i recently bought HelpMeGetRipped.com from godaddy.com. I am a member of IMwithJamie and the last webinar I was on, Jamie told me I could sell the domain for 20k. I find this really hard to believe and am just looking for some extra input on this and how I could actually sell it for that much considering I only spent 2 bucks to register it. Thanks.

    Hi JoeyB9,

Well, selling JUST the domain for $20,000 seems far fetched. I think perhaps that the point Jamie (not sure who he/she is) was trying to make that this domain has great potential which it probably does. "Getting Ripped" and other bodybuilding type of sites do really well because there's a big advertising and affiliate market out there with big profit potential. Most health-related niches are that way.

So to make that $20k you take that domain name, build up a GOOD site, with AMAZING content, set up your affiliate deals, set up some banners and bring in the cash.

After that, once you show some profit and some traffic, yeah... you could sell that property for a very pretty penny.

Your best bet is to read up on domain sales and selling tactics on all the major domain blogs - Elliotsblog, TheDomains, MorganLinton, etc. Check out past sales data at DNJournal (they publish a weekly sales list).

That name is a brandable, which means that you would have to be approached by someone, or find someone to pitch it to, who plans to use that exact phrase to start his/her business.

It's not as direct and to-the-point as a keyword domain like "AbdominalExercises" or "FitnessTrainer.com," so selling it is going to be a little harder.

Could you one day, get an offer for 20k? Sure. But if someone's telling you that promoting the name and finding a 5-figure buyer will be EASY, with VERY LITTLE WORK on your part, they're selling a pipe dream in order to boost your faith in their business.

Now, do big sales happen? Yes, every week. Some of them are brandables, but most of them are short and catchy.

It's certainly possible to yield a ridiculous ROI and make big flips in domaining. I've bought names for $1.99 and sold them for 500 EUR, and dropped $12 Buy It Now on names I've flipped 3 months later for nearly $4,000.

But if you want more sales volume, you have to proactively market your names, and establish contacts in the industry you're selling to - sending emails, making phone calls, etc. And that takes a lot of time.

As the guy above me stated, if this is something you know a lot about, you could develop into a full-fledged site with videos, articles, a message board, etc., and possibly sell your own products or sell advertising space to other trainers.

That also takes a lot of work.

Exactly, you would have to develop this domain into an authority site that generates revenue in order to sell it for 5 figures. Great content that somehow helps you to make money, whether it's through products that you sell, affliliate sales, advertising, Adsense, or a paid membership site. After all the costs of great content, advertising and SEO to make this domain into a gem, you might end up wanting to keep it for yourself in the end instead of selling it.

Yes, you could sell that name for $20k.

But I think it is a little misleading to tell a newbie that such a domain is worth anything.

Any domain name once developed (meaning lots of traffic and revenue etc.) has a value.

Just a "keyword" domain with 4 words is worth less than the reg fee. I say less because most likely you will keep it for a year and then let it expire and most likely nobody else would grab it.

Yes, you can make money with domains (I have done that too: register for $8 and flip 2 days later for $2,500) but a statement like "you can make money with domain names" is comparable to "you can make money as a race car driver". There is a lot of knowledge and experience necessary before you can consider "making money with domains" some kind of predictable source of income.
