Advertising an MMORPG Game

Hello Warriors,

I've purchased a private MMORPG game server that involves anime and cats and I'm planning to launch it during the 4th week of June world-wide.

My target audience are school-age to young adult gamers who are interested in playing a game with guilds and monster boss hunting.

I want to know if some of you can share some knowledge about how I can advertise this effectively, I'm targeting audiences from France, US, Canada, and Europe.

It is hosted in a private cloud server and it is networked on 3 different countries.

I have some hundred dollars to spend for the advertisement of this venture and I want to know how I can spend it wisely and cost-effectively.

Thanks,
Mesina

PS: I've posted this on the "Off Topic" category because I really don't know which category this should fit on.

Try facebook ads . Either read some articles / get some courses or hire someone to start the campaignes for you . Facebook advertising can really be your best choice.

If it has anime and cats... where do I sign up?

Facebook Ads should work. Create a Facebook page for the game if you haven't already. You can also try PPC campaigns like Adwords.

I think Facebook would be a good start. You have a lot of targeting options to choose from, and games tend to do well on FB

Thanks for the awesome tip! It seems like facebook has become the new advertisement park here in the world wide web.

            Twice,

I posted it in the off-topic forum then travelinguy told me that it's best to post it in general marketing discussion. That's why I posted it here.

So it is a server on Ragnarok? Not an entirely new MMORPG?

Yea I didn't mention it was Ragnarok but I mentioned that it was a private game server.

My friends customized it to the point that the whole story line and graphics are all about cats and anime.

    Hey Mesina,

    Here's some ideas for you:

    * Facebook ads - just target your demographics & like similar anime and games
    * PPV - bid on other MMORPG games URLs. Your game probably caters to the same audience as Aion Online?
    * Create and distribute trailers and gameplay video on youtube and game trailers website
    * Ask for feedback on gaming forums - perhaps offer them a special deal of some sort? (like free premium account for 6 months or smth)
    * I know there are some good advertising networks where you pay for clicks and your ads appear on game related websites or within games - but unfortunately I don't remember their names, but perhaps someone will jump in.

    This should get you started...

Pretty good graphics by the way.

Facebook, PPV and media buys will do great!

Also get in touch with relevant websites to see if they'll do a review of some sort

You'll want to advertise on Facebook without a doubt, there's bound to be hundreds if not thousands of people who would probably your game. Don't count out Twitter either. Some of their ads can be quite good too. If you can find forums/blogs similar to your niche, that will help too to promote.

Ragnarok Online franchise is a massive hit with millions of players. I didn't know Gravity allows such private servers and re-design of their games. I guess you covered the legal aspects already. Am I right?

I'd recommend you contact with gaming media, and send them pre-launch press releases. Then let their editors try your game before the launch. It's free PR, and in gaming industry it works better than advertising if you have a new title. You can also buy banner placements on mmo sites. People may tell you that banners don't work anymore, but it's not true for gaming.

As for Facebook advertising, I'd like to add that you can also place your ads in other games. It's tricky, but works like magic if done right.

One of the most successful private server games / emulations I've come across is for Ultima Online - UO T2A The Way It Was | UO Free Shard | Ultima Online Free Server | Free MMORPG

You need a diehard fan base already built in looking for you, and then you also need to add your website to game sites that allow voting and tracking of clicks etc, almost like a directory.

Since you bought it and might not know how to code this is probably a losing battle because mmorpgs require constant tweaks and updates. I would recommend trying to pay off other private game servers to close down and tell their players to come to yours, or do some joint promotions since video games don't need a steady flow of players, they really need an influx, followed by a steady flow.

Definitely use social media and not just advertising on their website. Create a FaceBook page, Twitter account, you could even create a Pinterest account to post graphics from the game.
