

I don't expect to do any of this overnight, and I can do Fiverr and make $4(because they keep 1) but it's a service like what I can do with my website. I am looking for way to make money without me having to do a service each time, but I am more than willing to put in as many hours are necessary upfront to make it happen.

I would focus on listbuilding if I was you....any mis step is a positive learning step in the right direction as far as I am concerned.

1 year from now you will not be talking about how Google slapped you and you will have a valuable asset...your list.

        -Art
Hey Art I like the play on words, and yeah slingshots and Random guys named David are not my friend. Your suggestion is good. I just need to figure out that whole funnel bit for list building. I have the blueprint in my head I think:
        1. Research low competition keywords that I am interested in.
        2. Buy the website
        3. Build a capture page, while offering some kind of freebie, to get more captures.
        4. Drive Traffic to the page.
        5. Have a weekly newsletter offering the people of that page valuable information.
        6. Incorporate CPA into that weekly newsletter.

I still am a bit hung up on part 1 and 4. I know the theory of driving traffic and heck KevinWaters.com, my website is Number 2 on Google for the keywords Kevin Waters with 55+ million results, awesome, but the keyword Kevin Waters is only searched about 20 times a month, so less than awesome lol. I guess right now I am trying to figure how to build a bankroll before I commit to more long term strategies. You know what I mean?

          Alright Kevin,
You're at a panic stage because sh*t just ain't working. Slow down, take a deep breath and find a good solid mentor. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, try Tiffany Dow. Her site has a bunch of honest, upright, dedicated folks (like me) who care about each other.
You said you can talk, just not sell. But you've got it bass-ackwards. If you can talk to anyone you CAN sell. Just talk to people like a normal conversation. You're not selling, you're offering good, helpful advice that they were looking for anyway. Good luck.

            Kevin,

Please take my critique positively, every word is trying to help.

I think the main problem is that the bulk of your marketing activity is advertising the web design company. It's positive that you're taking action, but before spending money on advertising you should make sure that your site is spot on.

And to be honest, it needs work.

There isn't much proof, from your site itself, that you're a designer.

You have no logo. Your 'Kevin Waters Web Design' text looks pixelated as the featured post graphics below (To Meta / Web Design etc). The To Meta and Web Design graphics, which are side by side, are not the even the same size. Also, you should be utilising these graphics to show your graphic design talent, black text on white background doesn't cut it.

The copywriting needs work and the use of tables is old school. The sites in your portfolio also use excessive tables and look dated. I would update the site before you spend any money on driving traffic.

The positive is that you've got something online and you're a worker, which puts you ahead of a lot of other 'broke' marketers.

I would honestly check out Screenlicious and the like for inspiration and try and make your own site a bit more modern. Maybe study the copy of some of your competitors and write content that is a bit more compelling. If so do so, you might find a more positive outcome from your advertising campaigns.

Your skillset is well suited to marketing. Consider creating your own products - graphics packs are in great demand if you really do have the skills in photoshop that you claim, you can create packs to sell. Alternatively you could create smaller packs to give away and build your list. If you choose the later option, you can upsell other products to them as an affiliate.

Consider connecting with like minded people on Facebook and Skype. Maybe you could provide graphics and web solutions while they do the marketing. Team up with people who have complimentary skills to your own.

You have the skills to do something, definitely. But you just need to position your offer better than you are right now.

            Best wishes,

              Hey,

First Thank you, and I do take it positively.
              2. I have never heard of Graphic Packs until today. This is amazing. I YouTubed it, and never thought of packaging all my pdf backgrounds that I have made or fonts to sell. That just never occurred to me. It's awesome, and I am going to start on organizing it right away.
              3. As for my website, regretfully that is after a major overhaul that I have it where it is lol. It is currently in it's 6th iteration, over 3 years total trying. But the graphics I can def. work on, Good call.

              Thanks.

Hey Thanks for the reply. Breathing is def. a good thing, because I was started to go into a panic with yesterday. I am checking out Tiffany's Site right now, and in a few minutes when her squeeze video is buffered enough I will check it out. I have DSL but it might as well be Dialup lol.

I never really looked at selling that way, so that's def. interesting.(I put def, because while I can spell definitely that was the first time that Chrome didn't say I spelled it wrong) When "Offering the good helpful advice" should I make a video or have a FAQ or both, or just have a long conversation typed out?

            Thanks!

You stated you are a giant.

    You create videos.

You've looked at selling on Fiverr.

    Hmmm...

How can you combine those two things to offer something unique to people on Fiverr?

Use your tall status to create unique video greetings?

Brand yourself The Giant (something more creative).

Or, you can sell Kindle ebook covers (make samples to show people you can do a good job)

Or, you can create logos (lots of demand for these).

You already know how to promote a service by word of mouth and social media.

Create something that has a buzz factor (creates immediate interest and excitement) and spread the word.

Looking at your site, I don't think web design is gonna do much for you.

If I understand YOU need money!! There is a great post on WF today about other places you can join for free that compete with FIVERR. (use the search)I would start there. You have the skills, can deliver a quality product and generate revenue quickly. The one thing I have learned in life it NOT to make important decisions when you are stressed for money.

Take a look at my blog. See how I'm just talking to people. I'm not monetizing it yet so I have nothing to sell you. My goal is to give away as much as I can.
Let me steer you to someone else who I think is fantastic at this "tell don't sell" idea. Andre Chaperon. Dude is slicker than owl sh*t. I don't know if he's still offering Autoresponder Madness and it's pretty expensive anyway. But just to read his email sequences is a golden lesson in themselves.

Hey, Thanks....I found the post by searching like you said, but I have bookmarked it now all the same. I have already started looking them up and seeing what I can add to the sites for a basic price. I think the Font's and PSD files I create will be my best bet as a a starter pack for Photoshop or Photo Editing tools.

Whatever you were successful at on Fiverr, start there. Also add gigs that you have the skills but other people did well. You'll know soon enough if you are on the right track..personally, I don't think the fiverr customer is sophisticated enough to use WP.

I'm going to echo what everyone else has said.

If you are chasing money you are in for a long hard journey.

Become a master of one thing and stick to it. Sounds like you may have an incredible USP (Unique Selling Position). Use all that you are, your talents and who you are to sell yourself and what you have to offer.

Make a bunch of videos, where you educate people about web design and websites. Include a link to your website in the video and in the description of the video. Use the form: http://yourwebsite.com and tell people to click it for more info.

Ratchet up the customers you have and ask for referrals. Offer to cut them in on the action...this does not have to be with money but with free services that you offer.

Are you a member of a church, or a non-profit group? Does your community have a food bank or homeless shelter? Offer to help them with doing a video or give them a webpage on your website. Put a link and message such as: "this page provided by yourwebsite.com, as a community service."

    Be helpful to everyone.

Know that when you give back...you get back.

Give back and be helpful. Use your honesty and integrity as a way of showing people your true self.

Become active here at the WF. Help when you can. Read, study and learn.

Please lose any negative attitude you have. Be positive, always. Be able to take both positive and negative feedback. Don't take anything said to you personally or as a dig.

Turn it all around and know, as you have found, there are some incredibly helpful Warriors who have already offered to help you.

Stay the path, and don't ever give up. Be well, stay well and carry on...
You cannot help but be a complete and total success!

You got a pretty very well skill set. Web design is sure to be your biggest asset in life. But the way you advertise, it must have been massive to. Please advertise your skills to many and top advertising website. Include local too. Don't just limit yourself. You have the skill though.

You list a good skill sets thats in demand - Have you posted your services under Warriors For Hire? What about on www.elance.com or Freelancer.com - Hire Freelancers & Find Freelance Jobs Online as well? You should also Google for regional web design companies and introduce yourself as a freelancer who's willing to help when they're short staffed or against a deadline...

Why not also Google for local businesses and look for websites that are out of date (look for say a 2009 or 2010 copyright!), or businesses that havent secured their Google Places listing yet? I think a mentor is definitely a good start, learn from someone who's done it... Some good names have been mentioned above - also look at Alex Jeffries, he's launched some good WSO's lately... Good luck!

Thank you all, and I agree. I will be spending the next 3 days straight working on advertising. Spending all my time(8 hr+ days) on free classified ads. Craigslist, mostly, though also with a bunch of free local ones. I am going try my own personal campaign, and if that doesn't start working by day 3, switch to a different tact. I will keep you all apprised on how it goes. Who knows? Maybe if it goes well, I can start giving out advice
