Just a heads up incase anyone's using Social Media Widget V3 plugin to generate Social Media icons in the sidebar on Wordpress sites.

WordPress › Social Media Widget « WordPress Plugins

Better to upgrade it to V4 because V3 has sponsored links using a remote include in the source.

I found a paydayloan link in one of my sites, and I traced it back to this widget.

Nice javascript makes it hide but still live.

Apparently V4 doesn't have it.

I typed up a little here .. Malicious code and link injection in Social Media Widget Wordpress Plugin V3 - BEWARE ...read more | Freedom to Explore

My advice is : Upgrade it ... or ditch it.

Scan your homepage for outbound links with this tool -> Bad Neighborhood - Link Exchange Tool

Dodgy or what?

I read about something similar on another forum a while back. One of the big SEO blogs had looked into how really spammy affiliate sites could continually rank #1 in Google for terms like payday loan and when analysed most of their links were coming from footer links that had been hidden in themes and plugins.

Yes, many folks load up plug-ins and themes willy-nilly without ever seeing if they are secure.
Hence the persistent warnings on the WF by Alexa and others about doing searches for 'free WP themes' etc.
Spamming [insert rude word] are everywhere.
