What are good keywords for a City Business Directory?

I am working with someone and starting a back linking campaign. I have helped him with
on site seo and now the site is listed in Google at (city) business #2 and (city) businesses #2. There are a few other keywords with page 2 listings.

I will be starting some backlinking and thought I would ask what would be appropriate keywords for a city business directory. Edit: Examples the city keywords, or type of businesses or services that he might list. Just need some ideas.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Absolutely! The type of business should have many KW variations.
ex. florist, flowers, flower delivery, flowers delivered in, flowery delivery for, etc.

He should be able to rank very well for longer tail KWs.

Google your main keyword and find the #1 listing. open their source code (view- source) and see what KWs they're using.

    Hope this helps.

Use the Google Keyword tool and see what search terms people are searching for for that industry in your city.

You'll find many terms as Icombs has listed and more.

Wow, those are some great responses.

I'll echo. I like to open the google KW tool and enter the city name, sort by monthly search volume, put on the phrase match, and then just go down the list to see what is appropriate.

In regard to the google business directory, when there is competition, I've found it best to fill out everything as thoroughly as possible to the point of making a coupon.

Good luck with the project, Jon

Thanks for the suggestions so far.

LCombs - yes, exactly what someone else did to his site - looked at his source code. Their site looks terrible but it appears they copied out my keywords and now rank above or below him for some of the same keywords. Works well.

Seems like we are all on the same page here. My thinking was that I would rather have backlink keywords that people are looking for such as city florist, city property management, than city business.

Yes,Google keyword tool is a favorite of mine for this kind of thing.

    Thanks for your feedback.
