What frustrates you most about:

1. List Building
2. Internet Marketing generally?

For me, my list building frustrations stem from all of those "gurus" who tell you that "the money is in the list" and proceed to sell you ways of getting big lists that don't convert. the money is in buyers, pure and simple.

My biggest frustration in Internet Marketing generally are the snakeoil salespeople who sell shiny objects and lull people into failing to realise that internet marketing is a business, same as any other. It took me a lot of wasted time and money to figure that out!

Your turn - what frustrates you?

Well, it is true that if you send wrong emails to customers they won't buy....
But hey, appsumo has hundreds of thousands of people on the mailing list and I see it makes them huge money. Why? They email right emails

But you are right it's not easy to do.

    My frustrations that:
    1. It takes so long to make money. (but then it pays off when you do things consistently. Of course you need to like what you do to do it consistently )

    2. Speed of expansion. (but it's not too bad)

    My frustration?
Well...I have read quite a lot of things about IM and I still can not find the the success formula for myself :-)
I will keep trying, of course :-) I will just have to figure it out for myself, there is nothing anyone else can do for me at this point.

It is actually a lot harder than people make it out to be. It takes time, and A LOT of effort.

List building and lead conversions are very frustrating for me...

I'm getting leads but they're not converting at the rate I'd prefer. I
usually do solo ads daily to my existing list of leads but for some reason they don't convert as well. It's like I just want to ask the leads "why the heck did you guys even opt-in in the first place!

There's a few other things that frustrate my about IM, and lead conversion is the biggest one for me but I just try to work at getting good at one thing first before I try to become a master of all things marketing.

Freebie seekers, or people that otherwise won't open my emails...when they kick ass.

    2. Internet Marketing generally?

Tight wads who think everything should be free, or that anything that costs more than $10 is a scam. These are the same people who probably see every new movie that comes out, but can't buy an info product? Pathetic, honestly.
That's about it I guess. Oh, and people that think IM is only about MMO/IM "schemes". Ignorance is quite irritating.

Probably to get your freebie. That's why running solo ads to a squeeze page to get a freebie is rubbish method of building a list. People know nothing about you when they opt in, they just want the freebie because it's free and then will save it on their hard drive and never look at it let alone open any of your emails...and why should they you are a nobody to them. By tomorrow they will have forgotten who you are and delete your emails or worse mark them as spam.

It's much better to build an email list around a blog / website or paid product so people are ending up on your list for a good reason, because they liked your blog and content or because they actually wanted what you were offering not just to get something for free for the sake of it being free.

Your list will be much smaller this way more than likely but it'll be much more responsive too.

Sell products and then everyone on your list will be a buyer.

    Nice thread. My frustrations are:

    1. List Building: I hate seeing complaints. In my opinion if people sign up to your list, they shouldn't complain, period. I have managed to bring my complaints to around .1%, but I still hate when I see the occasional complainer when sending a broadcast.

    2. IM: Too much to do and too little time. I have many niches and I have new amazing ideas every single day. I have to discard most of them in order to focus in what I'm doing right now. I wish I had more time to focus on this even more.

What bothers me is people who believe that building a list is done for free and don't need to test, learn and grow. Basically what you said in reverse.

People run around screaming scam and snake oil. Yet if they go back and look at some of these junk products after they have success. 9 times out of 10 they will see that it wasn't the system at all. It was their lotto winning mentality.
Most people buy in IM out of desperation. That is why push button is so attractive. Can you make 10k a month by pushing a button? You sure can, but it takes up front work and you may have to push that button a few times. Yes there are junk products out there!

There are also a lot of awful mindsets out there as well. What do you mean there is an OTO you scammer? Well when you go to get that free 15 point inspection don't they usually try and up sell you to an oil change and engine flush? Never heard of anyone calling McDonalds a scam yet they make millions a year with one $.75 up sell per customer.

    Moral of the story:
Tempered expectations, right mindset, proper plan and execution. Add to that due diligence when buying and people would reach their goals way faster and stop blaming people on their way. IMO

I agree, there are a lot of BS gurus in this industry. But one thing I've learned over the years is that the figures they tell you, you could make are all valid. But the time in which they say you could make those figures are what is mostly BS. Anyone could take their business to 7 figures, but it ain't going to take 3 months to do so. It's just like any other business. It takes a whole lot of sweat... Making a whole lot of mistakes... And being both patient and persistent for a long stretch of time.

What frustrates me most about marketing is the time it took to "GET IT" these products that people sell you are far from "snake oil" they will work for some just maybe not for you. Marketers offer diversity in their products for this reason. I'm just now starting to do well and while it took me long and the process was painful I have arrived at success due to a product that I purchased that made things just CLICK. I already have over 20k page views today (primarily because of vigorous bookmarking last night on a new blog post) and 4 weeks ago my blog struggled to get 50 page views in a day. Marketing success can be elusive but once you obtain it, all that you endured was worth it.

It has taken me a long time and a lot of money - the trouble when I first started was I didn't know who was genuine and who wasn't so I wasted a lot of money on Shiny Objects. Many were rubbish - a few told me what to do; even fewer told me how to do it.

And I never really got moving until I stopped buying Shiny Objects after coming across Rich Schefren. Having a mentor/coach has made a real difference, and eased the frustrations mentioned earlier!

Well done on getting those 20k page views - how many of them will buy from you?

    I agree!

Individuals who sell products/services give you bits and pieces of information but never everything you need to be successful.

Those who have found success in internet marketing invest a substantial amount of time and money in their education and then put forth the necessary effort to achieve their desired results.

The thing that frustrates me is the continuous claims of major money... without a site, product, phone, internet service, or even a heart beat. Then alot of newbies go and try the same thing - then fail miserably. But i dont see this practice ending any time soon.

Can not agree more with that ... I see WSO's of people claiming 3-4 figures income/month and whatever ... The first thing which comes to my mind is that if he is earning so much then why will he bother to take this headache of providing this service to others, rather than scaling it for himself ?? ... (I know there are some genuine people there too but its very difficult to find them now ...)

        Exactly.

There are a lot of people (I'm sure) that do okay, but in my experience, (and I've spoken with a LOT of people that work online, and the vast majority of them are struggling to make $100 a month.

This is the unfortunate problem about this industry that everyones "too scared" to talk about. Its not easy to make money online. Well actually, I should rephrase that - its not as easy as what certain people want you to believe.

This is why there are millions of people selling you BS at $7 that promise $20,000 in just a few months.

The only way they're making money is by selling the dream. The know it, and others doing the same know it. And guess what? People buy it because they're desperate to find out "what the secret is".

        There is no secret
        - except f'ing hard work.

I wish I could help more people and get that point across. I do my best in here to give solid actionable truthful advice - but more people are interested in buying shitty $5 WSO's that teach them nothing and leave them dissapointed.

And so the cycle continues. Round and round.

Shhh, John - don't mention hard work. Effort is a dirty word these days!

It's interesting that one of the most successful mentors doesn't advertise much, yet his client list includes most of the big names in IM. he doesn't talk about himself in forums like this; he just gets on with his work!

I don't have that many complaints about IM. I ignore people that are idiots and focus on the fact that I can make a lot of money without having to dig ditches or swing a hammer.

But I'd be lying if I didn't get a little annoyed at certain things. My biggest ones are:

    1) Like John said, 95% of the people (probably 99%), are not making money. This forum (every forum) has a lot of charlatans that follow the mantra of "fake it till you make it".

    2) I hate when people talk as if they know something when they are just repeating information read in a book or something. Something like "the secret is to get an army of affiliates". Whenever someone says "army of affiliates", I know they are just spewing garbage they've read elsewhere.

    3) Gurus in general. I don't mind some salesmanship, but I think it should be a reflection of how you would sell someone in person. Most of it is so over the top and filled with lies.

I stopped listening to all the "gurus" a long-time ago. They merely parrot each other. There are so many "social media experts" now that claim to have the magic solution. Just because you know how to post a Facebook update or tweet doesn't make you a star!

The only thing that counts is conversions not the size of your list. Do people trust you? And will they buy? Forget about everything else. It's just the echo-chamber of the guru chorus.

The problem is, there ARE a lot of experts that really are very knowledgeable. They dont call themselves guru's though, because thats wank factor.

But they are out there. My mentor is one of them.
