Suggestions please for the best Writing Sites to earn much needed income

Hi Warriors:

Hope all is well today.

Can I get some tips please on the best writing sites (articles or other printed works) as a way to earn income?

Without notice my full-time position ended due to large layoffs and as somebody that has professional writing and marketing experience I am hoping I could earn some money on a site or two but have concerns.

Are there specific sites you can recommend that pay timely, are honest and not collecting a myriad of well written articles only to be rejected by the site and or client, offers various subject matter, and have consistent work available?

Thank you for your time,

Craig

Thanks for those links, mate. I have articles on Ghostbloggers and Constant Content but am always on the look out for other places to market my literary wares.

Oh, and I couldn't agree more with your advice to avoid the content factories. Sites like Elance and Odesk are the pits and should be boycotted by every online scribe who's serious about writing quality content and being paid a fair price for it.

I have a report with more than 100 sites that list possible jobs. They vary in fee structure though so if you guys want a copy, let me know. It's only $7. I thought I would mention it specifically as several of you are asking.

Also consider running your own ad in the Warriors for Hire section in this forum.
I get work that way too as I am also a writer.

thanks to those that did put up some links to writing sites.
Much appreciated. I actually just got wind of hire writers, so we'll see how that goes. My gig on fiverr has been finally getting some buyers too, so the writing thing is going a little better I hope.

    Hey Craig,

First off, I'm sorry to hear about your layoff. It's tough becoming suddenly unemployed without a source of steady income.

There are several ways of getting writing work

    1. Bid Sites
    2. Content Mills
    3. Web content related forums

    The Bid Sites

The bid sites, such as odesk, elance, freelancer.com, peopleperhour.com, are where you bid (along with others) for jobs that are available.

While the bidding process may *sound* annoying, once you put together a half decent profile, complete a few jobs (both will only take an hour or two), and write a well put together bid, then your chances of succeeding are high.

At the present moment, I get about a quarter of jobs that I've applied to, and it only takes about 10-15 minutes for me to write out a genuinely interesting and engaging letter.

The only downside is, that there are many clients who want contractors (freelancers) to work for pennies a day, and post jobs that pay workers $5, $2, and even $1 per 500 word article. This is largely due to the presence of workers from Asia and Africa who are willing to work for far less than many "developed" countries.

Do NOT apply for these jobs. If you look hard enough, you will find a few jobs with decent pay. With good writing skills, and a few samples to show prospective clients, you will land these jobs above the other riff raff.

      Hi DT George:

Thanks for such an articulate response.

I have noticed that there are a lot of sites that got good marks for paying on time but the
funds in US dollars were very small.

One of the places was offering 2.37 for an article. Some in the 3.50 range.

The key is not only what the pay structure is but how long it takes to complete the project at hand. Anything that has my name on it I'll do with pride and dedication.

Thanks again and enjoy the weekend,
      Craig

    The Content Mills

Mills such as Constant Content and Demand Studios often offer decent rates. I would say, google for the BEST ones and spend an hour or so looking through the comparisons for each one to establish the BEST. Of course, sign up for several in order to maximise the amount of work that will be available to you.

Since you seem to know about bid sites, and since there are a number of suggestions in this thread, I won't go into much detail.

    Web Related Content Forums

These are a great way of advertising your writing services. You get a chance to set your own prices and conditions. Of course, you could purchase a WSO in Warrior Forum, but there are also many other forums such as Digital Point etc. You need to take your time to craft a really interesting WSO that will show your value to potential clients. A good WSO can easily net thousands of dollars in work

    Almost forgot

    Freelance Job Boards

There are lots of jobs posted in freelance job boards on a number of sites, such as the Problogger Forum, and even Craigstlist. The best thing to do is to go to an aggregation site like sunoasis that will pull freelance jobs from a number of different sites. These often pay a decent wage because they haven't been "spoiled" by the cheap (but low quality) content that is easily and quickly available on the web.

As a writer myself, these are quite useful links I will certainly use. Thank you, Warriors.

Craig, try using Warriors for Hire section. It costs $20 to place an ad there.

Try also writing directly to Copywriting, Web Development, SEO agencies with the request to outsource some writing projects to you.

while I was pretty new to writing and didn't mind the 5 dollard for 500 words I did see several jobs on the freelance sites that did pay something like $2 for 500 words and I thought that was absolutely ridiculous. I know I'm not the best writer in the bunch but I certainly think my articles were worth more than $2 for article so I don't take too many jobs from bidding sites due to the fact most of the higher ones only want to deal with people who have been a part of the sites for awhile.
I am going to try some of these other sites as well though, the content mills as someone called them. I liked that name for them. Thanks all for the help that has been posted here.

Why don't you try Hubpages. They allow you to earn income via Google ads and any affiliate service such as Ebay or Amazon. You can write on any subject under any category. The site will take share in 60% of your ad impressions. Not sure what that is, but it looks like you will pay 60% of your earnings.

    Here's a couple tricks:

Create Google Alerts for "Articles/writers wanted" type searches.
Use a "Search all of Craigslist" search engine with related searches of "Writers wanted," etc.
Create a Fiverr gig, digital point, sitepoint and WF

If I were you I would start with Textbroker. You can find titles, get paid on time, get educated about AP style, and contact satisfied clients for direct orders. You can choose your own titles when you want, and you can write as much or as little as you want. TB will teach you all you need to know about web writing.

When you control your production you can start expanding to other people's schedules.

If you can pass muster on Textbroker, you can survive "out there." Whatever else you do - you should put TB into your arsenal because there are paid available titles there every day and they pay weekly. Just learn AP style first.

Lots of the sites mentioned in this thread have long learning curves with less systematic returns.

If you're a native English speaker, don't write for less than a penny a word. And don't stay at a penny for long. Best of luck.

Just be careful not to underprice your work and get stuck at that low level of income. People WILL pay good money for quality writing. I used to earn good money at Elance, better than the revenue share sites. I started there at $7 and article and worked up to charging $25 an article.

I think the key is to specialise in a few popular niches. If you write well and communicate well with clients, it won't take long to build up regular work.

      Good luck!

You can try to write on Hubpages. If I am not wrong, quite a few writers over there are making decent money.

You can also write on Triond, it is very similar to Hubpages.
