Hello Warriors, I'm a newbie in the IM arena. I've been lurking and learning for the last few months and am finally taking some action. I even started up a blog just to get my feet wet and get familiar with wordpress. Anyway, the one thing I'm struggling with is finding niches. I understand what the criteria is for choosing niches. I'm currently doing the 30 Day Challenge and have become very familiar with Market Samurai. However I'm having a hard time choosing keywords to start researching. I tend to gravitate to things I'm familiar with but when I find keywords that are good (decent number of daily searches with fairly low competition) the competition is very high authority and tough to outrank. I'm not looking for niche suggestions, just want to know where to look for ideas. Thanks in advance,

JR

    I always start on Amazon/ebay
Theres always loads of other places to look.
    But for me, it's a no-brainer.
Particularly Amazon, since its nicely layed-out in best-selling order.
Just type in your broad topic of interest, and you'll get a whole bunch of micro-niches to pick from... The great thing is that you can look at book stats and see how well a book ranks in its genre and overall...
If the book sells reasonably well, do you thinks theres a demand for a digital version?

    Pat,

    Great suggestion.

I chose a niche that is extremely low in competition (about 230,000 search results) with 12000 avg monthly search volume and have had relatively good results so far (I launched 03/01/2009).
I used a formula which I feel works well, find a keyword phrase and then compare search results (exact match). The results to search ratio should be no more than 28:1.

    Good Luck!
    Jon

I only choose things that I'm diehard about, knowing full well that if I'm not super interested in the niche, I'm going to abandon it after a month or so. I'm a firm believer that if there is too much competition for particular search terms then that just means that you're not digging deeply enough into your niche of choice, and that you can further refine it to a more specific group.

I think that's the problem. I'm not digging deep enough into the niche.

There are two niche finding tools that I envy, but can't afford to get when it comes to niche hunting: microniche finder and site build it. I was watching some of the promotional videos of microniche finder last night and I saw one video that shows how you can make a profitable google adsense web page. Also, although I can't afford to get Site Build it, I've noticed that they have tools to help you to find the perfect niche. Of course, if you are like me and don't have money, then you will probably want to use google to find key words you want to use.

All the tools out there are great.
But in my opinion, you can't beat an afternoon's worth of research with:
    google's external keyword tool
    Amazon
    Clickbank
    cbtopsites
    google

    All free
    tools...

Hey JR, congrats on your 1st blog! As you discover the various ways to search out niches, you may want to share them on your Newbie blog. I'd add some different categories as well, and make a few more posts. Are you using tags for SEO?

Thanks Terri, that's what my intentions are with the blog. I haven't optimized anything yet. This blog is my "playground" for experimenting and learning. I'm sure the looks and function will change over the next few weeks as I become more proficient. I apreciate your suggestions.

I agree with many of the suggestions above, but for me, i always head on over to Ezine Articles.

They have about 50 main niches and if your click on one of the niche buttons on their home page, this opens up a further 20 to 30 sub-niches within each niche.

So by going to EZA, you not only have over a 1000 niches to choose from and look through, you also have millions and millions of articles from which you can start your research and gain further ideas.

      Cheers

I agree with Partha. Ezines are the best place to find a certain niche that you feel you can work with. You can get a good amount of research from the ezine also.

          All the best.

Finding niches is something we all have to go through. However, if you want to cut to the chase and get into action right now, send me $20 via PayPal and I'll get you started.

Just kidding! Why not hire someone to find some niches for you? I'm sure if you went to the classified section and put in a want ad for what you need, you can save time and invest your time in other things.

At some point you'll be doing your own, but for now, it will get you started.
