Building an Email List for Services?

So I have a question, we all know how important it is to build an email list of leads and the different strategies you can use to pull in leads if you have a "product", but what if you want to offer a service? For instance, I want to start offering my freelance services to a specific market mainly 3d graphics using product rendering but I cannot think of anything I can offer to pull in leads.

The most important thing to potential buyers are finding someone that they can trust, is dependable, and has a proven track record of finishing projects on time and on budget. My original thought was to offer a discount say like %75 off first project if they decide to use myself and my team then go on to offer other promotions to move them to my back-end services, but I spoke with a friend who's already in the business and told me I shouldn't go for that since potential customers would think that you're desperate for work, and/or maybe there must be something wrong with your services.

Plus I discovered price is not an issue with my potential customers, but quality and trust to get the job done is what is the utmost importance to them. I found that when it comes to offering services the marketing is going to be a little different compared to when you're offering a product because products are very tangible compared to services. So, after my long explanation with what I'm dealing with, any suggestions? Any ideas on what I can offer to build an email list? Any help would be nice, thanks.

Chris

Offer a discount for your service could be 10%

Yeah I thought about that but this is kind of looked down upon since potential buyers would think that there may be something wrong with your services or you're desperate for work, plus money is not an issue with this market. Their biggest want is someone that they could trust to get the job done, someone that they can communicate and have a relationship with, and someone that can produce quality work. Their biggest fear is someone going over budget, not getting the project in on time, and someone that doesn't communicate on progress.

He is right, a discount would be the best choice.

Create a portfolio of graphics and have a sales page with different options. The best way to get people to buy something graphic related is to wow them.

You would sell someone like me by just creating a professional website and showing your portfolio. If I was impressed and that was something I was interested in, then I would definitely buy.

As far as for your members, I would offer discounts that are limited to your email list subscribers. This will be a selling point to get more leads, and it will keep people on your list. You could even try to use coupon codes and things like that. Therefore, your services are ONLY discounted because you appreciate them as subscribers. This wouldn't show lack of quality to me in my opinion at all.

I have been offering my programming services since 2008 and have a lot of success with establishing an online resource site so that people can pick up a few tips on my related subject.

They also sign up for the free 5 day course and then I send out the occasional email.

I don't market to them as heavily as I would in the IM niche because it's a different crowd and wouldn't work too well.

I can either promote my services directly or more often than not, they actually come to me as I'm already a trusted and knowledgeable figure in their eyes.

All basic stuff and there's plenty of information on WF if you need any more help. No need to offer any discounts etc. unless it's some kind of one-off promotion.

    Good luck

    Steve

I really appreciate all the responses from you guys. I guess what it really comes down to is testing and seeing what results I would get but I just wanted to check in here before I try anything and see if anyone has had experience with this type of situation. Any other suggestions?
