Marketing Strategy for Travel Site

Hi All,

I've been around the IM game for a few years now, but to be honest have only really tinkered with various 'grey hat' strategies to make a few bob here and there.

I am now developing a brand new legitimate travel site, and am wondering what the best marketing strategy would be.

I would like to achieve the following;

- Create affiliate scheme and get affiliates warmed up pre-launch
- Buy some email list shots
- Kick off SEO strategy
- Some legitimate advertisements

The only problem is, i'm not entirely sure how to start any of those, especially the first one.

Does anyone have any experience of this, or know of a good ebook or something?

    1. Market
    2. Offer
    3. Content
    4. Traffic

It's impossible to provide you with any sort of useful, or comprehensive "marketing strategy" in a post within a forum.

My advice, get a mentor, join a paid membership, or network within a mastermind group.

The travel niche is pretty hard to break into. We have had a couple of clients in the space and the easiest method that we have found is to use Adwords.

However if you are looking for a more content based solution then start with finding the long tails for destinations and producing outstanding content. Most areas have interesting places that you can write about.

For example as I sit in my office I am looking out at Durham cathedral. If I was going to promote hotels in Durham I might write about "The haunted history of Durham" (there are a couple of supposedly haunted hotels that I could link to from this content) or if I was trying to promote hotels in Phuket I might write about 5 bars off the beaten track that you need to visit. Take an interesting slant on your content.

Personally I would save my money (or put it into PPC) and not buy the email list shots as you need to think about your end customer.

True you might get lots of hits on your content but your conversion rate will be low. Think about how you search for and buy a holiday. They are typically planned for a certain time and people normally have a destination in mind so the things that they care about are hotel rating, what there is to do in the area and cost. If you can provide a cool or interesting slant on any of these then you wont go far wrong.

Not knowing your offer makes it difficult to advise.

In general I would think laser targeted long-tail PPC (not only Adwords) might bring best results. And it is crucial to know your metrics (ctr, cr, cpc, cps).

If your own profit allows to pay a CPS of $20 or above go (additionally first) after affiliates. After that has kicked in and provides you with sustained sales, you might leave PPC and let the affiliates do all the promotional work for you, concentrating on your site.

But do PPC first, avoiding broad terms.
