If it has to be free go to MailChimp and stay within their free parameters. If you mail in excess of those numbers at most hosting companies, you will have your account closed. Furthermore the mail will usually not get delivered.

...Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just set there.

I use aweber myself and VERY happy with them. If are going to invest some money in this IM business of yours sign up with a paid autoresponder. You MUST protect your leads.

I wouldn`t recommend mailchimp. Read their TOS and you will see why.

    Thanks for the input.

But i don't want to use mailchimp or other autoresponders. I want to setup my own self hosted autoresponder.

I use self-hosted and have done for years. I started out with Interspire but just recently moved to ArpReach and am loving it.

If you buy it from them they even offer a service where they'll set it up on your server for you. A VPS is fine and that's what I use.

If you need any more info you can PM

self hosted autoresponders can be hit and miss because most hosting companies have limits on how many emails you can send, and the deliverability is very low.

You will need a couple of things

      #1. Domain name
      #2. Hosting
#3. Frond end platform (Interspire, ArpReach, ...)
#4. SMTP service (SendGrid, Amazon, ...)

#4 is the most complicated one. Depends on the kind of mail you are sending, but the risk of getting shut down is high.

Now, to answer your question ...

Most of the front end platforms have an easy way to add a SMTP account.
So once you are decided on what front end to use, install it on your server, configure it to connect to the SMTP account and you should be ready to go.

If you need any help putting all the pieces together, drop me a line.

Geewiz.. Use Linux. Get ubuntu desktop edition, install it. install vmware on ubuntu. then get ubuntu server edition, install it on vmware. now you have your own server to do what ever you want to do. For email i have a secret weapon for 100% inbox placement. pm me if you would like to know. its not much but works.

p.s. listwire is a free autoresponder.

You can purchase low-cost WordPress plugins that function exactly like an autoresponder. You'll just need to setup additional measures like DomainKeys, SPF records and other things to ensure inbox deliverability.
