Question about Kindle font size for children's books

Hey All....

This is a quick question for those that have published Kindle titles that were targeted toward children. I know that it is generally recommended to publish Kindle titles in the 12 pt font. That it really doesn't matter too much because the reader can adjust the font size to their specific preference.

However....

What about books written for children and young teens?

I am writing a fiction book for kids aged 8-12. Ideally, I would like the font to automatically go to a larger font.

Is this possible, or am I over-thinking this and should go with the standard 12pt size font?

Much Success,

    Hi,

The standard format is 12 point and that seems to work fine in my children's books. I don't believe I could use a larger font. This is what the default seems to be.

You are over thinking this, because with the Kindle, the individual user can set their Kindle font size.

This is only an important question if you are publishing a print version of your book.

I think that the font size gets formatted (or re-formatted) to a standard size and then the user can adjust that themselves.

I recently was formatting a kids book with a lot of illustrations and wanted a larger font size so that the pic didn't drown out the text. What I ended up doing was putting the text ON the images themselves so the book was basically a series of illustrations, and that seemed to work just fine.

I have a Kindle and can confirm you can change the font size so it does not really matter - the user can change it to their preferences.

Not only can Kindle users change font size, they can change the font!

It's natural to want your Kindle book to look great and for the text to behave the way you want it to. However, I have seen a lot of Kindle authors get tied up in knots trying to get their Kindle book to look exactly as they prefer. This doesn't work because it's inherent in the very medium that the reader and the technology (are they reading on an iPhone or a computer, for instance) determine this.

Don't get hung up on how your text "needs" to look. Create a simple format and understand that it will be flexible in the ebook medium.

    Marcia...

The reason for my question wasn't in regards to the font size in terms of appearance.

For example, let's say I wanted to write a book about nursery rhymes for 5 year olds. The nursery rhymes would be short in length (say 3-5 lines), and I want to make sure that the text is large enough for them to read it.

    There will be no images.

As explained above, trying to control absolute font size on Kindle leads to results that will fail spectacularly on one or more of the devices that people use to read Kindle material. Let the owner of the reading device determine font size because that is how the medium is designed.
