Is it safe to hand out your email address?

I hate spam! First I need to say, I hate spam! And that's the reason why I post this thread.

I've seen many times that in order get something you need in the internet, for whatever it is, e-book, guides, walkthrough, tips, etc. They just need your email address before handling them.

For many times I avoid this situation and avoid posting my email address, to subscribe whatever so called, guides. I have not subscribe many programs, but then I received mass of spam all days long. Which makes me wonder, if my email were to store spams? Guess they are selling my email address to other list buyer.

So, what could you do to avoid this situation?
It's annoying. Zz.....

I use gmail and many people have my email over a period of 10+ years. I have found that the spam is manageable.

I use gmail. For added protection, you can use free email protectors like scr.im This prevents your email from being 'harvested' by bots

    Hi Mr Lim!

I don't know if there's ever going to be a fix to "email spam". Ultimately, handing over your e-mail is handing over a piece of trust. The best advice is that it's in your best interest as well to know who you're handing it over to!

Gmail does do an amazing job dealing with spam, but I will say alot of times it takes some VERY IMPORTANT emails and shoves them in spam as well.

Hmm...usually I will create a disposal email that is meant for these 'optin-to-get-something' thingy.

So my personal email will be free from SPAM.

The disposal email is also for market inspection....

    Easy peasy man.

Just use 0-mail.com it is a public e-mail provider that doesn't get filtered by most (except Aweber...) e-mail marketing providers.

just type in "aaa" where it says "Adresse E-mail : " then click on ouvrir and wait for your freebie.

(Sign up to the list with aaa@0-mail.com).

I use it all the time, especially to snatch some juicy freebie from the gurus.

Never give your primary e-mail out, as other warriors said, use a junk/throw-away e-mail. I have a few back up e-mails. Yahoo is best for spammers, I wouldn't even waste a great gmail account on signing up for freebies. However, for member sites, I would advise you to use a real email, for password reset & help purposes.

I don't even read my spam folder so it's all irrelevant to me. But I agree with others here that suggested to use an alternate email address.

You know email addresses are free, right?

If you were set on not getting spam in your main email inbox, just make a new email address and subscribe to everything there. Just use it to opt-in to lists and then only check it when you need to do so.

Most people here will never be handing your email addresses over to others, but I have run into rare cases where I'm getting email from people who's list I never opted into, and I can only surmise that they were sold an old list by someone here.

    Hi Mr Lim,
Just get another gmail address and use that for the stuff that you wish to sign up to. Use what you want and trash the rest. Really there are more things things to stress about!

Easy: you can always make another email address to use with products and people you know nothing about

    Hi Mr Lim,

Usually I just create a dummy email in order to send the junk mail to. In general gmail is pretty good at this.

Also, getting a free product is usually just the enticement to a bigger sale at the end of the day. So if all you want is the free ebook or video, creating a dummy email seems like the best option.

Getting something free from a well known marketer, makes it worth to be in his list. Don`t just use the dummy email for every freebie you get. You could use some really cheap, really working products.

Oh, I 100% agree, however I don't believe that getting the emails personally is going to make me any more inclined to buy, rather doing the research and looking at the product which would usually be displayed after the squeeze page.

But you definitely have a point as it may serve as a reminder about the product being offered. So I guess, two sides to every coin.
