Questions about setting up a website

Hi there guys,

I've got some problems in setting up a website.

I know the advantages of having your own domain, but Wordpress' super established plugins and the easiness of its use is great for newbies like me.

So, can we have a domain which will redirect to a Wordpress blog? Of course it'd be great if it showed the domain, not the Wordpress address, on the address bar.

And how good is GoDaddy's blog hosting service?

thanks in advance

  • If you don't want to have your own domain name, then I would use Blogger, and not the hosted WP service. Apples to apples, blogger blogs will just be ranked quicker and they are almost as good as having a domain name since Google owns Blogger. This is also a good route to take, in case you find this website/blog stuff just isn't for you.

However the best option would be a WP or Joomla blog with your own domain name and host. Use GoDaddy for registering your domain name - BUT NOTHING ELSE. For hosting try Bluehost or Hostgator. They are cheap and rather easy to get started and both have cpanel access.

If you go with the first option and find you like it, then keep that Blogger blog, and build an "official" website and the two can then complement each other.

    • Don't use free hosting. Here is why... when you use free hosting you are always at the mercy of the service provider's TOS on content. Perfect example is WordPress. I learned first hand that when WordPress says no commerical blogs they mean it.

I had done some SEO and a number of other things for a blog, put some affiliate links on it and bam they shut it down without even telling me about it. I had to hear about it from one of my website visitors kind enough to let me know.

So don't ever use free hosting services especially WordPress.

Just get hosting from a good provider like HostGator, HostMonster, BlueHost, etc. and notice that I did not mention GoDaddy.

GoDaddy is not who you want to use for hosting on shared hosting accounts, because they don't have cPanel. cPanel will make your life a million times easier. They also try to nickel and dime you to death with all these add on services. With a provider like HostGator, you get everything you need all in one place, all in one price.

Expect to pay $7 or so for hosting per month no matter what anyone says. Remember that you always get what you pay for.

Don't use free hosting sites for the benefit of SEO, you can always do your own SEO and get ranked in Google.

Also if you have your own hosted WordPress blog you can do a lot more with it. There are no restrictions on what you can do with the code. If you are on a free hosting service WordPress or otherwise you will have limitation on the type of code you can have in your blog.

Hope that helps. Oh and if you need a domain use Namecheap.

    • I prefer Host Gator and their fantastico script for blogging to install and operate. Takes seconds to set up;

  • Yes, buy your domain with Go Daddy or whoever you would like but use a different host such as Hostgator.

You will want to install the Wordpress platform at your new domain. Hostgator and most hosts will make this easy with a One Click Install. Then the Wordpress software is already at your domain and it will be more powerful than a wordpress.com blog. You won't have to worry about anything because it will be your own website that you own. And you will still have the ease of use of wordpress with the plugins etc.

    • Have to agree with the others, especially Dennis. If you are already used to using Wordpress then get your own hosting (I would go with Hostgator or Blue Host), buy a domain somewhere else, namecheap are good and use "Fantastico" which is the one-click install mentioned in this thread and away you go, your own Wordpress Blog to do what you want with, well pretty much LOL

  • You can buy a domain and have the domain name forwarded to your Wordpress blog. So when people go to yourblog.com it will be forwarded to yourblog.wordpress.com

You just have to log into the backend of your domain account and have it forwarded.

    • And if you insist on using the free WordPress hosting they offer an option for you to mask your WordPress domain with the domain name of your choice... but if you do that you might as well get your own hosting anyway.
  • Actually you can install a wordpress blog easily using cpanel of your hosting account if you have like hostgator then you can install plugins there. So it's better to promote your own site and not wordpress or blogger's site.

  • Setting up wordpress on your own domain/hosting is really not that hard at all. Look up a few guides on the search engines and you will find some pretty straight forward instructions. Will take you 10-20 mins to do. If you want some extra help PM me and i will advise.
  • Once you get it set up, it's just like what you have now.
