Hi, yet another question from me:

I have read from you guys that having a domain that contains your main keywords is good for search engine rankings.

My two questions:

1. Do dashes between words count negatively towards this effect? (is there a difference between www.becomerichfast.com and www.become-rich-fast.com in terms of Google rankings?)

2. Is there much, or any, difference between having a .com domain or a .net, .org, .info domain?

Thanks in advance!

Regards

It is good to have keywords in the domain name.

That being said, dashes doesn't do that well as they are hard to remember although they don't have much impact on SEO.

People are more used to .com so it is better to go for it as compared to .org or .net.

    1. Dashes between words definitely don't count negatively but they are difficult to remember. I mean, a visitor is more likely to find your site through a search engine rather than typing the domain name directly into the browser window. Simply put, you need to put due efforts in SEO in case you're going the hyphenated way.

    2. In the eyes of search engine, there is no difference between a .com and a .net. However, as I said in 1 above, it all boils down to getting in front of the traffic. A .net might be good for an affiliate promotion site but definitely not for branding purposes. In fact, for branding try to get both the .net as well as .com versions.

For SEO purposes, dashes and the type of domain don't matter all that much. There could be some subtle differences but these are minor in comparison to other factors such as the quality and quantity of incoming links and basic on-site SEO optimization.

For branding purposes, there are disadvantages to dashes and to using something other than .com.

When it comes to people, no dashes is better. When it comes to robots (Google), it makes no difference.

If anything, dashes should make it easier for a search engine to separate the words within a domain name. There's a reason why this page is named 79255-domain-name-concerns.html and not 79255domainnameconcerns.html

It's been my experience that some people tend to think that domains with a lot of hyphens (i.e. best-dog-training-cheap.com) are spammier and less trustworthy than single word names or one hyphen domains (bestdogtrainingcheap.com / best-dogtrainingcheap.com) so I would advise against a domain with lots of hyphens. If it's purely for SEO and not for branding at all, it doesn't matter to the search engines.

If you register any other extension other than a .com, make sure you ALWAYS brand yourself with that extension - i.e. "BestDogTrainingCheap.NET" in everything - including your logo. Otherwise people will forget and go to the .com competitor.

If it's really a good name and all the other extensions you want are taken, settle on what's available.

If it's a name you coined or if it happens to register well in the search engines, take the .com, then the .net, .info, and so on.
