How I choose a domain name

As a basic rule when creating a domain name I like to create a brand name and use a keyword mixed in with it. It gives you a brand and a keyword to rank for.

For example:

mccollbodybuilding.com

jamesposters.com

Hope this helps!

That's a nice tip but I would also like to stick with the number of characters being 7 to 12--Makes it nice, sweet and memorable

I actually just had to go through choosing a couple fo domains for the adult network marketing opportunity I just started promoting. After doing a bunch of research on the topic I wrote a pretty lengthy article on it and posted it on my blog for people who signed up under me so they could benefit from my research.

The article can be found at heavensallxclub.com/2009/04/choosing-an-adult-home-business-domain/. (Sorry...I can't link yet ). It is geared towards the MLM I am promoting but the principles hold true regardless.

It's good if you are committed to the niche for the long term. You might have some trouble selling the site in the future though since it's too strongly associated with your personal brand.

I wrote a fairly extensive (and hopefully helpful) blog post on this same subject:

How to Register a Great Domain Name (Even if the One You Want is Taken!) at iElectrify.com

Maybe it will help someone wants a great domain but their ideal one is taken!

point of view of someone who is a newbie, and just surfing the net. I think i would want something that's not too long, catchy, and creative, in that way it will be easy to remember. what do you think?

I tend to say keep it under 10-11 characters if possible and if you can get your main keyword(s) in there so much the better, preferably at the beginning. Also make sure there is no room for misspelling.

I also always type the domain name, including the www, in my browser to see how it looks as a full domain, as a visitor would see it when they type it.

If it a niche site, I would go for keywords in the domain. If it is a personal blog, I would go for branding.

Make Google Adword Keyword Tool handy and don't go less than 1,000 Global Monthly searches.

Also, Google for "unexpired" coupon codes before you register a domain. A dollar saved on one domain is still worth the bother.

I use wordtracker for search popularity and estibot.com for potential domain value.

I would go by the main keyword that I want to target, and base upon the total search volume per month. A ".com" is more preferred over anything else.
      Find the following:
      (1) Find out how many searches the keyword receives every month.
      (2) Find out the number of search results in Google, preferably searching without quotes.
      (3) Find the amount of advertising money for the main and the associated keywords. This is tricky - and would differ based on the goal of your site. For example, an adsense site and an affiliate niche site would compare these differently.
      (4) Among the sites shortlisted using the steps above, work on the site that you understand the best first. If you see that a guitar micro-niche and a dog micro-niche are same otherwise, go for the dog niche if you understand dogs better, and guitar niche of you understand guitars better.

    Thanks for the tip.

    I didn't realize the importance
    of researching a keyword for
    the domain name.

    It does make sense.

    Thanks...

When checking keywords with google adwords tool also check cpc bids (cost per click) to find interest among advertisers for your keyword domain.
