amazon affiliate website idea

I know that a lot of people do amazon affiliate sites in specific niches. Has anybody ever tried a general amazon affiliate site? One that you can write reviews on any product ranging from shoes to hats, if you know what I mean?

sounds like a good idea but a HUGE project. start with the little things and go upwards. ie. selling on squidoo, hubpages etc.

    You mean like http://www.reviewcentre.com

A general review site does work, but the problem is that if a Google algo update such as Penguin affects the site then usually all pages on the site are affected so you need to keep that in mind.

I am sure this general amazon site idea is not so new and a lot of people might be doing it already. But the problem with this idea is that:

      1. it would require huge amount of time
      2. continuous efforts (SEO, analytics & etc.)
      3. and if you are not the writer or SEO guy yourself, be ready to invest huge amount of $$$ as well

So if you can invest time and money, sure, go ahead and give it a shot.

The idea is good to start only for those who are determined and can focus on what they start.

Not that general BUT if I do have a product that does well i.e tents - and I notice sales coming in on a regular basis I would pick other camping related items and build sites around that.

If I notice ONE product more than any other on the site is selling well I will devote an entire site to that product.

Ya but that's too sniper style, what are you going to do once that one product isn't available anymore or stops selling after all that hard work?

The key to avoiding that is to pick the right products.

As in the example I think tents are going to be here for the foreseeable future.

OK I thought you meant 1 product as in 1 single tent model. Yep thats a good idea.

            I meant let's say I pick tents.

I focus on "Family tents" and I write reviews of the top Family tents.

I pick 5-6 of the top family tents and obviously you have to pick the most popular.

Then I notice that only ONE tent model is selling really well.

I would then build a site around this particular tent.

The beauty is that you can do this in any niche and as long as you keep on building sites and finding new products/niches you don't have to worry too much about getting caught with no conversions when the product become less popular.

I can see how that plays out well in the short term but that model can easily disapear and then your site is useless.

Sorry to keep pushing the point.

If you are picking products that have been around a long time AND you make sure you keep on building sites in different niches this is not likely to happen.

Each to their own though - I have been using this same method for about 4 years without issues.

I really don't see any issue with going all out broad with your amazon product.

It will fly so long as you have an estore, categories, converting layout, great reviews and above all targeted traffic. It's much much harder to pull than going for a single niche while some people say picking one niche per site will become obsolete when the product disappears from the market but that isn't completely true.

Similar or newer version always pop out and people are very likely to continue searching for a long period of time and even when they don't buy your old, obsolete or unavailable product they can also opt for another or even buy something completely different and the commission still counts for you, that's Amazon for you..
