Online marketing for a conventional book

I have a book coming out later this year, from a major publisher. Obviously, as the author I'm keen for it to do well and I wonder if others here have had successes promoting books online?

Yes, it is possible to create a lot of interest for your book with online campaigns.

If done correctly you can create a best seller and sometimes even land on the New York Times best seller list.

Online or offline: It's a PR game.
There is probably not one bestseller that gained best seller status
    just because of "merit".
