What's your most effective Keyword Tool ..and why?

Happy Sunday everybody!

With the plethora of keyword research tools out there, (and I've tried quite a few), at least how I see it, it seems to boil down to personal preference.

Some people don't mind paying for a '1-off' product, or don't mind paying for monthly memberships....... then.....

There are some people, whom really have an issue with paying for something that you can get for free - eg; Google Keyword External - and, may even give you better results.

Now for me, I feel like they all have their pros and cons. I find it hard to find one that literally has it all -sadly...

Plus, am I right in concluding, that the 'paid for' tools, basically just give you - convenience, sometimes more lateral words, word-storage/management and time-saving features?

This is as opposed to Google External, where it's manually done and takes a bit longer? (I realize however, time is money).

I'd love to hear about some other quick and efficient ways to use Google External, as I still prefer it to others, but the time factor can at times be daunting.

I usually have 2 browers open - 1 for External, and then another one to check the words in Google for page results/competition. Maybe there's a shortcut to this?

Anybody have a better and quicker way? If so, your thoughts will be greatly welcome

Thanks for listening,
Mark

      Hi there,

I find since google changed the external keyword tool to include actual search numbers it's pretty invaluable.

Also, it's completely free, and you don't need to "guess" at whether the particular keyword tool you're using has google's numbers right or wrong etc...

      Hope that's useful

          Thanks Lawton,

I'll go over there right now and have a gander,
but I have to say, that it'll have to be something pretty special to pry me away from External

I've actually used it, but it's still in beta, it does however offer a very cool package.

It's actually not too pricey if you get it now(compared to other tools), BUT from what I understand, that price will go up when all of their features are fully functioning and all the kinks are ironed out - then the price will either be equivalent or more than the other tools out there.

You can get an online tool called Google Keywords at

                https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

If you want to get even more specific to your region etc try the Google Insights for Search, you can compare search volume patterns across specific regions, categories, and time frames.

                Google Insights for Search

There are many other tools like Wordtracker etc however the Google tool is very comprehensive and the new additions to this tool make it invaluable for the researcher. Not only that but you can also tailor the searches to your own country and region. You don't need an adword account to use this tool.

considering how enormous the web is today, no one tool has it all

your right its pretty hard to beat the google tools

but I have been mining the free wordtracker tool with a tool I made and it has been very revealing on some of the long tail phrases I have been finding that are getting more traffic than the root keyword

I tested this against Googles keyword tool and it did not even show these gems

to boot it all the competition was almost non existent

So I use multiple places to make my findings before jumping into a niche

                    Hi Ed,

I guess if not one tool does it all, just jump and rotate with the tools you do have eh? I just want to simplify and keep it to the bare minimum, but you can't argue the fact, that if more than one tool helps give you the best results - then go with it eh?

the key here is knowing your niche, you can miss some low hanging profitable fruit if you only focus on one set of tools

it does not take much more work to do this

I've used lots of KW research tools both free and paid for. I'm on a frugality kick now so I've surrendered to Google. If Google provides anything I need then I use Google for it.

Google's keyword tool is one of the best free tools available. And with Google Trends & newly launched Google Insights, the package becomes really formidable.

Having said that you need to define your purpose for analyzing keywords. If you want to advertise with Google Adwords, it would help if you pick keywords using Google tools. If you want to advertise using other PPC networks, it would help if you analyze keywords using more than one keyword tool.

Personally I use Google's tool and DigitalPoint's tool.

Free Keyword Suggestion Tool (Wordtracker Suggestion Tool & Overture Bid Tool Combined) & Keyword Generator

These two seem to satisfy most of the keyword research requirements.

                Regards,

                  Hi Anup,

                  Thanks for our reply,

Hadn't heard about Google Insights, if it just came out, maybe that's why....getting back to what I mentioned in my initial post, that we all have a our preferred methods and tools.

i'm just wanting to lean towards time efficiency, but without compromising the research process.

I've decided after paying for a variety of different tools, that I'll return to and stick with Google - if it takes a little longer, oh well....no big deal, I'd rather spend a few more minutes extra, knowing I'm getting the best selection available .......

                  heading over to Insights now

......however, I'm stilled baffled as to why people would want to pay 50-60 bucks a month, when Wordtracker's collective data 'worldwide' consists of a grain of sand's worth 0.63% of global data!!! 0.63%!! YIKES!

...and they openly disclose this figure...

yes thank you David, that's the reason why I returned to it, as you're really getting the data from the horse's mouth. I'm sure it will never be 100% accurate, as the stats are in constant fluctuation, but it is much closer than most of the other ones out there

I'm still puzzled why Wordtracker is still so popular, when they use just a weeeeee smidgen of what the actual results are on the internet???. I'm talking weeeeeee itty bitty...yet people still pay monthly....hmmm...?

yet, I still like to hear peoples' system for this External, as maybe my method I mentioned above, may be costing me more time than necessary - not sure, maybe there is another shortcut?

For SEO I combine 2 tools:

        1. The Google External Keyword Tool...
        https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

That gives you the keyword phrases people are searching for on Google and the number of searches each month.

God I wish I had this tool years ago...it is a pure gold mine of information.

Once I find some search terms that suggest people are looking to buy a product or service I'm selling I then check to see how competitive that keyword phrase is to SEO.

        For that I use...

        2. SEO for Firefox...
SEO for Firefox Extension: Free Search Engine Optimization Browser Plugin for Firefox

With this free software you do a Google search for a keyword phrase and along with the ordinary Google search results you can see a whole pile of information including Google Page Rank, Yahoo links, Alexa ranking etc etc.

At a glance I like to see what each of the top 4 rankings on Google have for Google Page Rank and for their links.

If you find a search term that has a reasonable volume of Google traffic (say 150 hits or more a month) and of the top 4 pages on Google at least two of them are Google Page Rank 0 or 1 (without a whole pile of links) then you can probably rank in the top 4 on Google for that search phrase within 1-2 weeks just by putting up a good page and getting a couple of good quality backlinks from blogs, forums or related sites you already have set up.

If you optimize for 150 different keyword phrases this way over a year and half make it to number 1 or 2 on Google that's 75 pages sending you 50+ hits a month or 3,750 highly targeted hits a month.

(Most likely this figure will be many times higher if you're linking different pages to each other intelligently).

More importantly most of those hits will be evergreen...they'll keep coming indefinitely.

If you did optimized 2 pages a day this way that would be over 700 pages in a year or 35,000+ highly targeted hits a month.

If you were doing this seriously full time you could probably do 5-10 pages a day 5 days a week or 1,250 to 2,500 pages a year bringing in 62,500 to 125,000+ targeted hits a month or over 4,000 highly targeted hits a day.

Convert just one half of 1% of those visitors into a $20 sale and you'd be making $400 a day on front end sales.

Capture 5% of those visitors as email subscribers and you'd have 200 new email subscribers a day.

I can remember doing this process using Overture to guess the search terms and then using Google searches and manually checking each page in the top 4 results to see what their Google page ranks were.

        I'm not complaining though.

I still rank number 1 on Google for many of those keyword phrases I optimized for years ago and I haven't done any work to stay there.

They're still bringing me traffic and sales.

Now you can easily check a keyword phrase at a glance and pick the low hanging fruit.

        Kindest regards,
        Andrew Cavanagh
