    Well that can be a risk for sure, it really depends on the age of the domain and the backlinks pointing to it. Have you dug deep into the domain with Open Site Explorer? I buy expired domains all the time, usually the PR holds, maybe slips 1 position but usually 1 update is nothing compared to the years they've been around.

    Here are a few things to focus on so you know you're getting a good expired domain

    1.Domain age and authority
    2.Link Profile (if your domain has a spammy link profile there are services that can clean that up for you)
