Monetizing Memes Online

I was wondering if any warriors were successfully monetizing memes in any way and if so, how? (If you don't mind sharing of course!)

Or perhaps any ideas on how one would go about monetizing creative and original memes?

In case you don't know what memes are, I made one just to show you:

Obviously this meme isn't very monetize-able ...

But which types do you think would be?

Thought it'd be an interesting topic of discussion if anything!

Best,
Shane

I think they're more of a banklinking, and traffic driving device.

These drive traffic to your offers.

The difficulty is creating one that goes viral enough to make it work. That to me is the big challenge, otherwise it's just like any other picture.

yeah great meme design is a skill in and of itself. It has to be humorous, timely and sharable. Also take into account the target age group. Are they big spenders or looking to get lulz on the net and waste time?

And most memes have no branding on it so you could put a lot of work into something and get no credit for it. There's just such a low return on investment on it.

I guess it can work if you have a following and you post it to your fan page or whatever. Don Wilson is pretty awesome at it.

Memes can be HUGE money. Just study the CanIhazCheezburger meme or the lolcats. The company that got into that meme actually received lots of Investment Capital money.

Thanks everyone. So, having a meme that goes 'viral' in way is obviously the best case scenario, but then you'd have to have some sort of branding on there, even if it's just a domain name in small font at the bottom...

Has anybody else gone "outside of the box" and made money with memes in any other creative ways? Perhaps selling meme-creation as a service to offline businesses or something to that effect?

Very cool idea indeed. I've also seen people make "meme-generator" websites and apps, that is probably a way to monetize them as well...

      Thanks for your input!
