Reliability of speech to text programs

Writing is part of the daily work of most internet marketers but it's really time consuming and my typing speed is very slow. What speech to text programs are really reliable and actually write accurate what you speak with as little as possible mistakes if any at all?

I have found some on google mostly something called dragon or even that the microsoft word has this option but at the same time I saw many people commenting on blogs that they are not very reliable and you have to edit whatever you write.

Does any of you use that kind of programs? and what is your experience with them? Additionally can you use them on email or wherever you want to write (blogs, forums etc) or only on word editors programs?

Let me know if you would recomment any?

I personally use Dragon Naturally Speaking. It is not perfect however it does save me time.

There is a little learning curve but I think it is well worth it in the long run.

Thanks Brian, how exactly does it works? is it possible to use it wherever you want or just on a word editor? Additionally on their website I see that there are 2 different versions with a big difference in price, which one you use and if you know what are the practical differences...

      Thanks in advance

Windows comes with built in speech recog software, so if you are on a budget i would start there. Personally i have been using DNS (dragon naturally speaking) Premium and although you have to "train" it at first it's a great piece of software.

It gets better after every update and has reached the point where i can dictate a 1000 word document in minutes with maybe 5 mistakes.
There is a cheaper "Home" version but with the requirements you have Premium is what you want:

Use Dragon 12 Premium with virtually any Windows application. Dictate documents in Microsoft® Word, OpenOffice™ Writer, or Corel® WordPerfect®, work with spreadsheets in Microsoft Excel®, create presentation text in Microsoft PowerPoint®, manage email in Microsoft Outlook®, search the Web using Internet Explorer® or Mozilla® Firefox® or Google Chrome™, post to Facebook or Twitter, and more — all by voice.
Dragon 12 Premium even enhances the experience of using your voice with two of the most popular web-based email applications — Gmail and Hotmail — offering Full Text Control and commands for the most frequent actions in Internet Explorer 9, Mozilla Firefox 10 or higher, and Google Chrome 16 or higher.

  • When people experience issues with using a speech recognition program and/or feel that it just doesn't work properly for their purpose, the problem in most cases is then "not" with the software, (especially if referring to Dragon).

    The problem could be...

    1. The person not being able to enunciate. (to speak clearly).

    2. Using a cheap microphone.

    3. Recording in a noisy environment.

    4. Not taking the time to train the software properly in order to recognize their personal speech patterns and use of vocabulary. ( whuzzup Jo, it's like this.... uhmmm, to make money online you gots to buy my program aaight?? )

    5. Not using software with the most current and fastest speech recognition engines available.

If all of the above is in place, (and you use the best version of Dragon (or other) that you can afford, you should be ecstatic with the results.

A couple of things which are also worth mentioning. You'll need a pretty fast processor for your computer to make it worthwhile. Otherwise you'll have to talk so slowly, it will be quicker to type!

Also, don't forget to proof-read the end results before posting online. I've seen some hilarious articles where people either haven't bothered, or forgotten to check.

Actually, I have Dragon. I'm typing this with the Dragon right now. It's sort of an unnatural way of speaking, for example you have to say punctuation, but it really is faster.

It takes a lot of training at first. For a whole month, I started the day by reading to the Dragon. Then I fed it documents, one by one so it could look for words it didn't recognize. then I would read those words. it takes a lot of training at first, but now it works great.
( not perfect, it still makes mistakes.)

There are services you can hire online. Where you call in and someone transcribes.

    Eban Pegan always recommends one.

Dictation software is a mixed bag. I explained it elsewhere, here's a copy of my explanation:
