FTP Issues, Suggestions?

Hey Warriors,

I have a couple sites on my server that won't let me ftp to them either in my FTP client or through DreamWeaver.

It's only on 2-3 sites and the other 20+ sites don't seem to have this issue.

Am I overlooking something simple?

What would have caused this?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Scot

Are you given any errors? Or it just won't transfer over when you highlight and transfer? The other sites you are able to move are on the same host too?

same hosts, in DreamWeaver I get a box that pops up and says, "file activity incomplete. 1 file(s) or folder(s) were not completed"

Then I'm given the choices to either Save Log, hide or Cloce the box.

Yes, the other sites are on the same host and they work fine.

Another thing I noticed, not sure if they are related, but I'm also unable to change permissions in cpanel on the site either, I get the following message:

/home/niches/public_html/ index.html chmod failed: Operation not permitted in /home/niches/public_html

    Scot,

Do you have another way to FTP? An FTP client? The reason it won't let you FTP is a permissions setting. If you can't see what the permissions are on the folder you are trying to access, you probably ned to contact your hosting support and have them check it.

    Thanks,

    John

      Hey John,

I'm the server owner, so the buck stops here and I'm clueless

I can't ftp in with FileZilla, I can't fp in through DreamWeaver and I can't even change the file permissions on this site in the cpanel.

I'm stumped, never seen anything like this and all other sites on the same server work fine.

Try using SmartFTP. It'll continue where you left off when you suddenly get disconnected. I'm not sure if this is the problem, but I really find SmartFTP more helpful than FileZilla.

If you suspect it is a file permission problem, log in as root and chmod the files to 777 (making it accessible to everyone). Ftp the files as usual and chmod it back to its original permission.

    hi Scot,

If you are using Windows on your PC/notebook, try the following:

    a. Go to DOS Prompt
    b. type in "FTP <your website FTP link>"
    c. Enter your id and password

If your connections failed at (b), then you may want to check your DNS to see if the name is resolved correctly.

If your connections failed at (c), then you may want to check your userid/password combination.

    Scot,

Can you log into your master account and access from there? If you have cpanel, then you should have WHM. That woiuld be the first place to check.

    Thanks,

    John

Very strange, thanks for everyone's suggestions but nothing solved it.

My tech guy will hopefully have a look at it in the morning.

I did just move the site over from another server today, is it possible to be able to access everything else but not be able to transfer a file in while the DNS are propagating?

It'll be a file permissions error on the server, caused by either:
    - incorrect server configuration, or
    - that the files on the server are owned by a different (FTP) account than the one you're logging in as when uploading via Dreamweaver (this means that Dreamweaver can't upload / overwrite / update files on the server)

You mentioned you moved the site over from another server - depending on how you did that, the owner permissions on each file may not have been updated. As such, you'll have files on your new server that you cannot edit with a different account.

Best liase with your tech guy on this one, and/or your server provider (unless you're on a dedicated server which you support).

You can do ftp works through your cpanel easily with no error & it's more fast than ftp client if you have the latest version of cpanel.

Scot, I have exactly the same problem with a site I've just moved over to a new webhost. The dozen or so other sites on the webhost are okay, but I can't even upload a wordpress theme to this one.

The interesting thing is that my friend in India can ftp to the site just fine, but I can't do it here in Australia. Very frustrating. Off to try some of the suggestions now.
