Write Blog posts or Ebook

Hi there,
I already have a blog ( started 6 months ago) and have a few articles there. I am also offering a free ebook to get some opt-ins to get some subscribers.

Now, I am looking at making money from my blog. And the best advice I got is write an ebook.

I have a few ideas to write( my niche is fat loss)

I could write blog posts and give all the information in my posts for free
OR
I could write a ebook which I try to sell.

Which one is better. The blog will help me lauch my ebook and recognize me as an authority. But I want to make money by selling my ebook too.

whats your advice.
Another question, why do ppl buy ebooks when so much is available on internet for free.

Turn your blog posts into an ebook, and sell it. People pay for the convenience of having someone else put all of the information together in one piece.

I concur, you might feel like you're leading people on but most eBooks are made up of publicly available content, just someone has gone through the effort to put it in one place and sell it.

And you can get that published for Kindle as well, or make a free report, give it away for free and build your list.

This is a good idea...the great thing here is if you are getting enough traffic you have different options in what you can do to make money...Best of Luck

That is the golden thing here, do you get enough traffic.
If my blog was getting less than 500 visits a month I would give the content out for free to increase my reader base.

Then when you have a good traffic flow then I would think about releasing a ebook and Test Test Test!

        All the best

This is the perfect idea. When you sell the compiled works, don't call it the "best of the blog" or anything. Mark Cuban's book was a compilation of his blog, but on the title he didn't point a finger at it. He just did it.

Most of your customers will come from long-tail keywords and won't bother looking through every post you've ever done before buying the book, they'll just buy it.

it depends - if you want to put your eye on sales you better write an ebook. if you want to capture leads you better give it away.
having that said i´d say write two ;-)
    1. give an incentive for subscribing, generate leads - means - drive lots of traffic to your site.
    2. sell another ebook you create to your list - MUCH easier than selling to people just coming around

  • Why limit yourself to an eBook? If your visitors are showing signs of receiving value from your blog posts, you should then turn the content of your blog posts not only into an eBook, but into other formats as well such as Audios, Videos, Power points, Spread Sheets etc. Your same blog content can also be expanded into a full fledged multimedia course containing all of the above and selling for $197, $497 or up, depending on your audience. You can also set up a membership area, and offer more in dept information that expands on your posts. Alexa above touched on "perceived Value". The key that sets those apart who sell $2.00 eBooks from those who sell $2,000 courses, is that they took the same content and chose to create and market one over the other.

    Both

Use some of the material as a great lead in to your current blog customers - E.g. turn a chapter into a theme, and then promise them that theme for free if they sign up. Or even make blog posts out of a couple of topics that are covered.

You then have the rest of the ebook which you can then sell to those who have signed up.

Why have luxury car sales been INCREASING through the economic downturn?

There are a couple of reasons why people buy "when so much is available" for free.

    Because
    1. It is often hard to compile all of the information into one source
    2. The authority of the person/company selling the information will convince others to believe (rightly or wrongly) that their information is more valuable than the free information floating around on the net
    3. Because price indicates (rightly or wrongly) higher quality. If someone is offering something for a price, then it MUST be of higher quality than the free stuff....right?

Thanks everyone for your quick replies. The idea I had was
    - I am already offering a free ebook ( 60 tips to burn fat...)

I am going to upgrade it to ... 100 tips to burn fat... and try to sell it through my site.

I will also try to publish it on amazon ( No idea how I would do that!!)

I have a few more topics in my mind to write more ebooks on and try to sell it.

I never thought of compiling my blog posts into one big PDF file and trying to sell it. And provide updates to ebook, everytime I post something new. That sounds neat

Other idea I had was to create a mobile app about my 100 tips ebook and try to sell it. ( Give 60 tips as free mobile app!!)

These are some basic ideas. I am getting most of my traffic from google now (about 200-250 visitors per day) MY bounce rate is 80%....

Just dont have too much time to market my blog everywhere, as I also have a full time job.. But so far it has been a fun ride...

I think it might be an interesting idea to split-test! (Not very easy to do with book titles, really??). The reason I offer this observation is that, to me, "100 Tips to Burn Fat" sounds like a downgrade from "60 Tips to Burn Fat" rather than an upgrade: it perhaps suggests a quantitative approach rather than anything to do with quality. I'd expect "7 Tips to Burn Fat" to outsell either title. But I might be wrong, which is why testing (if possible) might be interesting.

I know a guy who sends out emails in the personal development niche with "X tips to do that or that", with X being a high number. 90% of those tips are worthless, to say the least. You're focusing on quantity, not quality. 60 tips are a lot, so that means they're either worthless, or you're giving away too much content right off the bat.

I don't know, I wouldn't buy a book of tips, especially in this niche, but that's me. People probably want a plan, a system to follow, not something to figure out for themselves. (Sounds to me that individual tips need some work of putting them together, even if they are good tips.)

Hold on, there. I think you've misunderstood what these folks were trying to tell you. When they said people buy for the convenience, they referred to the convenience of not having to scour the web and put together a series of articles found on tens or probably hundreds of websites, not when they are all in one place (i.e. your website). Imagine buying an eBook that is basically a collection of free and easily accessible articles found on one website, would you be happy? I wouldn't.

This whole quantitative approach seems to me to work against you. Why give away for free 60% of your content, and make the last 40% available only for purchase? It doesn't make much sense to me. Also, if, as I said, those 60 tips are not something to write home about, why would people pay to get another 40 of that type of tips? I mean, you can't say "well, the first 60 were so-so, but these 40 are stellar, buy them." Nobody is going to believe you.

100 tips to lose weight is just my idea of compiling some great unique tips. Still working on that. Its not easy to come up with One hundred unique tips and tricks. I will work on my ebook and try to market it. Its all part of my learning experience. lets see how the sales go, but the book is still in initial stages. I was thinking of adding tons of pics to make the book inspirational.

I have a few other ideas to write about. The thing is I can either write them in my blog posts or save them for my ebook which I would try to sell.

I have come a long way in past 6 months. Creating a website from scratch and posting content and getting some traffic... Now I want to see if I can sell something of my own

I don't want to offend you, but if your website is the one in your signature, we have different opinions on what "coming a long way" means.

Among other things that are so wrong on the website linked from your sig, is putting an adsense banner in the text incentivizing the opt-in (on the free ebook page).

          It says:

You will get 60 hottest tips on how to

          BIG, FAT BANNER

          Stay motivated
          Visualize your fat loss
          Write your goals
          Clean up your diet
          Exercise smarter
          Maintain your weight
With all the banners, spelling/style mistakes, IM plugins, you have no chance of being taken seriously. It looks just like your average IMer's site, and the average IMer doesn't make much money.

If you want to be taken seriously, take out adsense, take out the flashing arrow in the opt-in box, proofread your articles, "unplug" the sharing plugins, and generally make it look more professional, because right now I, if I landed on your website, I would be out in a less than 5 seconds just by taking a look at it.

Just expanding on what Alexa said...

The whole point is to exchange value for money. Writing an eBook with 100 tips to burn fat is short changing your customer. Think about it. No way in hell all those 100 tips are equal in effectiveness, so in essence you're filling a book with mostly junk content. The best approach is to take the 7 absolute best tips, expand on them and deliver the content in such a way that motivates the reader to take action.

Honestly, who's gonna buy a 100 tips book? I could sit down right now and write 100 tips to burn fat in 30 minutes. Easily done because there's no research that goes into creating the content, unless it's a 200 page book that expands on each and every tip.

As a matter of fact, it is. The other day I saw a book at my local library weight loss tips - 100 of them in 200 pages written by a physician M.D.

I have to agree more than ever now that I've started using IMGlobal for my blogging platform. In the process it gives me an option to help other business owners learn how to brand themselves on the internet simply by offering them lots of tools for free so they can see the value. It is working for me and I have only been using it for 6 days. I'm really feeling like I understand internet marketing and rankings and why blogging is so important if done correctly. It is teaching me all that.

It all started because I took the 30 Day Free marketing challenge. It was a no-brainer for me in order to grow my primary business.

depending on what way to monetize you chose, you can write a book and sell it to your visitors, write the book and give it for free so you can get a list of subscribers, or write posts and place ads, earning money from advertising companies. Experiment, by making 1,2 posts first, see how that works, if it doesn`t, start writing your book.

I guess make money from your blog is to monetise your blog by display ads. Could be adsense or affiliate ads. Then follow up your lists with affiliate products as well.

I would write the ebook and sell it using clickbank or other vendor which has a large affiliate network. That is the way to do it.

People buy eBooks because they think it offers them something they don't know or won't have to keep searching for.

Most people I know offline have no idea how to even do good web searches. The general public is also very impatient with finding what they want. The non-technical people I know pretty much just go to Facebook and their email.

So if you have some way to get some good information, and package it up in a nice easy way, then you are doing a service.

    Good points...

Add to that a desperate, and often irrational, need for a solution to their problems, although thinking about it I guess that's broadly covered by "Impulse".

As for the OP, products all the way.

Once you start creating products, you can then starting building a funnel and eventually offer coaching where the big money is. But I think you should still build a blog and populate it with content (as well as use it for lead capturing) so you have a place where people can connect with you... and find out more about you and what you represent.

I totally agree, except for desperation part. Personally, I buy a ton of e-books simply because I know that I can learn a valuable skill without having to wait for a physical book to be shipped to me.

Building a blog is great, but an e-book definitely bring some sort of authority with it. Even if it's a free e-book, it shows that you have some kind of skill that other people do not have. Honestly, anyone could go to blogspot.com and build a blog or go to WordPress.com, etc., but not everybody makes an e-book. For that matter, not everyone makes a physical book, so the harder the thing is the more authority you were inherently going to receive.

Anyway, I would do both. Create a blog so that you can capture e-mail addresses. Also, create an e-book that provides a perceived value to those who visit your blog.

You definitely want to head in the direction of writing an ebook. You have a good start with your blog, continue to build that out with content, start to look for guest blog opportunities and make sure you are bookmarking and building social communities around your topic/content. That can be as simple as notifying social networks of your content but should also involve a deliberate campaign to get involved in discussions around your topic.

All of this should result in you getting some half-decent traffic, make special note of where they are going (which blog posts are getting the most attention, which ones are getting comments?)

The idea is to use your blog to naturally identify topics that have more interest and desire around them. We do this all the time for markets like weight loss or personal development where the exact niche demand is uncertain.

Once you have identified a specific sub-niche, you can either get to writing your ebook right away or create categories on your blog and begin a series of blog posts around that specific sub-niche which you can later turn into an ebook.

Finally, I would start RIGHT NOW...creating a lead funnel from your blog. Package a 5-step system into a report or video series that you give away as an incentive to subscribe to your list. Start building a list so when you launch your ebook you have some early review candidates, a nice platform of early customers/champions that you can augment with an affiliate program/partner promotion.
