How Accurate Are Your Open Rates?

Recently I was testing with a new list of about 50 subscribers.
And I found out that with GetResponse, I'm know quite a few of them opened up my email, and infront of me as well, yet the tracking system still places them in the group of "unopen" section...

Anyone faced any similar issues? or did I miss anything?

Gmail has image load turned off by default. Since aweber and other companies use pixel loads for tracking opens, this throws a wrench in the works, no?

Most email programs/systems block images as their default setting, so open rates (which are tracked by means of an image hidden in the message) are always severely underreported.

If such metrics are important to you, it may be better to use tagged links in your emails so you can get a measure of how many of your readers click on them.

I don't need to track whether if they've clicked on my links or not, but more importantly, I need to know if they've opened my email or not.

Any other way to track open rates with self-tracking systems?

Ed, any tracking system relies on feedback from the destination. Doesn't matter if it's a pixel image or anything else. No feedback, no report.

As Martin suggested, I'm much more concerned with actual actions by subscribers - links clicked, unsubscribes, etc. - than with actual opens. Partly because I'm one of those people who turn off images on purpose, I suppose. If something catches my eye, I can always add the images.

Any open rate stat you get is going to give you a minimum number you can work with.

Given privacy concerns, I don't see this changing any time soon...
