DIgital Access Pass (DAP) Integration with Forums other than vBulletin?

Has anyone succeeded in getting DAP integrated with any other forums?

I really want to add a forum to my site, but I'm no longer a fan of vBulletin (although I used it a lot up to v3) - and VB v5 seems to be getting even worse feedback. Saldy the DAP integration with VB seems pretty comprehensive. I'm kind of holding out hope that the DAP authors will support another forum, but otherwise I need to see what I can do myself.

Really I'l like to have another forum working with Xenforo in the same way - or even a "less good" way if it lets me use Xenforo. I'm especially looking for Xenforo integration, but IPB would also be ok I guess.

Has anyone done this?

Are there any other membership scripts that integrate with Xenforo?

I basically need something that can add/remove users access to subforums when they buy products/subscriptions and then remove them when subscriptions lapse.

Thanks

I use DAP on all my websites but never used it on a forum.

However, i suggest contacting DAP support. (I always contact then when i have any queries)

    Cheers,

    Hi Mike,

I've successfully integrated DAP with SimplePress for a client. It's a pretty decent forum plugin for Wordpress (although I prefer MyBB - which is NOT for WP).

Anyhow, the benefit of DAP + SimplePress is that once a user is registered for DAP, you can set it so that DAP syncs him/her to Wordpress automatically. And since SimplePress is a Wordpress plugin, new users are automatically registered as members! :-)

I've sent a suggestion to DAP on their blog. New version coming in ~6 weeks apparently so you never know!

Interesting about SimplePress - don't really know anything about that. How does the access control work for a SimplePress installation? Do you just manually set the pages that a user has access to (subforums) - but what about the posts within those subforums? Are they protected? Otherwise I worry you'd have to manually add new posts to the DAP product for each subforum, which wouldn't be workable.

I'll definitely investigate SimplePress more. Xenforo looks so slick and seems so fast I've kind of got it in my head that its the best choice for forum software - but ultimately this decision is about the quality of the final product - the marriage of forum and membership software.

    Thanks

Good points, Mike. A robust forum/membership solution would be sweet. I feel like membership software as a whole has a long way to go but ...we're getting there!

I seem to recall that SimplePress had security features but I don't remember whether they go down to the post level. And you're right, protecting posts one by one would be a pain...

I use simple press on my site at Make Your Membership Site, Online Community Or Subscription Service More Profitable In Less Time. - MembershipExpert.com and it can protect individual forums. It can't protect down to a particular thread or post, unless it is INSIDE the protected forum. You can have a forum that is open and another one that is for members only. The plugin has come a long way since it's early days (when it was clunky and counter-intuitive).

Another option to look at is Vanilla Forums and they integrate with Wordpress as well. Not just the forums, but full comment integration. Then you don't get two separate user profiles. It's all one community profile for the user. They have a downloadable version that you install and a hosted version which costs monthly.

You can also try BBpress which is an Automattic plugin from Wordpress. It's not as fancy as Simple Press or Vanilla Forums but is totally free and can scale to millions of users. Wordpress uses it on their own forums.

DAP should work with any of these as they are all Wordpress integrated already.

When you start using another solution like Xenforo, then you have to deal with bridges and maintaining two user bases and synching. It's a technical nightmare and one false update can destroy your entire business and bork your site.

Hope that helps. I cover these more in-depth on my website but my advice is to start with a wordpress based plugin, then once your site grows consider a bridge solution.

why would you use dap instead of vbulletins normal subscription feature?

Thanks Rob for that info. Maybe SimplePress is what I should try.

Charles: The main reason is that I want to be able to offer premium forum access as an upsell to purchasers of my existing products. So give them a $1 or free trial for 14 days if they buy one of my other products and then rebill them monthly after that.

I can also use sub-forums for community support. So each forum can have a support forum that is only visible to product owners.

Without membership site integration, all of this becomes more difficult I think.

    Thanks

It would be absolutely fantastic if DAP integrated with xenforo as it does with vbulletin.

vb is a dead software going nowhere. I use it reluctantly. But if anyone has ever frequented a xenforo community they'll be aware at just how much more pleasant it is to use.

Plus, by ignoring xenforo, DAP are creating a whole in their product which forces those determined to use xenforo to go to Amember, so it makes good business sense to embrace the up and coming forum solution.

I see folks here asking about DAP/Xenforo integration. So just wanted to update this thread that the Xenforo integration is now available - well, almost.

Someone has been kind enough to create a Xenforo plugin for DAP and this is currently being validated. Check out the following links for details:

    Ravi,

    This news is excellent!!

I'm not sure if I'd have the technical know-how to use a plugin with DAP. I'm not sure how that would work, but if you put up a good tutorial like you have for other documentation, I'm sure I'll be able to follow it.

    Thanks for letting me know.

    Hi Melanie,

Using a DAP plugin is as simple as uploading a file to a certain DAP directory, and then adding a configuration line to your DAP product.

See if the developer's readme file helps:
