Some Questions Regarding Planning Paid Traffic, Split-Testing and Conversions

Hi,

I'm very new to paid traffic and conversions, but as I know - if I'm not mistaken - without enough conversions, the paid traffic will have low conversions and I'll get a negative ROI which is not scalable

But without enough traffic, I can't even test how much the conversions are and I can't make any money at all.

But I'm confused in how to plan the campaigns, I'm on $600 per month budget (the basic domain and hosting costs excluded):

What should I budget most on? Traffic? Conversions? 50/50? or what?

Or how can I calculate how much should I spend on each?

The conversion also depends on the traffic too, I mean where the traffic comes from, if it's targeted or not.

Which traffic source is best* to test conversion rates of Squeeze Pages if you're on budget?

*One that's not as expensive as Google AdWords, but not as cheap (and untargeted junk) as "get 5000 visitors for $5" offers.

I'll set-up my first campaigns, but I'm not sure which of the following is best way to start investing in conversion:

A: Paying an expensive copywriter for one squeeze page, and then use it in the next 12 months.

The problem with that is that I think if it doesn't convert well, then I have just lost a lot of money.

B:Paying a cheap copywriter (e.g. $100 per copy) to write multiple squeeze pages, split-test them and keep the one that converts best.

The problem with that is that I'm not sure if the $100 copywriters copy is worth the price at, or could I write my own copy with similar quality.

Or any other suggestions?

Copywriters at $100 are generally not worth it. If they were good they'd be charging much more.

You'd probably be better creating your own squeeze pages for now. Think of your products main benefits and use them as bullet points on the squeeze page. Create 4 different squeeze pages in different styles then split test them (you can use a free Wordpress plugin called MaxA/B) and see which comes out best. Then take the best one and start split testing that, making small changes each time.

Before you spend tons of money on traffic you need to make sure your site converts.

    @RockingLastsForever:

So you mean; either pay $1000+, or pay nothing to a copywriter (?)

You don't need a copywriter.. You can use other peoples squeeze/sales pages for ideas and just test and tweak.. But I would not go with "adwords" though..

I don't want you to go out and spend $1,000 on a copywriter if you don't have it but generally you get what you pay for with them...though there are some cowboys out there charging thousands of dollars even though they couldn't write a sales page that converts if their life depended on it so you need to do due diligence.

For your squeeze page I think you can do it yourself. Just stick with using the products main benefits to persuade people to opt in and use MaxAB to split test 4 different pages to see which one works then build on that.

I agree MaxA/B is good as well as prettylink (free version)

I think buying solo ads would be your best bet for traffic if you are looking to test out your squeeze page conversions. You don't need a copywriter for a squeeze page. A copywriter may be needed for a sales page. In general, a good squeeze page will list the benefits of what you are giving away for free, and it is simple and short. It all comes down to split testing to figure out which squeeze page gets a higher opt in rate.
