Disadvantages of Free Website Templates?

I am setting up a website for a friend's business and I was wondering what are the disadvantages to using the free templates offered by hostgator other than the generic-ness quality. Does it affect your seo at all?

Thanks,

Eunice

Probably not. Do the templates have any shady links? If not you're ok with using them. However, using templates might impact your business brand in a negative way. If your friend's business is small it might not be that important either.

Most free website templates look lousy/bulky (to me), if I were you I would go with just using a wordpress blog - as far as effecting your SEO it shouldn't be a problem

There is usually nothing wrong with it. However the code might not be the best and that would affect your SEO. If you are unsure of those topics a template may not be the best to go with, or just do thorough enough research into the template you choose if the information is available.

I shy away from free template use just because I like the professional look of not having to provide a link at the bottom saying that the design is not unique. Although I do regularly design my sites, and if I don't design them myself I buy the rights to the template and alter the code and design myself. If you have rights you do not have to provide a credit link (usually).

Is there much difference in a paying for template monster template compared with free template from hostgator?

Seriously? Go with a wordpress blog. They usually load just fine, You can use it as a mini content management system, and no matter WHAT business you're in, you'll benefit from blogging.
