Single Opt-in Subscriber With Aweber is Pending Confirmation

by Chett

Hi,

I have some subscribers in my aweber account which are confirmation pending but i'm using single opt-in.

I have looked at the Aweber FAQ and don't feel any of those things are the issue. I have also tried using my own emails and do not have a problem with them.

Has anyone experienced this before and found a solution?

Thanks Chett

    Hi Chett,

Could it be that the subscribers have not confirmed their confirmation Email yet ?

I usually send those subscribers a regular Email reminding them to confirm the confirmation Email. This gets about half of them to sign up as opposed to them forgetting about it if I didn't take action.

That's not abnormal: according to their email addresses, some subscribers will still be sent a confirmation request even if you've disabled confirmation for the list (i.e. are using single opt-in). Aweber does this for a reason - it works in their clients' collective favor, overall.

I see. Thanks Alexa. I didn't want to spend more time getting traffic if there was something wrong at my end.

Normally these are emails that Aweber deems as "high risk".

They could be from a ISP that is known for making spam complaints. They could be a known "complainer" (in regards to spam complaints) or could even be something as simple as the email is known to subscribe but not confirm or may just "look" suspicious to Aweber.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers,
    Coby

If Aweber uses confirmation messages on some single opt-in subscribers - will they just use a generic confirmation or will they use the confirmation message in the confirmation section if you customize the message even if it's not selected to be used due to single opt-in.

I have the same thing - one subscriber as "confirmation pending" and I'm using single opt-in. I was thinking, could it be because the subscriber's email address is not valid, i.e. there's a typo on it?

If you setup a custom one - they will receive the custom one. If you don't have one setup they will get the default Aweber one.

        This is also a possibility.

Email addresses that are really short or use 'spammy' words in them get forced to confirm regardless.

There are always people who will have to confirm their email address whether you have single optin activated or not. I believe this includes any email address with 4 or less letters after the @ symbol (so something like whatever@big.com) and any other email addresses with common spam words inside them (eg: something like johnsmith@hotmail.com).

I use single optin and yes, there are certain email addresses that will still need to confirm to be on your list. What I have found though is the large majority of these email addresses are fake ones that would never get confirmed anyway. So I don't bother telling people they may need to confirm.

One thing to point out, in addition to these built in quirks of Aweber's selective disabling of single opt-in, is the fact that if you are using a 3rd party form "linked" to your aweber--almost always by default--Aweber will require double confirmation. As a side note: strange thing.......whenever I google single vs double opt-in, everyone says I'm crazy to not use double opt-in on all my lists. But in practice, most of the people I meet, including some very successful ones, mostly use single opt-in. The selling point of double opt in being, with your custom thank you page, one can direct people to find your email if it ends up in the spam folder; and mail services like Aweber can use the audit trail created by double opt-in to defend you against erroneous spam complaints. I'd be curious to hear some good rationalizations in favor of single opt-in. It's always a temptation of mine but I'm a little bit chicken!

You can do exactly the same with single opt-in.

Some of the arguments commonly adduced in favor of confirmed opt-in (there's no such thing as "double opt-in" - that's just a misnomer for "confirmed opt-in" - nobody actually opts in twice: they just confirm their email addresses to be subscribed to the list ) are entirely specious and based on fallacies.

My main reason for using single opt-in is that I earn more, that way.

I'm not interested in the "argument" that the quality of the list is better if opt-in confirmation is used, because all those "higher quality subscribers" are still subscribing to my single opt-in lists anyway, so it's just not a realistic, "straight-thinking" argument at all.

I'm not interested in the "spam complaints argument", either: the proportion of spam complaints you get depends on what you send and how you send it and the expectations of the recipients, all of which you can control. If someone's going to forget who you are, six months later, and "report spam", having confirmed their email address at the time they originally opted in isn't going to make the slightest difference. I don't for a moment believe that whether or not people will unsubscribe or even "report spam" at some later stage has anything to do with whether or not they originally confirmed their email address at the time they subscribed: they won't even remember that.

There are some more legitimate arguments in favor of opt-in confirmation, too (though not always the ones claimed by autoresponder companies!), but I think - from repeated conversations here - that it's fair to say, at least, that you won't find very many successful marketers outside the IM/MMO markets using confirmed opt-in, these days.

If you want to see more reasoning in favor of single opt-in (including explanations from many successful marketers inside the IM/MMO niches about why they, too, now use single opt-in), here are some threads to look through, in which both perspectives are given a good airing.

I don't even see the option for me to make any of my lists on Aweber single opt-in.

Can someone explain how I can set this up?

For me it's under list settings > confirmed Opt-in > Require Opt-in on Web Forms > Change this to off.

However I think i've heard people say once you've started a list with "require opt-in on web forms" as on, then you can no longer have the setting for that list as "off". Maybe that is why you are unable to see the option. Can you see the option if you create a new list?

I've tried this on old lists and even new ones. I don't get that option

I have an account that is about 7-8 years old but I still have that option. You might want to contact and ask them. One thing to note though is that you cannot change a double optin list back to a single optin list once that list has it's first subscriber. It has to be changed before you start collecting any leads at all.

I contacted aweber and they told me why. They said that if that sombody keeps trying to opt in with the same ip address they will make them confirm to make sure they are real. There are a few other reasons but this is probably what happens to most people.

        Hope this helps,

        David

I had the same problem. After years of having my subscribers in my health niche confirm I decided to go single-optin but could not find how to change it.

After contacting Aweber support about it they said I had an old account and would have to upgrade to get this option but would lose my old statistics if I did this.

They said that I could have single optin on my existing account if I started a new list so that is what I did. I do not have all the facilities of the newer accounts like finding the non opens and sending another broadcast just to that segment but I pay a flat rate which is cheaper than paying according to how many subscribers you have.

I have heard of this happening I think it has something to do with spammy looking email addresses. That's why it always pays to make sure your confirmation email is legit because sometimes those things get fired out even on single opt in.

@David You are absolutely right. This step is necessary on the part of Aweber to cutoff spam caused by their members by subscribing to lists using automated scripts.

Do "Confirmation Pending" emails still receive the auto responder messages? or do they have to confirm to receive the emails?
