Here's How I Make Money As Rookie Affiliate. Please Help Me Make More!

Hi, all

I've had a website for almost a year now (Dream Body Six Pack -) on which I sell fitness e-products as an affiliate. I've had a few sales (1 or 2 a month on average), especially in the new year, but now things have returned to normal levels so I would like some suggestions on what should be my next step to increase hits and sales. Here's what I've done so far:

1. I originally started the site in roughly June of 2012 using Wordpress and wrote articles on fitness. I also sent these to sites such as ezinearticles. I originally offered just 3 affiliate-marketed products.
2. Although ezinearticles sites brought me traffic they brought few (if any) sales so I stopped doing this after a few months and now my articles are exclusive to my site.
3. I used to offer a free ebook and newsletter in exchange for email, which did get some signups, but with no sales it didn't give a good time/reward ratio so I stopped doing it.
4. My first sale was in December 2011.
5. I originally added an article to my site every few days, then tried adding one every other day for six months, which did little to increase traffic or sales, so I have returned to an article every few days. I now have over 50 articles so content isn't an issue, I do it more to show that the site is still active.
6. I have tried youtube videos linking to my site and Twitter, as well as posting on fitness forums, none of which brought any traffic, but I do have a page on Facebook which is brings some and takes very little of my time.
7. As of last week I have more products (around 10) and the site more than pays for itself, but sales are sporadic and not increasing.

So far what's worked best for me is: start a site using wordpress and add one quality article a week, pay someone to create a logo and banner (forgot to mention that). I offered just 3 products for sale which I increased to around 10 last week.

The current goal I have for my site is to do £250 (around $375) a week, which is 5-8 sales depending on the product bought. I have spare time to do more to the site but aren't sure how best to utilise it so I would be very grateful for suggestions on what I can do to increase traffic, and more importantly, sales.

Thanks in advance.

David.

Get known on some fitness forums, don't mention or link to your website until you are well established. Make sure you understand the rules, and see what others are doing there, anybody else promoting their stuff? Have they been there a while and get the feel for how and what you can promote before you do.

Do more article marketing and not just ezine.

Get more active on facebook and build a list of followers there.

You seem to be leaving out twitter which is not dead Warren Buffett tweeted twice (first time ever) a week ago and got almost 400k followers and 40k retweets in a week. Lets face it you're no Warren Buffett, so you shouldn't ignore twitter.

I should have mentioned that the reason I stopped posting on forums was that it seems everyone knows best about fitness, so whatever advice I gave, especially if it wasn't mainstream, became buried by replies telling me I didn't know what I was talking about. I do. But like a lot of forums some people don't like being wrong and I stopped because the whole thing was very negative.

Article marketing seemed to actually lower my SEO ranking. Twitter I agree I should use, but I tried and got nothing from it so aren't sure how to proceed with it.

      Thanks for the reply.

Try going closer to the flow and agreeing when you can. Throw out a little bait now and then and catch a few fish without dynamiting the pond.

Sounds like every single fitness forum I have ever been on

(and there's been tons of 'em)

I actually stopped selling my own products (for now) and just promote affiliate offers in building muscle / weight loss niches, for reasons similar to yours.

But have you thought about creating a Facebook page for yourself? Facebook is such an easy way to get your name out there.

Posting fitness relevant pictures and quotes on FB spread like wildfire now-a-days.

Try to rank for some free, SEO targeted traffic. That should work pretty well too.

Build high quality backlinks so you can rank better for organic SEO.

Keep updating your blog at least once a week to keep it fresh like your already doing.

What about classified ads like backpage, usfreeads, gumtree. Craigslist, etc..

And I hope your building an email list that alone will skyrocket your income.

    Hey David...

You have done good things but I can definitely understand your frustration.

    A few questions:

    - is your content written with SEO in mind? (do you target specific keyword phrases)
    - were your articles written with SEO in mind?

I would suggest trying to start up a mailing list again. It is an ASSET. Although it doesn't work with every niche, it should for yours. Get those names, establish a genuine relationship with your lists, and you WILL get sales.

dumbell shrugs?? Cut the crap and learn people how to squat and deadlift in a proper way

First off...Take a look at Medhis Sl 5x5... StrongLifts: Gain Muscle And Strength While Losing Fat StrongLifts
He has a huge mailing list and a paid membershipsite... He working full time with this website...

    I got to be honest..

This website of yours look like every fitness site do... If you look at SL 5x5 page you can see that he has his own niche within the niche... A lot of people disagree with his approach to fitness and muscle building(curlmonkeys lol),but still..haters gonna hate and all that..As a result..He has a huge amount of traffic and a BIG email list..

I think you have to go your own way...Create something different...that works.
When you have something different you can start making yourself to an authorityperson at the fitness forums....

If you look at the authoritypersons at the fitnessforums...Are they fronting dumbellshrugs... or deadlift/squats/bench/oh-press as the way to a muscular body?

I can understand you have put a lot of work to this website. I`m not saying your articles are crap but if you want to make more money I think you have to do things a little different...think outside the box.. What about a bonus when they buy through your affiliatelink? a free report or something

Sidenote:The most genius thing about SL 5x5 is...his program is a total rip off of mark riptoes starting strenght...

Build a youtube channel similar to six pack shortcuts. It will take time to get a following, but as long as you provide value and work consistently. You'll make tons of money..

PM the link once done, i'll subscribe

StrongLifts 5X5 is legit, it turned me into a monster! Such an efficient method for 'getting real big brah'

Anywho.. Everyones mentioned SEO, backlinking, social media.. yadda yadda yadda..

Im gonna say: Write Better Content

Don't just churn em out, really bring something new to the table. Which is damn hard in the fitness niche.

My favourite fitness gurus are Martin Rooney (Training for Warriors), Elliot Hulse and sometimes Dan John / Ross Emanet.

That's the standard, meet it - and you'll reap the rewards

There's a lot of poor advice so far about how to get traffic. People saying you need to focus on SEO...that's exactly what you DON'T need to do. Too time consuming, unpredictable and you can spend ages on it and get no results especially if you don't know what you're doing.

    Onto your site....

It looks really bad. It's basic and cheap looking. Doesn't look like an authority site at all. More like it's been thrown together in 5 minutes. Get a better theme, pay for a premium one.

I'm no bodybuilding expert but your content seems pretty average to me. The thread titles are unimaginative 'how to do X', 'how to do Y' and samey. Nothing unique, original or new there. I'm confident I can find that sort of thing on dozens of websites. You need to create EPIC content that's not available elsewhere, something that you spend hours crafting and working on that people want to read, that get them excited and wanting to share it. Work on creating better content and go to copyblogger and look at how to write headlines that people click and read.

Don't blog every day or even multiple times a week if you have no traffic. You're wasting your content because no one is seeing it. Spend most of your time promoting your content rather than writing new stuff, Darek Halpern wrote about this on Social Triggers...using the 80/20 rule. Just 20% of time writing content and 80% promoting. Whenever you write a new article spend the next few hours promoting it on social media, via blog comments, put the post title in forum sigs and post for a couple hours, social media, syndicate that content, turn it into a video and distibute to YT & Vimeo etc, use Google Alerts (or Buzz Bundle to make it easier) to find mentions of your keywords on blogs, forums and Q&A sites and respond to them with information and links.

Build your list. It's a big mistake not to be building a list. You need to retain your visitors so you can keep in touch with them, market to them over and over again and drive traffic back to your site. The more content they've consumed from you, the more they get to know you and the more times they've been exposed to your product the more likely they are to buy. A lot of people don't buy first time round but they'll grow to trust you over time and consider it...but only if you ever see them again and chances are you won't if you're not building a list.

Selling affiliate products works much better through email marketing than just listing on your site too.

I think what you have done is good and you should probably continue to work on your strategy and techniques; meaning, improve upon them.

One thing I notice is people talk a lot about SEO. I used to do SEO in the beginning, before all the algorithmic changes, and did very well. The problem with SEO is that it changes often and to depend on SEO for traffic is not a good business strategy. You want something that will work for you long term and you don't want to be dependent upon just one method.

I do suggest that you build a list. Create a squeeze page and a report, video, etc and get leads. The reason is that most people will not buy the first time or even the second time. It may take them a while before they buy. But in the meantime you can build a relationship with them by sharing value, your knowledge.

Also, vary your content. It is hard to write something epic. I really don't see how one can do this unless you are good at writing. I mean a workout is a workout. How many ways can you explain doing various exercises that stands out from any other article about exercises.

The important thing is to build your own following and you can do this with your list, on youtube, twitter, and even Google Plus.

Do a workshop and create a webinar. There is a plugin that you can get that will allow you to create automated webinars. Do a webinar or workshop once a week. Address people's issues and problems in your niche. What kinds of problems are they having? You can find this out on forums and respond to them with a video or a webinar.

The thing is that having a blog and trying to get it to more traffic to it, etc takes time. You really have to be everywhere and that takes time; especially if you are just one person. There is only so much that you can do in a day.

Do the best you can. Work on improving your marketing strategies, and definitely start building your list.

The cornerstone of getting web traffic is by producing epic content. No one wants to read average or samey content that's available elsewhere.

Content doesn't necessarily have to be blog posts or articles it can be videos, images, infographics, podcasts, audo files, webinars or any other number of things.

You need to differentiate yourself from everyone else who's just churning out standard blog posts on topics that have been done to death or no ones going to pay any attention.

You need a USP. You need epic content. You need to get your epic content in front of the right people.

      Thanks for all the replies.

It's hard to take everyone's advice when some of it conflicts. For example I've asked on this site before for feedback on my site design and 99% was positive. Same with the content. Some say concentrate on keywords, others say it's a waste of time. Some professional affiliate marketers (can't remember names) have told me to not bother with a list.

Having said that I do take on board all the feedback I get.

I have changed the homepage a few times before. Currently it shows a timeline of my posts, which at the moment is a lot of "how to do" stuff. The reason for this is I posted a full workout a few weeks ago and am now going through the process of explaining each exercise. Agree this might not look very exciting to new visitors so thinking how to change this (again).

Also the reason I haven't come up with my own "amazing new workout to get exactly what you want (whatever that is) in 5 minutes" workout / product is that I don't have one, and if I did it would be a bit odd to then offer other people's products. Affiliate marketing is what I'm trying to do, the articles are there to demonstrate my subject knowledge and therefore give my recommended products some legitimacy.

I must be doing something right to get sales and make a profit, I just need to figure out what the 20% is and stop the 80% that isn't.

Again, thanks again for the feedback!

Yeah you'll always get conflicting advice. It's confusing because people will say totally opposite things with equal conviction and evidence. It's tough. Just experiment and good luck.

Your website is very nice but I don't see no Capture Form anywhere. No matter what you do in your business most importantly you need to be building a subscriber base from day 1.

What you can do is add a Capture Form above your follow me for Latest Posts area on your blog, Your email subscriber form should be the first thing a viewer sees when they come to your website.

Also it would also probably be beneficial to get a custom made pop-up so that when a visitor lands on your site your Pop-up will activate and you can offer them a free high quality report or video about getting six pack abs...

Entice the people on why they should buy your products, Give them a High Quality PDF or Video on 5 foods to eat for skin tight obliques... Be Creative with your campaigns and remember people buy off people they trust and like not some person they have never heard of, So get to building your list starting today...

    I hope this helps,

  • I think, while I didn't read the specifics of your copy, I think the content you seem to have seems solid if you're into that kind of thing. But I agree that you could improve the aesthetics of the site maybe. I've been trying to monetize my affiliate site from Coolice and I'm failing... :/ Anyways good luck and I'd recommend working on making your site have more authority.

I think you should put some affiliate banners in the right side navigation. You are expecting people to click on the products link, and that is a lot to ask for. Banners will pop out to the people on the site, and they will be more likely to click them. I also think you should make recommendations at the end of your posts telling them to check out your highest recommended products. It would also be a good idea to cloak the affiliate links. You have the normal ClickBank link that most people don't like clicking. Either cloak it with your domain or use a shortener like tinyurl.com. I definitely think you will improve your sales by following these few tips.
