Video Creation Tools - what are the good ones?

I am trying to find out what tools IM'rs are using to create the various videos that have words appear and then have their voice over playing during the video?

I have Camtasia Studio 7 for screencasting but I am looking for good video tools for making videos that are typical used in marketing videos you see everywhere in the IM world.

Thanks for any info offered!

  • The "typical" cheap looking white background with black text marketing videos I've noticed everywhere in the IM world are usually made via creating a power point slide presentation, and then converted into video. Ok, sometimes marketers get creative and add some color to the background. But either way, that's how it's done on an amateur level. From there you could advance into using Adobe® After Effects® or similar if you want to get a bit more pro.

Powtoon looks interesting for more of the animated approach. Still looking for tools that present the words typing out on the screen as audio is synched in the background saying the words as they appear (best video creation tool for that type of video building).

      All great ideas so far....thanks!

Youtube doesn't allow videos like this on their site. They will shoot you down fast if they see this. But if you're using it on your site, then i guess it's ok. Don't know why you woudn't want to record yourself though.

It's best to buy a camcorder and record yourself talking - with your face on the screen, basically giving the advice that you would give in the "article-video".

I have been told by very successful IM'rs here in the Austin, TX area to set up my initial sales video in the fashion I have mentioned above (and they said not to shoot video of me talking....that approach apparently is not as effective for the initial sales or squeeze page video).

At this point, I am just investigating my different options for creating a variety of video content for marketing videos.

Using powerpoint to create the text slides can do the same job while you can talk over the top. I use camtasia to record myself and the screen at the same time. Gives it a personal effect which connects with the viewers in my opinion

I have not tried many of these tools but I will soon. Instead of Camtasia, which I consider to be expensive, I use their free screen and voice capture tool called Jingo. Jingo saves in shockwave flash format which is very, very, very lightweight, especially compared to powerpoint which has choppy voiceover and can end up as a 26 Mb file once I add voiceover and music.

I have spent the last two days trying to find a reasonably-priced swf to mpeg4 converter so my vids will play on mobile and still retain the lower file size. Most converters either don't see swf source files or just don't work.

By the way, typing is screen capture. you can't do that in power point although you can embed videos but not swf in power point.

You can (kind of) get the typing effect by using an entrance animation called Wipe. To the right of the animations area you'll see an up arrow after selecting wipe. Under that arrow select Effect Options and change it to "from left" and, to the far right in the Timing area, change "On Click" to "After Previous" and then increase the Duration to a length of time that looks natural for typing.

Thanks for the thread! Shelley Owens

So do any of those products actually do what the OP asked? Coz I looked at most of the links and I couldn't see any that do the typed on screen text as you talk videos?

I have seen them a few places so there must be a way to do them?

    Any ideas?

    Cheers

    To make this:

I created different slides in Photoshop then imported them into Sony Vegas to animate them and put the whole thing together.

I record my voice with Camtasia and then pull that into Vegas as well.

You could also use Audacity for your voice which will give you more options to alter how your voice sounds but I prefer the ease of Camtasia.

Nice list of resources, I have used many of those tools, I think the "Take Away" here is that sometimes you have to use many different tools to get the best possible result.

I often export in MOV, then compress to a h.264 format with a custom frame rate depending on the content and the transitions it can cut your over all size down considerably.

I think its all about what your doing and the publishing platform your using.
