Longtail Keywords length and traffic volume

Hi,

I have 2 quick questions -

1. How many words do you consider a longtail keyword to be?

2. What sort of traffic volume do you target with that keyword.

What combination does anyone think is best in for SEO.

Thanks

I would say generally 3 words upwards would be regarded as longtail. As for volume, it varies. Remember that results can be skewed, but even if I had a phrase that brought me in an extra 10 - 15 visitors per month i'd rather have that than 10 - 15 visitors less.

Find your phrases and get them out there.

As Andy said, 3 words or more can be regarded as long tail keywords.

Regarding traffic volume, it might range from 0 to 10,000 or even more. But finding long tail keywords with 5 digit searches per month and low competition is very hard. If you have found one, it is gold. You just have to dig deep to find the Gold.

You might want to define "low competition." It's much harder to find short tail keywords with low competition. I don't have much of a problem finding keyphrases with 10k+ searches per month and 750,000 competing websites or less. I generally get excited if a search returns less than 400k competing sites.

Some people say 5000 or less sites for the keyword in quotes is good or loew competitive. Few people go by the pageranks of the pages in the first page of Google. I think Josh Spaulding wrote a blog post that explained about finding competition using Google PR. So it differs from person to person.

Long tail keywords are a simple tool that allows an SEO 'expert' to show you how to get to number one on Google or whatever other search engine you want.

Using - red and yellow spotted paint - as an example, it is only Nº1 if you search for it using quotation marks because the individual words can produce masses of search results.

Red and yellow spotted paint in quotation marks returns 5 results but without them returns 259,000. Now, who do you know who habitually searches using qutation marks?

Incidentally, neither search style is likely to find anybody looking to buy.

I feel i should also add, dont focus simply on long tails... you may be surprised what you can find in your respective niche. As a general rule for me, I look for keywords that have a keyword tool result of 1000+ searches a month, and less that 10000 results in a google search in brackets. But thats just me.

What difference do the brackets make?

      Thanks

3 above will be considered long tail keywords. For traffic, you can look for keywords that are constant being search. I used Google adwords showing the trends/graph of how many people search for that keyword.
