Reseller Hosting Business...Please Enlighten Me

Hello...

I have been nursing the idea of reseller hosting business for some time now but will like to get more insight on how it works.

I have chosen to offer free website set up as my main business model to lure clients.

A few questions:

1. When I get paid, will I be the one to also provide the domain registeration through my hosting company? How does it work

2. How do I give or provide them login details to their account?

3. How does Reseller Hosting work and is It better than web hosting affiliate program?

4. WhIch hosting company will be best to work with ?

5. Thank you for youe time!

I do some hosting on my reseller hosting account on a VPS through Liquid Web. I have had the reseller account for several years now, and I offer email and web hosting to my computer repair / IT services clients as a separate service.

The VPS was originally purchased for my own web hosting purposes, and it cost me $60 per month... later, I started hosting client sites too. Then, recently, I started hosting my own web application and needed more RAM, so I bumped up my RAM and pay $100 per month. Liquid Web's support is AMAZING, and I have never had to stay on hold longer than 2 minutes... and all the techs there really know their stuff.

Through Liquid Web, I basically have a dashboard that I can use to set up a new account for whoever I'd like. Once I set them up, they get their own cPanel that they can use however. They have the Fantastico 1-Click WP installs and all that jazz.

I do NOT advertise my hosting services, nor do I "sell" them to my clients. Basically, if anyone asks me if I provide email or web hosting, I simply answer yes. Since I don't actively push this service, I don't have very many clients on it (less than 20) but, it's a little extra money every month and I don't even have to think about it. I charge a flat $10 per month, that I bill my clients for once per year.

I will tell you that Host Gator has a really good hosting package if you want to have a reseller account. Host Gator is the leading hosting service on the Internet.

I don't do any hosting as far as using a reseller account, but my experience with Host Gator is truly phenominal! Now as far as offering domain registration, you can offer that, but your clients can also register their domains from another registrar as well.

    Thanks guys...

I still need more input. Not clear how to give them their own cpanel.

    How do you do that?

That's what a reseller account does. With Hostgator, you will have a reseller control panel where you can create hosting accounts. You would simply create a new account and send the new client the info.

Or you can have them signup through your WHMCS which will automatically setup the hosting account, send a welcome email, and billing.

Another vote for the host gator reseller package.

You get a free license for WHMCS which is the client management brain and billing/ support system. Google whmcs templates and you'll find all kinds of pre made hosting co. designs you can run with

Then you get a web hosting management panel. From here you can set up server space and cpanels, manually (you can also automate the setup process with WHMCS)

You can resell domains through enomcentral... Pretty simple stuff, really. But there are a few moving parts so it can seem confusing.

As a host gator reseller you also get free access to a book that teaches you how to set it all up. Its called 'Your first 1000 web hosting customers' or something like that. That book walked me through the process and offers both theoretical help and step by step how-to help.

There is also the option of hiring someone on odesk or elance to do it for you... If you have more money than time.

As an affiliate you can make 100 per referral... Nice. But, 100 per year per client is awesome! Random annual rebill notifications are indeed worth the effort setting up.

Reseller hosting business only successful if you are also a tech guy. Though your main hosting provider facilitate with all kinds of support but sometimes you also have to jump into to solve the things on emergency basis for your clients. Either you must hire a good administrator to take care of it.

I currently am a reseller and provide hosting and domain registration using a free reseller account for my local clients... they provide my reseller website for free and I can set up my own hosting packages and prices... I get the hosting at set low wholesale prices and have complete backend access to all of my client's accounts... the provider handles tech support for me and my clients... I have full choice of what services and prices that I want to charge... I can purchase the hosting at wholesale or have the client purchase at retail from my hosting site... (I prefer to purchase wholesale and be paid up front by the client) and then they can renew annually at retail from their server admin panel... I have been with this company for years and have never had any problems and the service is excellent... since it is free to have an account it's a great way to get experience as a reseller and like me you will probably want to stick with them... best part is you don't have to provide tech support if you don't want to...

If you are interested in learning more you can PM me if you like and I will send ya a referral invite... don't know if you would like to use something like this so I'll leave it up to you.

    Good Luck.

I've seen and read that the majority of people like the top companies like Hostgator, GoDaddy, Bluehost, 1&1, Dreamhost, etc. The thing is and that most people don't realize, is that ALL of these companies are truly owned by a parent company named EIG. I only learned of this by mistake when I spoke to a few former reps (techs at each of these places) and after essentially cornering them and browbeating them lol - they admitted that this is the truth. So no matter what large company you choose, like the ones I mentioned above, they are ALL going to be very similar in nature and customer support and features as well. Of all the companies listed in previous posts, LiquidWeb is an independently owned provider. Yes, their customer service is really good, and so is their techs (for the most part) I hosted with them for approximately 2 years, until I went to do an upgrade that was exhaustive, even the techs had no idea why it took so long (nearly 5 days). In order for me to completely finish the, what was supposed to be a quick and painless upgrade to a better server, I had to shut down my server for nearly 24 hours so they could finish the migration. In short - they did what they could, but there was no reason it should have taken so long, even by their own standards.

Now onto what I really wanted to post. I have been doing hosting and reseller hosting now for going on about 13 years altogether. I enjoy it, its fun and when you get things set up nicely - there's not much you have to do. I've tried MANY different hosts, some good, mostly bad or full of security holes and many lacking the support and knowledge to effectively run a true "white label" hosting company. Until this past February - I had my fill with all the garbage out there, shoddy customer support, erroneous information and so on. I decided to finally just "do it" and got my own server. I do NOT recommend doing this unless you truly know what you're doing as most servers are "managed" by the hosting provider, I personally don't need that so I got my own and self-manage it. I've had nothing but praise from clients and the majority of clients I have are resellers and a few regular hosting customers. The majority of my customers are from word of mouth advertising.

The book that was mentioned above is available by me - or you can just search google for the pdf version of it - very simple to find. There are numerous hosting companies out there, for individual and resellers alike and I would say that the first thing you truly need to consider is what is MOST important to you? Support? Price? Space? My personal priority is support, then space, then price. You'll run across providers that offer unlimited space (yes, I do too) as its a way to market to people who are concerned about that - but I can 100% ASSURE you that my servers are NOT oversold like many other reseller providers! That is where things get dangerous for you as a reseller. Service is degraded and can cause you some serious downtime and damage your reputation and trust in your customers. I was hosted on LiquidWeb with my own server, paying about $450/mo for one server and now I'm on my own, self-managed server paying much less.

If you're looking for a "full setup" mean one click builds and poof everything is done, there really is none, just like there's no magic WSO that will make you millions with the click of a mouse just once! It doesn't exist - sorry. You definitely have to shop around and seek out the good ones from the bad. Search for reviews online, compare price and ask lots of questions. As I said, theres LOTS to choose from out there and when you find that "sweet spot" you will know you're in the right place. I strive to give every single one of my customers, regardless what they pay the same premium support and several other warriors who are hosted with me know this to be the case. Communication is key and so is trust and reliability. I'm not here to pitch my services, just to let you know what I've experienced in all the time I've been doing it and I've lost sites, full accounts because that reliability wasn't in place!

Please feel free to ask any questions and I hope my personal past experience is informative so you can be make a wise decision. Good luck.

      Matt

Hey I've been in the reselling business for a while and can answer your questions.

    1. When I get paid, will I be the one to also provide the domain registeration through my hosting company? How does it work
When the buyer buys a product, the registrar will first register the domain. The remaining amount goes to you as profit.
    2. How do I give or provide them login details to their account?
If you are using WHCMS, it is done automatically with the software.
    3. How does Reseller Hosting work and is It better than web hosting affiliate program?
They are essentially the same thing. You will mark up the price of a product, then the remaining of it goes to you as product. With some companies you will have to provide support.
    4. WhIch hosting company will be best to work with ?
I highly recommend HostGator since they allow you to create unlimited cPanel accounts, however they have quite expensive plans.
    5. Thank you for youe time!
Your welcome. I would not recommend going into this businesss as you'll be competing with too many big players. It sounds great but in reality you won't make much from reselling.

Most hosting companies will offer you to have a free domain reseller account. It's worked like hosting reseller, too.
    - You have a Domain Reseller Account from Domain Registrar
    - Domain Registrar already listed the price for each domain extentions
    - You set the domain name price. For instance, Domain Registrar who provides you the Domain Reseller Account listed their for a .COM with $10/Year. Therefore, you could set the domain name for a .COM to your clients with any price including FREE or PAID.
    - Everything will be process automatically if you have the WHMCS (Web Host Manager Complete Solution). It's acted as Master Control Panel that you could Add, Delete, Edit, Manage your client hosting Packages Quota, Hosting Plans, Billing etc. Most hosting providers will be given to you this for free or paid.

If you have above mentioned, WHMCS, it will be handled all of this. You should learn more about WHMCS so that's all of your concern will be answered.

Reseller Hosting means that you will handle everything with your client such as Support (Some Companies be able to provide this for you) & Billing (You set your own price & receive the profit). This question will be a long answer one. Therefore, I'd suggest you to this:

You may start from reselling from a2hosting and obhosting companies.
Both companies have attractive reseller plans with support and their plans contain many useful resources.

I believe that if you want to go into reselling you not only need to be competitive on price, but you also need to offer a unique reason why customers should pick your company over a more established one.

Don't forget about supporting those customers. Sure, it's pretty easy to get 500 customers when you're selling pennies on the dollar services like some of these companies for "$0.98" per month. Keeping those customers happy isn't as easy as it sounds & when it gets screwed up, it makes more headaches for us companies who take our business serious.

Generally, the cheaper the service, the more those customers expect. Don't compete on price, it'll get you nowhere. Take a look at the hosting "companies" for sale over on web hosting talk - most of which are merely kids who think this industry is a get rich overnight business & then fail when they get in over their heads..can't afford second months server bills, don't know a lick about security, configuring servers, troubleshooting etc.

Regarding pricing & cheap junk - Example: Take a look at the hosting offers section & some of the older WSO's with "dollar" hosting - where are they now? Pages upon pages of complaints, host has disappeared etc etc. It's not a sustainable business model. If you're thinking of "trying" it, I'd advise against that as well - you're playing around with customer data.

Reseller Hosting is a really good business, but I would be concerned about security, backup and such issues.

Support is also something to be expected from you.

I used to resell hosting ( I got in that business by mistake ). I used to flip websites, and one thing led to other, somehow I ended providing the service.

If you are considering re seller hosting, I would spend some more time understand what is to be expected from you as a hosting provider. You can't relay on the hosting company service 100%, it doesn't really work that way.
