Hi all,

In your opinion, what makes Whiteboard videos so expensive? I've seen people charge $199 a minute:confused:. Why would anyone pay that much? How can a simple video cost so much to produce? Is it that people don't realize how easy it is to make these videos? What are your thoughts?

They definitely have a really cool feel to them when I watch them. I don't know how much they go for across the net, but it's all about supply and demand.

Before I heard about how easy they were to make I would think that a lot more goes into making those than a traditional video you see online.

I guess it's a matter of perception is reality. If people perceive something to be of a higher quality they will pay more for it.

Thanks for the feedback. I was personally thinking of making a site selling these offers. I guess it really is all perception. People believe these are hard to make when they are quite easy to make.

I was also thinking of having a price much lower than everyone else. Hopefully eat up all of the traffic just for me Competition is good in capitalism.

There are many templates out there, so one can get one under $30 and do it on their own. But you would need to edit the template with Adobe After Effects. I even see many people offer them for $5 at fiverr - but they are of course not the unique ones you find on the quality sites.

Yea, you do usually get what you pay for.

It depends what you're after. If you want a budget version, using library images (already drawn) you can get some good prices for creation, such as the service in my sig (cheap plug).

However, if you're getting an artist to draw create bespoke vectors from scratch, there could be several sketches (and potentially hours of work) in 1 minute of video. In this case I don't think $199 in unreasonable.

are you also going to create the storyboard and script?
are you also going to do market research needed to create a convincing & converting story?

$199 or even $999 will not get you a quality animated sales video

how much do you value your time working for others... < $2/hour?

or are you talking about the crappy videos that just animate the words spoken, or the seizure inducing ones that use the bad drawing hand animations?

I was thinking of having the user write their own script. Possibly this could be the cheap way to go for the customer. If the customer wants me to write the storyboard for them and the script I can understand why the video would cost so much. Thanks for the tip.

I have used video scribe and have been able to create some decent quality video, but when your talking about using a "real Artist" it does take a long time to produce a good video, plus tons of time doing edits to get it looking just right.

If you get the light wrong it looks odd, if you have a lot of mistakes it takes more time to edit, there are a lot of things that go into creating a video.

I think that for this market, you do not need network quality video, so you can find plenty of 'starving' artists out there willing to do some work, at a fair price.

On average it takes around three hours for each one minute of video, from start to finish unless you get a really good artist that never makes a mistake...

Where have you seen it for $199/minute? If its for professional grade I would be all over that. Most of them are like $500-$1000/minute!

The going rate for professional video production is $1,000 per finished minute. If you're talking commercial broadcast quality video (which I outsource)... you're looking a MUCH higher prices. I have a friend who charges as much a $70,000 - $100,000 for a 30 second t.v. spot.

Just whiteboard videos. TV ads can range from any price. If I remember correctly a 30 second spot for the 49ers/Ravens SuperBowl were $3,000,000

Quite a lot of very professional companies charge less than a grand a minute. A quick Google Search will display many listings of very good companies charging $199 to $399 per minute. Where you got a $1,000... *shrugs*.

I saw a YouTube user by the name of KingHuman mention these services earlier last week. That got my attention. The prices have ranged all over the place. It really appears it depends on quality. I still need to look into this more.

Well, it depends on what type of quality you are seeking. And of course, as long as there is good demand at $199, there will always be people to supply.

I've made these videos before, and it would definitely take around 4 hours to build a couple minutes. Took even longer to sync that up with the audio.
I now understand why they cost so much, that's because it takes that much effort to put into it. They are also paying $20/month to use the program, although I've only used the trial so far.
I'm considering selling this as a service on Fiverr, and charging $5 for each couple seconds. The cheapest person I've seen on there was $5 per second.

The price range for such video service is very wide, of course it's not just about the video. Some include voiceovers, custom images and much more, while others provide only basic package.

I am guessing people charge this much because there is a different market for high ticket whiteboard videos.

It's like cheap coffee and high class coffee:- they both sell, to different crowd.

Reason they are so much? Because as an artist, I have to sketch out, or Hand DRAW the images that go into the animation.

These kind of videos usually get more clicks than other types. They are not easy to do and take most artists longer than what you imagine. It's not just about throwing a drawing on paper, it's about how to get it the drawing to work with the concept the client has given you. It takes some thought and imagination, and some crumpled paper and lots of "redos" sometimes.

And then there are redraws...when the client changes his mind.

So, you are getting a unique product. The "minute" charge covers a minute of video, which can take hours to do.

So, UNLESS you want something that someone else can pull off of the internet and throw it into a program, you are going to pay that much.

I usually charge less than what most companies do which is $300, but I have learned to put a limit on how many images I will draw.

There is whiteboard videos that are created with software, and there are whiteboard videos created by a video production team.

The first is worth a fiverr.

The second is worth far more than the price you pay a professional to create one for you.

I guess the price does depend on the quality of the work.

If you go to somewhere like fiver, its $5, though personally I don't recommend going with $5 vids.

For video prod websites, figures could be anywhere between $400-$1000+ per min.

Big ticket studios go for 2k+ to 10k per min
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For DIY people there are softwares you can buy, it could set you back something like $20-$50 per month and you can create for yourself a whiteboard animation from the available stock illustrations.

For some people, this is enough. But of course, everyone has a different take on what is "good enough" for their business.

Custom whiteboard animations, the kinds that I do, are a different animal altogether. There's actually a lot that goes into production of custom whiteboard videos. I guess you actually need to experience creating these videos to understand.

It's not like you can just pull the things to draw out from somewhere behind you, slap it together in a few minutes and viola, you get a defibrillator for your your click through rates.

It takes a lot of time coming up with the ideas, writing the script, getting the VO, drawing the illustrations (sketch, revise, finalize), getting them animated, syncing, post production editing etc, If you factor in the time you need to interact with the client and do revisions/polish up you start to see the hard work involved in creating custom videos.

Working directly the artists who actually creates the videos (ehem) will save you a few hundred dollars compared going to a studio and that studio outsources the work to the same artist.

You can get whiteboard videos for cheap but of course, you better get your expectations straight.

Interesting thread, but I still think the CONTENT is the most important and if a cheap whiteboard video gets your point across, why spend more.

You can get the software for Windows to do these for $27 and you do NOT need to use templates or stock images. The way they work is with vector graphics and you can convert any image into a vector graphic for free.

I do have to say that as someone who is starting out, I can not justify $200 for one yet (I say yet). But they do look effective. Therefore, in my opinion, like other things in this market such as cameras, stock images etc, start with the cheaper versions and then move onto the more expensive. So I would choose to contact someone on fiverr with your requirements and get them to quote. Let them know you have $XYZ to spend and then let them come back with a yes/no/revised offer. This was, you might get it cheaper, they might need the work and settle for something less.
I just think for most of us, who can't justify the >$200 expense I can lower the quality to match my budget and still get the message across. But this is just a nooby talking

You just have to find both and watch them. I'm rather CERTAIN you will see the diff.

If you don't, I'm sure you'd feel the diff if you attempt to produce both. The expensive videos (as long as the seller is pricing appropriately) will be faaaar better quality than one that you would order from, say, Fiverr.

I've made some white board animation videos for clients and I charge $199 per minute of finished video as a base price. For script writing and voice over work there is an additional charge. The reason I charge more than the guys on fiverr is because I am creating original art work for these videos.

The people who can charge less than that for these kinds of videos are using clip art and royalty free stock images. If you want a video with original art work, you're going to have a very difficult time finding it for less than $199 per minute.

Yes, you can tell when someone just plugs in a piece of clip art and pushes the button on the video scribe software.

I actually use video scribe software but I use it with original artwork and then I spend time turning my drawings into vector images that the software can work with. The drawing done by the software looks more realistic that way.

Do a search on google for whiteboard animation and look at some of the videos that people are charging $1,000 for. Then look at some of the offers on fiverr. You will see a big difference.

In my opinion, at the beginning whiteboard videos use to be sketched by real drawers, and hiring a pro drawer to keep drawing for one minute doesn't sound cheap.

That's just part of the reason, added to the fact that whiteboard animated video keep viewers more focused and increase their interest in your promotion, which can potentially convert into more sales.

If you know how to use the whiteboard video software properly, you will be able to come out with a very high quality result. Almost like the one that created by a professional artist. Then you will be able to charge your clients for a little more than those crappy providers on fiverr.

I have proved that my clients demanded a high quality result but with affordable cost. They didn't want me to draw it life, due to the cost, time, etc.
So, I found the software help me a lot to provide them with cheaper solution.

In the end of the day... the clients just want me to create the custom drawing for their business. And the software do the rest.

I'm still charging $150 per minutes today. This is only for my custom drawing and video creation. I don't do the script writing and the voice over audio production. And I still get many clients for this. Well, especially on my offline market, because I can easily persuade them directly to hire me.

    Good luck.
