Are Your Customers Being Told Your Site Has A Virus? (Bitdefender)

Did you know that you could be losing out on potential sales because your website visitors may be seeing a warning message advising them not to visit it?

A fellow warrior recently notified me that our main site was being blocked by a service called Bitdefender, and that a notice was displayed advising visitors that our site was "bad".

I've heard similar mentions previously from people who said that our site had a "virus". But when running scans, and asking others to visit our site, each and every time we did not find any threat.

Since this issue has most likely affected potential revenues as potential customers head for the hills, I decided to send Bitdefender a letter.

They then analyzed our site(s), and responded with the following.

"Dear Arnold,

Thank you for your patience.

The analysis of the files/website has been completed with the following results:

Detection was removed.

We are truly sorry for all the inconvenience.

Have a nice day.

Best regards,.... "

But wait!!

Then how did their service come to the initial conclusion via their "analysis" causing them to chase away our customers?

And how does the same service give us a clean bill of health assuming they use the same analysis?

It almost sounds as if they are working together with medical health care professionals.

Either way, It just goes to show that you could be losing out on leads / sales, if you are not aware of a potential problem that could be causing your websites to chase away potential customers, as opposed to attracting them.

I doubt it has anything to do with "medical health care professionals". It likely has more to do with Bitdefender making money from recommending (or selling outright) virus scans, disk cleaners, etc.

You caught them at it, so they took their hex off of your site.

I've seen that warning on sites that have nothing to do with health topics.

It is true, though. When I see the warning, I bail out first and ask questions later.

Thanks for your feedback John. Never thought of the fact that they recommend or sell virus scans etc. Hmmm. Either way, my attempt at a joke failed.
I meant that when you go to a doctor they say you might have a disease, but running another test shows there is nothing wrong. Thus the healthcare professional reference.

A political site I love to visit has many HATERS. One of their tactics is to tell AV companies that the url of the site installs malware. Result: traffic crash + free speech suppression
