How many of us have created our own product yet ?

It would be great to know how many fellow warriors have
created a product, such as an ebook or an ecourse that is
finished and available to buy !

Although lots of money can be earned from affiliate income,
I often see that it is recommended to create our own product
and market that, by getting it on clickbank or paydotcom.

I saw earlier that Kevin Riley ran a product creation course that
many attended. I guess most of those created products ?

Now is your chance ( in the interest of research ) to flaunt your creations.

Please also say if you have made a sale - even one counts
And if you are on CB or PDC or some other affiliate network.

I think this will be of encouragement to all of us.

Thanks

  • What a great idea for a thread! I've often wondered if the best way is to create a product of your own and let other people sell it through affiliate programs and stuff. Seems to me that that's basically what the "gurus" do.

My product is my content, but it doesn't pay much!

It is not that hard to do. The proverbial trick is to write about something you are a) knowledgeable about and b) passionate about. If you do this it won't seem like hard work at all, and this is coming from someone who has written hundreds of thousands of words. I do it because I enjoy it.

Bottom Line: Be interested in something and you will be interesting.

    Be well,

Well, I don't agree entirely. While it's very helpful to be passionate about a topic, it won't help you further if your topic is NOT profitable. Some niches are not hungry and there is not a market... it would be a waste of time to start building something with a lot of effort, only to discover that it doesn't sell... which will discourage you further anyway... so... market research is a good thing :-)

I totally agree with this. In my WSO I recommend finding a buyer's market first then creating your product.

I remember Amit from PPC Classroom said he created his first product on how to get a better GPA thinking it was brilliant then he launched it and nothing....and nothing...and nothing. I guess college students prefer beer lol.

This quite often the first and worst mistake new Internet marketers make and it can be depressing and time consuming.

After promoting affiliate products for years, I created my first
product related to joint ventures and Web 2.0.

I do not use CB or PDC, sell over Plimus. Sales are OK.
But I have to admit, it was a challenging venture...

I'm now on the way to find more affiliates and JV partners.
The affiliate program pays 50% (here's the program),
        strategic partners get more.

        See my SIG file.

Interesting thread-I only have one product-decided to play a different game to see which Affiliate marketing company sold my products the most
        (1) Clickbank got the most sales in a week,no affiliates, all done by Adwords
        (2) Paydotcom came in second,no affiliates as yet, sales through my blog.Free for one product-good affiliate sign up page.
        (3) Ejunkie got me the most affiliates to join me,however no sales in last week.Did not promote, was on their market place all most immediately product listed-few problems with set up but basically easy to do- at $5 month which is cheap- interesting to see the outcome
Cost me money to set this all up but wanted to test the market as will be producing more Ebooks this year-All said and done you still have to have a good product,or it flops fairly quickly-Never give up-strange the one you think is great flops, the other you do thinking it is budget sells-morale -guess you make a Ebook for others and not get to in love with it yoursef as you lose perceptive to your audience of buyers-Thanks for your time.

I too enjoy writing and I have created several e-books around my own topic of expertise which is related to careers management / job finding and everything that goes with it such as CV and resume writing, preparing cover letters and answers to interview questions. (See my products at Premium Career Guides New Job Action Plan)

These are all available on ClickBank and I have a few sales of all of them, not a s many as I would like despite the high number of hops so I'm looking closer at the sales message to improve the conversion rate.

Funny thing is though, that an affiliate in Australia sells more of my e-books than I do (a Warrior too, you know who you are) presumably because his website is more trusted than mine by his followers.

On the other hand I'm going great guns with other Clickbank vendors whose products (like Jimmy Sweeney's Amazing Cover Letters) are related to my main activities.

A technique that works for me, and I read it by a famous author (maybe in Stephen King's On Writing?) is to stop half-way through a sentence.

That way when you return you can just continue with the thought you started and the creative juices start flowing again. Try it. It works.

Anyone know an easy way to create the ebook, so that when I take a break and return I'm not lost at where I've left off?
In one of my Non-IM niches I have over three hundred cheapie products for sale. In my Writing niche I have created about ten of my own products so far. In the IM and web design niche I have created a couple but nothing really fancy. I have also sold some as PLR that I wrote for others but never got paid for. My biggest problem is with ghost writing. I actually have two "Best sellers" but I can not use them as a reference per my contracted agreements.

As for taking a break and not getting side-tracked when you are writing, create a synopsis and leave enough room to scribble notes all over it. You can mark that "great next idea" down as well as what you want from any particular portion of the book, change tracks ... often times when I am writing, I begin with one concept but the writing itself seems to lead in a different direction. Do not depend on notepad but keep a pen and paper handy at all times and print up any notes you have written on your system so that you can scribble more notes.

      Just my two cents

Yes - 12 and counting...everything from ebooks to membership sites, DVD's to paid coaching programs.

Great to see so many others heading down the path to having your own product - it really is the best use of time because of the leverage you get when your product is finished. It may take you a few weeks to create your product, but once it's out there (assuming you have done a good job of uncovering an opportunity and positioning your solution well within that opportunity space) you get to collect on it over and over again.

And yes...it's really cool when you have hundreds of affiliates promoting your product for you, to me there is no better feeling than having lots of partners and happy customers.

Intrepreneur - you asked if there is a good way to write an ebook when you have long periods of time where you can't get to your writing...

Here are a few tips I've learned to use:

      1. Do less research and writing and more teaching. The #1 most powerful secret I've come to realize in creating and marketing info products is that you can get MORE money for teaching a step-by-step system on how to achieve a desired outcome than on writing 200-pages about a certain topic.

So, all of my info products begin with a highly desired outcome with proven demand. Then, I dig up as many questions the market has about how to reach that outcome. Next, I put together an X-step or Y-day set of steps to help them achieve their desired outcome - and I typically outline in Powerpoint (just as if this was a course, not an ebook). Then, I test my system on 10-20 people in my marketplace (not friends or contacts, but people who really want to achieve the desired outcome I'm targeting).

From this test I get feedback, case studies, testimonials which I then turn into a full-fledge course - depending on the market and competition that may be formatted as an ebook, a home study course, a membership site, DVD, etc...

By structuring my info products as step-by-step programs it's easy to work on each question or step when you get a spare 15 or 20 minutes at a time without losing your place.

Creating information products is what turned things around for me to make more than "hobby" money. It's also great for building a list of buyers so I would encourage anyone to give it a go. Trust me it's not that hard to do. But remember once you have your own product created that's only half the battle. You need to get traffic and buyers.

I have one product on ClickBank the others I sell on my own using DL Guard and PayPal.

Over the years I've created plenty of my own products. The two central areas I concentrate in are: information based products and graphic based products.

Oddly enough, both types generate a good income for me, but the information based products outsell the graphic ones every time.

Soon, I will be offering a custom ebook creation service for information product authors. I have a few personal clients now for the service and they have loved what I've created for them. So, we'll see where this project takes me and how it will fair overall as compared to the others.

    Hi

Creating a product or products gives you credibility, flexibility and control.

You look much more credible when you're talking to potential JV partners if you have your own product and you're not just looking for second tier partners to promote someone else's product. Even if you're a professional JV broker having your own product gives you credibility.

Your own product also gives you the flexibility to test new sales pages, new sales funnels, new sales processes and marketing techniques that aren't available to you as a simple affiliate.

And it gives you control. You control the product and everything that surrounds it.

To answer your CB or PDC question, in the past I've used CB and 2CO almost exclusively, but I am now in the process of moving the majority of my business over to PDC, because I have some serious issues with CB. 2CO is getting to be borderline for me.

    Enjoy your day!

Now I'm creating a full blown affiliate centre where all my products are going to go up, and I agree that making your products has a lot more pride and joy to it when it sells vs selling someone else's stuff.

I wrote my first e-book in 2007 and recorded an audio as a bonus. I sold about 20 e-books and decided to completely revamp the business.

Over the winter I did a lot of writing and improved the e-book. I also pretty much re-wrote another PLR e-book and created 2 more bonus product reports to go with the e-book offer. I also decided to switch to a Wordpress site that I could more easily manage.

So, now I will be launching a new package deal within the next week or two as soon as I finish up the Wordpress site and test it.

This was a lot of work but I think it is really important to enjoy the product creation process which kept me motivated. I like the writing and creative aspects of product development the most.

I was asked to pop into this thread (not sure why)

Honestly, I have a personal problem with threads like these only because
they too often end up to be a giant pitch fest, which surprisingly, this
hasn't become yet (but its early)

Anyway, yeah, I create my own products. Been doing it since 2006. My
database tells me I've got like 30 something out there, some sold out
      because they were limited releases.

Oddly, the product I'm most proud of, isn't in the IM niche. I won't mention
it by name because like I said, I don't want this to turn into a pitchfest.
Ironically, though, this product doesn't sell squat. I've made like 6 sales in
2 years and am finally getting my Clickbank check next month from it for
like $112, or something like that. I have to look.

If you do create products, don't do like I did with that one. Make sure
you do your market research and create something that people actually
want. I just created it because it was a lifelong passion of mine and I
wanted to. Never expected to make money off of it.

      Guess what? I was right.

I personally have mostly been an affiliate in my online career so far. It's been very good to me. I'm now trying to make the transition, at least partially, to product developer. I want to establish a list of customers who like my products that I can go back to over and over with related ones.

With that said, I will never leave the affiliate business altogether. There is simply too much money to be made!

      Thanks everyone for your input.

I have been REALLY encouraged to see how many of us
are creating products and selling them.

Most of us are doing ebooks and some courses.
Does anyone create and sell software products ?

      How is that going ?

Oh yes and a saw a few membership sites as well.

Just want to say thanks again for all the positive feedback

Yup I've got a number of products (ebooks, courses, membership sites etc) both in the IM niche and in "normal" niches

First one is always the hardest, so pick something easy and just get it done. You can build on it from there.

I created the product from scratch. It was a low priced report, made few sales and when sales started to die down, I flipped them.

Look, the problem with me is that I am a very impatient kind of guy. The idea worked for me but I dont think that is a right approach in the long run.

When I first started out looking at internet marketing I was looking at affiliate marketing. Then I thought, "why should I promote someone elses product when I have such a great one in me?" So, I sat down and wrote a book.

That was long before I discovered the Warrior Forum. Now I make a living off of my book. Just lately I started working on a couple of other ones with more ready to come out soon.

I have learned so much about IM in the last couple of years. It won't be long until I am doing much more than just making a living.

I also think this is a great idea. I'm trying to come up with a product that actually does a step-by-step marketing process.

Every time I get an email telling me that I can make $10,000 a month it really doesn't give enough information. The deal usually is "Get this product for free" which means send me your credit card number or your paypal email address and you get the first month free.

I wish they would say this up front.

Sorry for venting...thanks for giving us a chance to promote a new product.

I "created" a couple of products previously. I didn't really create them as far as I'm concerned. One was an ebook that is based around the credit repair niche. I took information that someone else wrote, and used it as a guide for my own book. It didn;t sell so I changed it to a membership website.

I've only sold 3 memberships since then, but I also have not done a lot to try and improve the sales page or to drive more traffic to it. I'm seriously considering giving a postion of the content away for free to build a list, and then have an upsell to get access to all the content.

My second product was a small membership site in my signature file around blogging. Not much to that site, but it's more an experiment to try the method. It has not made me any money yet.

I creating my own product right now, one that I started from scratch and is 100% mine. It's a guide to creating your first website and is targeted to newbies who have no idea how to do it. It's a step by step guide from start to finish. I walk them through how to get a domain name, and how to set up hosting. I show them where to get free HTML eidtors and then how to use them. I walk them through how to setup a webpage, then how to use an FTP manager to upload it.

I'm putting the finishing touches on it now. It's going to be a free guide to build a list, and I will upsell videos of me creating a website so they can buy the videos and watch me do it.

    I have created several products,
and they are solid. My sales aren't
    dismal but they aren't exploding
    either.

It might be my sales copy

    Let me run something by
you guys since were on the
    topic anyway.

If this is the wrong place for
this, let me know and I'll edit it.

Id like to find an affordable copywriter
emphasis on affordable, I would be
willing to pay for results i.e. some
sort of royalty for every sale.

So it would be an affordable upfront
    fee (fee amount negotiable).

Then the royalty would be something
like $5 per affiliate sale and $10 per
    non affiliate sale.

This could scale up massively for the writer!!

    Here's an example:

Say we had 100 sales in 2 weeks time.
Half of those sales were non affiliate
sales and the other half were affiliate
    generated.

    50 sales-x-$5 = $250.00
    50 sales-x-$10= +500.00
    $750.00 2 week payout

One month of sales using this example
    would net the writer $1500.00!!

If anyone knows or works with a writer
that would be open to an arrangement
like this please let me know, we could
draw up and agreement sign some papers
    and start making some money.

    If you got this far

Thanks for reading all of this!!

I've made a couple, and I must say: making your own product is the best way to make $$. (You keep all the profit.)

The first thing I had was a membership-based service. It was for the purpose of indexing/helping sites to rank. I made a couple thousand a month off of it, then it died down. I closed it eventually.

I also wrote a couple books (how-to guides) that I still get occasional sales from. (NON internet related).

And now I'm working on the most kick-ass Shareasale WordPress plugin ever which I will start selling this summer.

Oh yeah and I give away a plugin called Ghost Pinger. Not really a "product" but it's something I created and am proud of.

I've created almost a dozen products in half as many niches.

    1) You don't have to be an expert at all. You can find one and partner with them.

    2) If you're having trouble with just getting it done, rent a hotel room for a day or weekend and lock yourself in there. Unplug from the internet if you have to! Just get er done!

    3) eBook writing takes 10 times as long as capturing video (either screenshot or via camera) or recording audio (either on the phone or using a mic). You really should look into doing that as your first product: it's perceived as a much higher value.

And yes, I've sold many many copies of all of my products. What good is a product if you don't sell it?

Made the jump from being an affiliate to becoming the master of the domain, but it had it's trials and tribulations for sure. Because i assisted in creating and went through 2 different programmers on the project, my article shop script became a labor of love for me. To date, it's the only script online dedicated to selling articles (authors can sign up and sell their own too).

The product started as a concept and it really took off when i started putting it down on paper. What i couldn't anticipate was the massive programming turnover that left me high and dry a couple of times. Support to the client will always be an issue when the product is complex and the management is small. I learned that the hard way.

I'm now focusing on smaller products that provide, again, great benefit to the user..because I am one of those users! I think to be successful in the marketplace you have to understand your clients, and to me, that means to become one of them. It's very easy to sit back and think something is what they need. However, it's completely different when you've identified the need because YOU need it yourself!

Years before knowing about IM and WF I wrote SongMix Method: How to Write a Hit Rock Song in 1 Hour. Then when I kept reading about creating your own product in the war room I thought - oh yeah, I wrote that silly eBook like 3 years ago. So I put it on CB.

I sell one every week or so.

The thing that amazes me is the amount of affiliates who found it and promote it. It hardly converts at all, its only $7 and yet tons of hops.

I don't really see how you can "fail" with an eBook - that thing will sit there for 10 years or more and make money for me that I would not have otherwise.

The thing I learned from the experience is that the power of Clickbank is kind of amazing. Also, that you really need to create a book with a very large, very desperate market. My little eBook has a very small market with a medium desperation factor.

I am now thinking of buying the "desperate buyers only" course before I create my next product because I need some ideas of what to create.

Its also a coincidence that in my day job I have recently become responsible for creating all the training videos for our company's apps - using cam studio and windows movie maker! I think the "universe" is pointing me in this direction very clearly.

I have worked on one and only one product for over a year now. I have some spin off products because of the technology of this work.

Now, I will be able to tackle many BIG markets and it will be hard for someone to duplicate without spending an enormous amount of time and money.

I find working this way allows me to maximize my time and hit several different markets with the same product.

Some of my competitors are ranking in 100's of millions of dollars in these niches. I am just starting to release my new product that will compete with these big dogs.

I love product creation but it can interfere with your business if that is all you do. It is easy to get comfortable creating products and forget to market them correctly. You should have a marketing plan in place before you create your product. I learned this lesson the hard way myself. hehe

There are a lot of sites offering plr.Is it useful to bundle these and only create a unique salesletter. Having been selling Affiliate products for some 10 years on and off -guess I have shares in Google Adwords-sold a few however the cost to do that was more than the profit-result Misery-
Then created a few Ebooks of my own on things I like-result misery again-
spent 6 months working out what would really sell-more attempts and Misery-
Not knocking any one here, but what do you really call success? I find it so easy for someone to say "created my own product selling great" to see a sig link to their product-My question is this-Are you really doing that well? can you show stats, and what the hell is the X-Factor to succeed at this-feel I am so much out side the brain with this it frustrates me something wicked-
Even my newsletters on blogs I have have died right off with new subscribers -even tho new great free content every week-Of course I am not giving up-However I go back to the fact there is a XFactor of being successful with any venture you attack-mine seems to be not available internet Marketing-Any advice from true money makers with their own products and how they really promoted them with honesty would be great-Then again if some one is making money selling their own products why the hell would they give the secrets away-
I trade the Forex every night in Aussie and do ok-but you know what after 5 years of failure with it I am not about to give my secrets away at any cost-Means I would be full of BS and need to sell my idea because I am bullshitting on my earnings----
That's it no more arm chair philosophy today-Any feed back and true help would be great-And for the people making a good living selling their own product -I am in awe of your success-Well done!
