Track Forum Signature Squeeze Pages?

Hey folks,

Trying to find the best way that I can track where my traffic is coming when landing on my squeeze page or my website. Any good techniques/programs out there?

I was thinking I'd have to make a new opt-in box for each landing page for EACH forum I am on in order to keep track of how much traffic comes from that particular signature link (i.e., one on djforums.com and one on Serato.com).

Thoughts?

Thanks!!!

    1. Install Google Analytics on your site.

    2. Add a value at the end of your links such as http://www.google.com/?id=wfsig

    3. Look through your Google Analytics at the pages people have been viewing on your site and any that arrived on the url above came from your Warrior Forum sig. Do the same for any other link you want to track.

OK so you're saying add special ids at the end of each signature's url? Then Google Analytics will be able to tell what signature the squeeze page was accessed from? How would I track that using Google Analytics though?

As I said above. Go to Google Analytics, look at the pages that have been accessed on your site and wil show you each of those links and how many times they have been accessed.

Will told you one of the easiest ways to do it.

You could also set up a specific landing page that you point just your sig links to.

            It's actually VERY simple.

If you have Google Analytics setup on your website and you then go and look at your Google Anaytics, specifically the section 'Content > Site Content > All Pages' it will show you a list every page on your website that has been accessed and all the stats about those pages -- how many people accessed that page, how long they stayed on the site, etc.

            It looks like this:

See on the right hand side it has a list of pages? See the second one there that says '?id=sig'. By adding that to the end of my url I know that anyone who accessed that site with that url came from my signature. I could create another id for a different banner, any traffic source you want to track. Then when I look at my analytics I can see exactly how many people accessed my site and what url they used to access.

You could set up and link to a different landing page for each traffic source and they would show in this pages section so you would know where people came from. But who wants to do that? That's why we simply use a php value at the end of the url such as ?id=whatever as it means you can send all traffic sources to the exact same url but that additional information will allow you to see where those people came from.

            Make sense now?

Ohhhhhhhhhhhh. OK, that makes so much more sense now (I'm a visual learner, so that picture REALLY helped!).

OK, so, for example, say I have http://www.mywebsite.com/landingpage/?id=forumsig for the URL link in one of my signatures. So, this will automatically track that URL (the one that ends in ?id=forumsig) on Google Analytics? Just want to ensure that I got it.

However, I am confused... so I don't need to add that particular URL (the one that ends in ?id=forumsig) to Google Analytics though? GA will automatically start picking up that URL?

Thanks so much for the help. I really appreciate it.

For those of you who are reading this and want a summary, here it is:

              URLs:
The BEST way to go about tracking your links is using Google's URL Builder, and then shortening that URL with the Google URL Shortener.

This will keep your links clean and simple.

              Tracking (Google Analytics):
Check out WillR@'s post that I reposted at the bottom of this post. It has a great explanation on how to track your URLs using Google Analytic's Goals feature.

I am a little unsure about Prosper 202, but I think that Google Analytics will do just fine. Anyone have input on Propser 202? Please post for me/other readers if so!

              Thanks all for the contribution!

The '?id=' part of the url is just a value you are adding on to the end of the url -- it's not a separate page in the real sense of the word. So as long as you have GA installed and tracking on your page mywebsite.com/landingpage, it will pick up any values you put at the end of that url and they will show as different pages in GA.

    So you might have:

    mywebsite.com/landingpage/?id=banner1
    mywebsite.com/landingpage/?id=banner2
    mywebsite.com/landingpage/?id=banner3

Also keep in mind that it doesn't HAVE to be 'id'. You could use something like:

    mywebsite.com/landingpage/?r=banner1
    mywebsite.com/landingpage/?r=banner2
    mywebsite.com/landingpage/?r=banner3

The main things that have to be constant are the question mark (?) and the equals sign (=) but the other values can be changed to anything you like.

Another easy way of doing this: clickcounts on bitly..

You could just use a bit.ly link.

That way you can see the number of clicks and where the clicks are from?

    I hope that helps

Sweet, thanks guys. So, if I used the bitly link I would just type in, for example: mywebsite.com/landingpage/?id=banner1, and it would track that specific banner?

Or would I not need to add the ?id=banner1? If not, how would I have multiple bitly links for one site?

Finally, I don't know about this option because it will be annoying to trace which bitly link goes to which signature as they all kinda look the same, you know? With the mywebsite.com/landingpage/?id=banner1 approach, I will be able to distinguish what signature I put the link in as I can "note" it by changing the id or banner1 to say the site it is on. I would not be able to do this with the bitly approach, right? Maybe I could have the bitly link distinguishable, and in that case, please tell me how to do so!

Get into the habit of using Google's URL tool.

    URL builder - Analytics Help

Create trackable links using that and everything shows up within GA as campaigns.

Create a spreadsheet to note all of your naming conventions before you get started. Keep them uniform, and logical. Otherwise you'll end up confusing yourself with id tags everywhere.

I like the idea of this... however, the URL is extremely now though. The ?id=keyword that WillR gave me above seems more practical.

BUT, is there any benefit to using Google's URL builder instead?

      Thanks!

    I keep things dead simple

I just clone my main squeeze page and in the web form i just name it the traffic source which i am using for that web form

i use optimize press and i just use the "copy to a new draft" feature and it clones the page

i have separate squeeze pages for every single traffic source and also a separate sales page for every single traffic source too

you need to track everything to see what your biggest profit funnels are

This would have to be the most overly complicated and non sensical way possible.

So what are you going to do after several years of tracking multiple sources? Have 5,000 tracking pages on your site? What a headache.

Im sure that would lead to duplicate penalties eventually, too.

we all have different ways of doing things John

too be honest I don't care about any duplicate penalties because I am not interested in getting traffic from google anymore and what I have found so far is that it's never been a problem so far anyway

Yes there may be different ways of doing things but this works for me and it's effective

    Of course there is.

If you are tracking from multiple sources using a variety of mediums and ad platforms, how on earth are you going to know...

    1. what email made the sale?
    2. what keyword made the sale?
    3. which video made the sale?

    ...and so on

Use the Google URL tool, then use the Google URL shortener.

    Problem solved.

As I said, learn how and better yet WHY you should be using the Google URL tool.

Also try the Wordpress stats that are found in the Jetpack plugin. I've found that it picks up things that Google Analytics doesn't and gives you another set of numbers to judge your site against.

The method I showed you originally is exactly what the Google url builder does. It just appends values to the end of the url. I showed you one example with my code. But you can append as many values to the end of any url as you want.

      Example:

      mywebsite.com/?source=warriorforum&type=banner&&myfavoritemeal=i cecream

You get the point. This is just basic php and you can add as many or as little values as you want. All you need to do is add the & symbol between each value.

It would take a bit of programming. You would make your squeeze page with PHP and add a parameter for instance

    mydomain.com&id=wf

Then have PHP send the id to the form as a hidden input. That is one way to track it.

Or just put Google Analytics on the page and look at referral traffic.

    Hey @John Romaine

When use the custom Google URL and the Google URL shortener, it doesn't show up correctly in Google Analytics. All of the page views are going straight to my landing page without the custom ID. Do you know why this is?

I place my URL into Google's URL Builder, and then shorten that URL with the Google URL Shortener. After that, I placed those shortened URLs on some Google Ads that I was running.

After getting about 200 hits, I paused the campaign to see how it would work on Google Analytics. However, once the reports came through, I only saw those hits on my squeeze page URL without the specific ids for my campaign.

Its directing it to the squeeze page, but instead of recording the specific URL for that ad, it is counting it under my squeeze page without the specific ids. Does that make sense?

Hang on, now you're talking PPC.

That's outside my area of expertise dude.

Doesn't PPC have fairly accurate tracking anyway?

Just double check the parameters are being passed (in the address bar) when you hit the destination page.
