Thinking About Leaving IM - Found Something Better

I was fascinated by marketing ever since I came across the Gary Halbert letter many years ago. IM is cool, and it has a hell of a lot of potential.

I've always been into self development, and my plan from the beginning was to do what's necessary to set up a passive income stream, then to leave IM, and venture out into the world and develop myself as a person through travel, entertainment, interaction with random individuals, and challenges I set for myself.

So the mistake I'm making with IM is I just want to get it out of the way.

I think I've come across a better offer than IM. My brother got this random job with a direct marketing company. These guys train people to sell stuff on the street. After you get good at selling, you start training others to sell, and you keep a portion of their commissions. So you end up with a team of people who are earning money for you.

What's really cool is they have mentors who are already earning hundreds of thousands, teaching you every step of the way.

The reason I think this is better for me than IM, is it'll help me to develop people-skills. I'll be interacting with people every day face-to-face, and learning how to persuade and entertain.

I'll also be developing a REAL skill, so if I ever want to come BACK to IM, I'll have something that I'm a REAL expert in that I can teach other people online.

With IM I've always just wanted to get it out of the way so I can be free to develop myself. With this job, I'll be developing myself on the job.

Meh, still thinking about it. I won't leave IM completely, I still want to learn how to create a huge following of people who are eager to listen to what I have to say, and eager to buy anything I recommend - just like Frank Kern. I just don't think it'll work when I'm desperate for money, have no mentors to guide me, and have the mentality of just wanting to get it out of the way.

-----

Anyway, just thought I'd share this with you folk. Maybe others here have had similar thoughts about IM, maybe IM isn't right for you if you see it as something you just want to get out of the way so you can be free while living on a passive income.

Well, for me i will not advise you to quit IM completely as there is no job that can pay you daily as IM. You can be doing your direct marketing and be doing IM part time. Better still, you can bring in the direct marketing to IM and fuss the two together. Gudluck anyway.

You are wise to do what you feel you have to do. You have to find your niche in life just as you do in IM. Only time will tell if it's right for you.

As you say you will develop skills that you can then use for an online business.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained as they say.

    Best of luck.

I wish the best of luck to you but ill give you my 2 cents.

It sounds like your heading into a MLM program . I did those , a few of them. Most of them are crap depending on what your trying to sell. You have to take into consideration that MLM has a bad name. You start telling someone about a new thing your doing and they immediately say "not interested".

You mentioned being a self development kind of person. I admire that , but why work so hard to get people to sign up and buy a product and only receive a commission? I would prefer to sit my ass down and study IM and educate myself to a point where i can do that kind of business on my own. For example, you can offer training to people wanting to get in IM , make videos , make a proper course and receive 100% of the profit . You can also give opportunities for your students to receive commissions if they refer your course to others and sign up so you all benefit. That's just an example but there's unlimited things you can do with marketing and make a lifestyle you always dreamed of.

Most important thing is to educate yourself over time to more or less understand everything there is to know in marketing. You need a mentor? the money you'll give signing up for that job , use it to sign up to a course on WSO maybe . You'll have support and a proper training course. Only after you educate yourself further , you will know what you can do , how to do it and the most effective way to do it .

You have all the help you need in this forum! ask any questions you want and you'll get prompt replies and helpful information.

Don't get me wrong , MLM can be good and there can be a lot of money to make! but i only see it working if the product is extremely interesting and if you have enough close friends and connections to promote it. I did't have connections and once i mentioned MLM to anybody , they didn't even want to hear what it was about
Give it a go , see how it turns out for you . Even if it doesn't work out, you can still continue IM or anything else you want.

Whatever you choose to do , i wish you luck and always have fun with what you do .

As far as jobs go (and this is a job because you're forced to get out of bed at a set time everyday), selling to cold leads on the street wouldn't be my ideal occupation by a long stretch.

You will be presumably working in the city, long hours, on cold, wet days, you will drive in and out during rush hour and pay an arm and a leg to park your car. Generating sales will be ball busting, after all, who likes being approached in the street? When you do make a sale, some of your commission will be going to your mentor.

If you're comfortable selling face-to-face, why not approach businesses with your own products or service. You can sell something of value that you're proud of. With your skills as an Internet Marketer you can outsource all of the work and scale your business up.

The fact you've got the balls to pitch to people you don't know puts you in a position that is advantageous in comparison to most Internet entrepreneurs. Most of us just want to sit at home and sell via e-mail. Take advantage of that and build a real business, the MLM chain can't go on forever.

MLM and IM have their own benefits and downsides but with MLM, the people who want to earn are more like becoming customers instead. But it doesn't happen to everyone so I hope it goes better with you. Although you can really interact with people with no barriers which is a lot better but the downside is you have limited access to reaching people. With IM, you can address a very large crowd. Whatever you learn in MLM, you should go back to IM and incorporate what you've learned from both.

Wow, all this talk of MLM, I'd never heard of it until now. Just looked it up on Wikipedia.

My brother's already earning a good living from it. Despite all the negative reputation associated with MLM, the skills my brother has already developed in just 6 weeks: his people-interaction skills, his ability to persuade, explain things, to inspire and lead... are just awesome!

From what he tells me, his mentors seem to have an excellent grasp of persuasion and communication skills in general. They are able to inspire people to action. They talk of how the job changed them. So I really don't care if it's tough in the beginning, I really don't care if the whole system collapses in the end, leaving me with nothing, I really don't care if people look at it as a legitimized pyramid scheme... at the end of the day, I'm investing in myself, my ability to sell, persuade, inspire, and move people into action.

The benefits for me are the skills I will learn - being able to communicate with someone face to face and persuade them to take some form of action.

IMsam: Yeh, I can reach a bigger crowd with IM and the potential is far greater. I'll definitely consider coming back. Hey, I have a low-level passive income from a few products already, so I'll be maintaining these in the meanwhile.

      sanhal: Thanks :p

Jenna619: Marketing is awesome, I'll always be doing some form of marketing.

mrkkels (Aris): - an awesome reply, thanks

You mentioned being a self development kind of person. I admire that , but why work so hard to get people to sign up and buy a product and only receive a commission?
It's not about the commission, it's about learning the skill required to GET the commission, and then teaching it to others.

You can also give opportunities for your students to receive commissions if they refer your course to others and sign up so you all benefit.
I've considered creating an MLM-style structure within IM, where I teach affiliates to promote my products. I understand it can all be done online, and the potential here is far greater. But I really need a mentor, someone who can show me the ropes so it doesn't take me 10-15 years to reach an income level people in this MLM company are reaching within 1 year, 2 at the most.

The reason people progress so quickly in this MLM company is because they have a solid mentorship structure set up.

Most important thing is to educate yourself over time to more or less understand everything there is to know in marketing. You need a mentor? the money you'll give signing up for that job , use it to sign up to a course on WSO maybe .
Trouble with finding a good mentor in IM is there are too many people masquerading as good IMers. People get into this biz and start promoting themselves as expert IMers form the get-go, they start out by teaching people how to make money with IM, when they haven't made a single penny themselves.

The guys who we know ARE making the big bucks, would charge way too much for a student. I'm a HUGE fan of Eben Pagan for example, this guy really knows his stuff. I'd love to have this guy mentor me, but shit, if he's bringing in 20 million a year, what in the world do I have to offer him in return for the time he takes out to teach me? I certainly don't have the money.

You have all the help you need in this forum! ask any questions you want and you'll get prompt replies and helpful information.
Too many newbies pretending they know more than they do. I've been mislead far too many times. Though I have a list of people's who's posts I do follow.

Whatever you choose to do , i wish you luck and always have fun with what you do .
      You're awesome, thanks.

      4DayWeekend:

You gotta get out of your comfort zone to develop yourself. Ball-busting is just what I need.

When you do make a sale, some of your commission will be going to your mentor.
And then, when I become a mentor, I'll be collecting a portion of the commissions from my students. That's what makes this more than just a job, because leverage is involved.

The fact you've got the balls to pitch to people you don't know puts you in a position that is advantageous in comparison to most Internet entrepreneurs. Most of us just want to sit at home and sell via e-mail. Take advantage of that and build a real business, the MLM chain can't go on forever.
Through this MLM company, I'll be LEARNING how to pitch to people face to face. It'll put me in a better place for when I DO set up my own business.

      Cobaki:

Whatever you learn in MLM, you should go back to IM and incorporate what you've learned from both.
Excellent advice. I realize I can reach more people in IM. I really just want to learn this skill of selling, persuading, marketing. Then I can come back to IM, or start my own physical business, or both.

hey buddy thats a wise choice to make but isnt that like working as a store sales manager kind of thing where you have all trained you just manage the staff and make money lol, but if that is what you want to do, its totally your choice, but you can stay part time in I.M if you have a responsive list, have products that you have to sell, jving with others, IM is fun but its like a job at first for sure, but it gets alot easier from my mentor that is what i have learnt just little tip, (get into coaching and mentoring im 20 and a hopefully going to get in that got few joint venture deals but im also open to other deals if you would be interested I have alot of technical skills that you may need, I know you say about people skills etc, this is where coaching and mentoring comes in, im going to create a coaching prgram for self help like people skills and making revenue online which will be cool, as my mentor said you need a mindset for success before you even think about business, so you make be making thousands etc, but with out coaching this is where its at but valuable planned and systimized coaching is KEY to online success, but think to your self would you like to go out in the freezing cold depending on country u r in im n uk etc, and do this kind of job or make jv partnership grow a real business? its not a hard choice you may be older than me, but I would just like to give tips on what my mentor is teaching me and im implementing it and hope for you to stay on im and stay on track you network with me for sure, about self help and I was struggling with that interms of people skills should say, so I hope you stay on board and we can network and be friends and time to come do good things together.

to your success(please pick the right option)

^^This existence will only happen for maybe 1 out of 1 million people in 'IM' if we're being realistic.

The chances of developing a 'passive income stream' that will allow you to wander Earth interacting with 'random people' is unlikely.

The idea about you doing 'challenges' is interesting, though. You don't have to wait to start doing those. You can begin now!

Sounds like you know what you want and I think your passion jumps through the screen. You would probably make more doing that then IM because of that passion. You could always take your money and leverage it through IM outsourcing if you want. You can even take that money and buy advertising if you need to so that you can expand your own brand of products.

I am not sure what you will be selling, but, it seems to me that this could be the start of an evolution for you.

    Hi Snow Predator,

When you are feel that passionate about doing MLM I say go for it. I've done quite a few myself and there are some valuable skills that you can learn from doing it. If you are looking to do it for what you have said, you will obtain those skills. I've read through your posts here and you have already decided to keep those IM income streams going. So in that case I say go for it. I'm sure you have heard enough of what people think of MLM. I have my own 2 cents worth too. But honestly, you don't need it. Go for it. You may be apart of the small percentage of people who actually make it to the top in MLM. As long as there is a strong product that actually does what it says it will do, go for it.

You must think with your heart, and only you know what you really want to do. That being said, I agree with Jenna as IM can be a passive income stream - AND if you are feeling crappy and cannot face the real world and interact with flesh and blood people, you can always create wso's.

    Take care and choose wisely.

Good luck, but I think there always (atleast) two types of people. Ones that want to go out, interact with other people, travel, wear suits etc. And then there is another type of ppl, who want to wake up at 1PM, scratch balls, play video games and watch how sales show up on a PC screen.

MLM gets passionate responses here every time lol. My opinion is that it can be a vehicle for creating wealth. Then again, I've seen some pretty large promises in MLM and if you look at income disclaimers, hardly anybody is living up to the hype.

I kind of like the post above about taking those persuasion tactics and closing business owners on some services or something. I think you'll do a lot better there and it would be more profitable short and long term. Good luck to you though, whatever you decide.

I did this sort of thing for a while - great to develop your negotiating, communication and selling skills, for sure. If you're good at it, it can be great, but was too much like a job for my liking!

The way that can work is if you're running a team of people who are on the streets, and you're just motivating and mentoring, this can be close to a passive income, which is pretty cool. The trouble is, if you get someone leaving, you get sucked back in to the business until that position is filled...

MLMs are ridiculous... You're selling sub optimal products for a premium price and tricking people into parting with their money... If someone were to swindle you, you'd be pissed, the only difference with a MLM is that your already too far in to feel taken, as you've already become part of the system... Have fun selling Quixtar.

I most emphatically agree that owning your own business is not for everyone! But the "grass is greener" you've recently recognized might be a mirage. The things you itemized are - or can be - some of the best incentives and testimonials for getting into IM. It certainly was for me.

If you want to emulate Frank Kern, and have that huge following of fans eager for your next promotion... Well that's going to take time, and a lot of directed effort at upgrading your mindset, knowledge, skills, and habits - but it all boils down to putting your target audience first (or I prefer to put it "stop chasing money").

I wish you good luck on your new venture, however there is one thing I would like to note.

Essentially what you will be doing is the same as IM but just face to face with your potential buyers. So if you really prefer that route then good.

However if you do the same thing with IM, you are reaching a much wider audience doing the same thing as you would face to face.

Since you are selling to more people, in most cases, this will turn out to be more profitable.

Your decision to leave IM isn't a bad one given that you can continually grow and develop your skills and experience. If you find yourself to be successful in your new venture, you will always have the option to return to IM as teaching others to sell can be a very lucrative niche. One example that comes to my mind is Eben Pagan, he was successful in the offline world but now is also involved in internet marketing to pitch some of his products.

Good luck with your new venture!

It's never a waste of time learning new skills in any field, whether IM, direct marketing or a job. Also a good idea to change direction if you lose your enthusiasm with what you do now.

Not everyone feels comfortable selling face-to-face so if it appeals to you and you get skilled at it you'll have a distinct advantage over all those who don't do it, don't want to or have tried and given up. You'd also be in an ideal position to market online services to offline clients.

    Hey Snow Predator,

I actually worked for a company exactly like this when I graduated college. These 'companies' sweep up recent grads, because it is so appealing. Yes, you can get some good training, to a degree. But like anything, 99% won't make the $700,000 a year like the big boys in these companies do.

Everyone is mentioning this is MLM. It's not. Trust me. I've personally been in this program. And MLM is better IMO. I use to be against MLM, but now i can see it's benefits. I won't debate others here on this issue, i'll just give you my 2 cents since i've personally worked for a company like this one.

They are selling you on a different dream. It can be fun. They pump you up in the morning to go out and sell during the day. Everyone has a great attitude, etc. But you work a TON of hours! If you're lucky, after a year or two you might be building your own team (if you're good at selling, and most aren't).

I personally, actually did really well. Within a few months they started letting me hire people and put people underneath me.

    But I quit.

Why? Because I felt like I wasn't really being honest with people. People, will come in to 'interview' for what they think is a real job. When the truth is, they will take anyone they can put underneath them to sell products.

Now you can work there and get some experience, but I don't think that is going to be the 'way' to your future dreams.

I think you should continue learning, and find a mentor who is doing what you want to be doing.

my 2 cents. If you have any more questions let me know.

Dude if this is your dream, don't you ever quit.. If you think you can escape your frustrations in IM by going into another industry, then you will have to face the same in the industry. People come to IM to be able to build a business that will help set them free, both time and money.

Just as long as you know what you're getting yourself into.

I interviewed for something similar a while back - and it wasn't for me. What they offered:

It will be a door to door sales job.

    It will be 100% commission.

    There will be no benefits.

The workers "seemed happy" - but they were not like an educated group. Not trying to sound high and mighty or anything - but they were simpletons and it almost seemed cult like. (this may have just been the location I interviewed with)

Just so you know what you're entering...if you're cool with it, good luck!

lol... it's just Multi-level Marketing. Much like the model of affiliate marketing, except that it's in real life instead of on the Internet (and probably with more tiers)

It is all about the experience really, I need something that'll get me interacting with people face to face.

IM is great, I see the potential - just made over $200 yesterday while spending the whole day at a friend's wedding. Ever since Google Panda, $200 days, heck even $100 days are rare for me, but I know how to get there, it'll just take time. Trouble though is IM is making me a total social recluse. I need to get out there, meet people, make friends, deal with people face to face.

Yeh, from what my bro tells me, most folk in this biz are uneducated, and ironically, it's the uneducated lot that make most of the money, lol.

Regarding cults, I'd LOVE to learn how to start a cult. Cults utilize some of the most powerful persuasion tactics known to man. Can you imagine having a cult-like following in IM? All the people who do are FILTHY rich!

  • MLM can be very rewarding if you have the kind of mind-set it takes to do it well.

Otherwise you might find yourself in a bit of a pickle as time pushes on.

Your choice, however, and I sincerely wish you the best fortune in your new vocation.

This is just nonsense: in many of the very long-established MLM companies, some of them now many decades old, the highest earners are people who have joined the company within the last few years. The idea that the only people who make a lot of money are the "first in" is a complete myth based on ignorance and prejudice.

In one sense, everyone starts off in the same position, with no downline and no income - the reality is that it's the people who join later who tend to get the added advantages that the inevitable "teething troubles" may have been attended to, the company may be more stable and likely to survive for the long term, and it may have better training systems/methods in place.

Here is the real gem in this...

the skills my brother has already developed in just 6 weeks: his people-interaction skills, his ability to persuade, explain things, to inspire and lead... are just awesome!

If you get a good sale trainer (it sounds like your brother has found one), then learning to sell is one of the more valuable skill you will ever acquire. Having good sales skills is something you will use the rest of your life.

Even if you tire of working with these people, and quit after only a few months, you will have received knowledge and sales experience you won't get any other way. There is no better training than getting out there face to face, to see how people react to your sales message.

If you stay with it long enough, you will learn to handle rejection. People are not rejecting you, they just don't happen to want the product you are selling that day.

Pretend that Brussels sprouts are your least favorite food. In fact you detest Brussels, but you love chocolate cookies.

I "cold call" you trying to peddle a bushel of Brussels sprouts. When you tell me, "No," you are not rejecting me, you are rejecting the Brussels sprouts. If I, as a salesperson, had taken time to find out that you loved chocolate chip cookies, and cold-called you about buying a bag of my mouth wateringly delicious cookies, you probably would have made that purchase. It's a product you want.

Some 37 years ago, I "joined" an MLM group, and lasted about a year and a half. MLM just wasn't for me, because I didn't enjoy having the MLM company telling me what I had to sell, and how I had to sell it.

But, some of the sales skills I learned there, are ones I sill use today.

So go work with your brother and his trainer for a few months to see what you can learn from the experience.

    :-Don

Where the heck did he say MultiLevelMarketing? Not all direct sales are based on MLM!!!

Selling insurance policies for instance is not classed as MLM - I'm amazed at the level of some PPL's intelligence here

The OP specified that (with the repeated references to "this MLM company") in post #13 above, if not before.

That's evidently because you've chosen to reply without reading the thread properly - but don't worry too much: we're used to people who make judgmental comments about others' intelligence doing that.

I think this sounds like it's something you would really like to do. I say go for it, because you'll be excited about learning all you can and then being able to move forward from there.
I think also it's wise that you said you'll not give up IM completely but maybe just not have it as your main focus. Since you said it's just something you're wanting to "get out of the way".

A word of advice and caution...
But first I think you should do what makes you happy. If you need a change go for it. Follow your heart.
As for direct marketing though make sure the t's are cross and i's dotted... I once worked for a company that sold mobile phones in this manner when I was in college. I sold 50 plans at around 50 commission each in the first week or two. So great, I was expecting an awesome paycheck (for a college kid)... they paid me for 15, claiming that some of the contracts were missing initials on a couple of lines. So make sure you do your research and have everything in order

Since you've been studying IM why wouldn't you use your internet skills to attract prospects to your direct marketing offer so you don't waste time talking to people who aren't interested or don't have the means to buy your product. Do both. The best marketers us the web to fill their schedule with deals. They automate their prospecting and lead generation.

This story reminds me of a guy I knew that was leaving his sales job for a different company. He was going to a company where he was going to sell boxes (cardboard boxes). He said "When you think about it, every company needs boxes so it's a really easy thing to sell".

Some people are good at SELLING and some people are good at getting things SOLD to them. I'll let you figure out which one you are.

What other people said this is MLM, I would recommend not to jump into it. Long hours, cold sales, and have to approch people who are not really in the mood to buy an item. Thats why IM is so much better because you can get someone to buy on their own time with no effort to you. Best of luck

There is no right or wrong business systems. I feel that you should choose the option that you love so that it will not be a chore to you. I do have friends who are making good money from real legitimate mlm systems.

The internet is merely just a platform that people use to conduct their business. You can even combine your mlm with IM so that you can both offline and online exposure.

    Good luck

    Snow Predator,

Good luck in your new endeavors. I don't know what organization you're joining, but if you're going to learn some direct selling skills, it will definitely build character!

Now, I had to comment on this:

IM is great, I see the potential - just made over $200 yesterday while spending the whole day at a friend's wedding. Ever since Google Panda, $200 days, heck even $100 days are rare for me, but I know how to get there, it'll just take time. Trouble though is IM is making me a total social recluse. I need to get out there, meet people, make friends, deal with people face to face.
Sorry, but I'm going to disagree with your premise. IM is not making you a total social recluse. Marketing online only makes you a recluse if you choose to be. There's nobody there standing over you forcing you to sit at your computer or mobile device.

Look, I've done my 12-16 hour days. I've put in those long hours. But after awhile, I realize I needed more balance in my life. I believe it's VERY important to make sure that you make time to have fun in this life.

Even when I was working those long hours back in the day, I made it a point to get out and socialize, meet new people, etc. Sheesh, I even joined Match.com and used Yahoo! Personals (when it was around, it's gone now) and had a ton of fun doing it.

It's rarely the business that is making us social recluses, it's our choices, our priorities, and how we manage our time.

My brother does direct marketing, and he loves his job because he enjoys engaging people directly to persuade/convince them. So it's like a challenge to him. For me IM is my challenge. My bro can't do what i do because he wants to be constantly outside engaging with people.

I'm not saying being an IM'er means you have to be social, it's just that what he does fits him far better than doing IM. It works for him, so it's all good. And IM works for me, so I'm good.

You'll gain skills either way. Just know that MLM is a lot of recruiting and your particular skill set will include a lot of verbal persuasaion. Just as there are refunds in IM you'll experience your down-line falling out on you at various points. So in terms of gaining $$ from those you recruit, you're going to need to be really really good at motivating consistently to get decent results from your team.

I think what a lot of people fail to realise here is that he needs to follow what he's passionate about, and what he can learn from the experience.

    1) He's not passionate about IM (I'm not either, in fact, I hate it...and IM = MMO IMO).

    2) He wants to learn new skills.

I say go and do direct sales! What you'll learn from that, you can always come back and apply it to online marketing. It'll make you better in the long run.
