Free Alternative to Camtasia Not Mentioned Before

I know lots of people are looking for alternatives to Camtasia and we see a lot suggesting Cam Pro etc however I just did a session with my students and one came up with this that I had not thought of.

Unfortunately this is only for windows users.

He showed me the Windows Media Encoder that allows you to take excellent quality screen captures just like camtasia and then use Windows movie maker to edit and add transitions and much more.

Most public video sites accept wmv files so a great and simple solution.

And Its all free!

Here is how to set it all up from the windows site.

And another interesting tutorial

SolutionBase: Creating video tutorials with Windows Media Encoder

And some more detailed tutorials

Hope you enjoy and show us the movies you made.

Thanks very much! I played with Windows Movie Maker one time for something totally unrelated, but never thought about using it for this. Bookmarking the tutorial, as I'm sure it will come in very handy.

One of the coolest tools I use almost on a daily basis is TechSmith's Snagit.

You can capture portions of your screen, the whole window, the entire page, etc... You can then save it in many different formats such as png, pdf, swf, etc...

They also include a very cool photo editing package built in.

PLUS... they have a screen caputer feature. Robust as all get out.

      Check it out.

Jing is good but if you are like me I say um and er a lot so being able to edit is critical and I don't think you can edit with jing can you.

The thing with using the Media Encoder and Windows Movie Maker they are almost exactly the same as Camtasia except you can only save in WMV.
