some guy is copying my content

Whatsup guys,

What can be done if you find a site that has copied your content? It's pretty obvious and has really gotten me fired up. He even took my images and removed my logos so that they look like 'his'.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Firstly try to email them through a contact page or through social media. I know it seems unlikely but you never know they might just mistakenly think anything on the internet can be copied. Start with a polite email asking they take it down.

If not, you need to take things further. Let them know you'll be taking further action. You can find out info about them through their domain WHOIS and other places, and send them a notice to take it down. You can try to contact their host if you can find it out and they may take it down for you.

Unfortunately it's a reality on the Internet. However, google will probably rank your page over his because his content looks unoriginal. It's just part of the internet though..

I agree with Ruth, get in touch with the offending person somehow (social media, e-mail, phone call) and point out to them that they have stolen your content and you would like them to remove it.

I've had this done to me before - where I was asked to remove a logo from my site as it was trademarked (but nothing was anywhere on the web to say so).

I quickly complied...probably because he gave me a deadline to comply by or he'd be sending the case to his solicitor.

Sometimes 'scare tactics' like that are justified and effective. Just be prepared to go through with the threatened action

Not necessarily, Google is so much unpredictable in some cases. I know some situation where Google has ranked the stolen content over the original one.

The best thing to do is to contact him but it also depends on his location, if he is in some specific countries, then I am afraid to say he wouldn't care a lot..

    Sure!
Just search for his contact details (email, skype or something) a phone number would be great ofcourse.
Then just email/call/chat him/her that you have copyright on your text and images.
You could say that it's illegal and that you're going to report him/her.
If you say that (it works 7 of 10 times), they are gonna remove the content for sure.
You could say also that they can receive a fine if they don't remove you content.
These are my tips for you!

I would email them and ask them to take it off. To be honest, I don't think that they are going to reply back to you and probably ignore you because they probably could care less.

If that does not work, I would email their hosting company and let them know.

I have had a few people copy my stuff all the time. I had times where I made YouTube video and they copied that and had their own link there. I had articles copied and they used their own link at the bottom and they mentioned that they wrote the article ( I really hated that).

If you really want to waste your time with them and running after them, then that would take a lot of time away from your business.

You just have to understand that this will happen a lot of the time and can burn you out so it is really your choice if you want to waste the majority of your time on them or on your business to grow your profits.

If you created the images yourself, you can REALLY screw this guy over for removing your logo, aka "copyright management information". Just because he removed your logo (and nothing else considered), you can sue him for a lot of money. Not to mention if he's profiting from your photos. If they're stock photos, I'm not sure. You have a few options before suing him obviously, but you should know that you really could nab him for a lot of money if you had to.

I recommend this post written by an attorney, and some ways down there is a header called "What happens when a copyrighted photo is used without permission?"

    Thanks guys.

I'll start by emailing him. Any idea on how to get his email if it's blocked on whois? Looks like it's because of some privacy settings: sap-sd-certification.com WHOIS domain registration information from Network Solutions

Also, I've written a blog letting people know about the copied content.

What are your thoughts on this? He's my main competitor and he has also just purchased my material and asked for a refund immediately (I don't think he had any intention of paying for it, he just wanted to take a look at the content and use it for his own).

    Thanks,

I'd fire off a DMCA complaint to his web host.

Some guy comes along and intentionally steals your content and rips out your logo, and you're going to send a "polite" email asking him to stop?

Like someone robbing a bank and for the bank to later send an email politely asking for its money back? I didn't realize this worked.

An email does not have to be rude, but it also does not need to be polite. Be stern, with a fixed deadline for compliance.

I once set up a website selling angrybirds stuff. About two months later I got an email from an address something similar to legal@zurichlawyers.com.

They asked me to remove some images I had on my site, or face legal action.

I didn't even bother looking into it any further, I removed the images and replied to tell them the changes had been made.

I have always thought about registering a domain like: Legal@examplelawyers.com and using that email address to warn of thieves.

Any way, the point of my story is, a lot of people get scared when you threaten them with something, or simply didn't understand that they could steal your stuff.

It might be an automated scraper stealing your content. The owner of the website might be "unaware" of it. They just set the keywords and the scraper grabs the RSS feeds. Turn off all your feeds if you can. That will stop about half of the robot thieves.

The fact that the thief took the trouble to remove logos from images tells me they probably aren't some innocent working under false assumptions. From my view, it looks like intentional theft.

I agree with the honorable Mr. Kindsvater. Serve the DMCA notice with naked CC: to both the host and the domain registrar. Give them a deadline.

Attempt to send him an email telling him to remove the content. If you can't find an email address or he doesn't respond, send a DMCA to his host. There are free DMCA templates around (Google it) and you can find out his host at ▷▷ Who-hosts.com : Easily find out who hosts a web site
