I don't know when you started your online business. It may have been a year ago or more likely several years ago. You are now past the shiny object stage, you have focus on your projects, and you have achieved some success. You have honed your online skills. You are making or soon will be making good money online, enough to replace any income you had before you started online.

I want you to cast your mind back to when you started. No doubt you have taken a few wrong turns, maybe more than a few. You probably had a lot of frustration. If you could go back in time and mentor yourself what would your best piece of advice be in how to be successful online ?

You may say perhaps learn affiliate marketing, or email marketing, list building etc but I want you to be very specific please.

Here's another way of putting it. Your best friend is sensible, reasonably intelligent, fairly successful but needs to make money for him and his family to live on.He has a pretty good job/ business but he is BORED beyond imagination. He thinks there must be more to life.He wants to make money doing something he enjoys and be free. He's realistic and wants to start a business of his own. He doesn't want to borrow and risk thousands in a brick and mortar or franchise. He's decided to absolutely commit the next two years to building an online business part time.

My question ( at last you say). Assuming you wont teach him yourself, is there a product or products or a mentor that you would tell your best friend he absolutely must get?

Very interested in your thoughts.

    Become a product creator.

See the process through from start to finish. That's my advice.

Would I refer this person to a coach or mentor?

    You bet I would.

It's easily a two year savings (in my experience) and pales in comparison to what you would spend on a 2 or 4 year degree.

Create products and sell them. Have a mentor guide the way.

    Thanks guys for your input.
My big question though- In order to learn about IM from a zero knowledge base or from scratch is there a (specific) product or products or a mentor that you would tell your best friend he absolutely must get?

    Thanks

      Must have product?

      None.

Everything you could ever ask for when starting with no prior knowledge in this business can be found right here in this forum, and for free.

      That's no joke.

I will start by networking with like-minded people..

There are lovely people out here that would give up an arm
    to help you succeed.

I will apply more than i get to read or watch.

Create a timetable for my jobs and make room for growth.

Rather than building hundreds of niche sites everywhere i will concentrate on a few mega sites..

Will take my list building and email marketing more seriously..

Portray my business as a brand and professional venture ready to go the extra miles to
    satisfy my clients..

As for your friend questions, different people different capability.

What is his interest though i don't give a damn with my interest so long
as it makes me money legitimately..

That's privileged information. Give me $5,000 and I'll tell you. All I'll say is that if I knew in 2006 what I know now, I would've been the richest kid in high school...and college. Hands down, would've been pimping. Pointless to think about that stuff though, it'll get you wasting time and energy thinking, "what if" or "if only".

This already happens to me. By virtue of being my friend, he'd have free access to what I know. So no, I wouldn't recommend him to any other mentor or whatever. He'd only have to listen to me and make the committed effort.

    Hey, Paul

It depends of your friend interests. Many people are going to their job everyday and hate their job. In IM you get a chance to do what you really want to do and be yourself. So ask him what does he want to achieve? What is his passion?

Most people who are looking to make money online will come across some good and some bad mentors along the way.

There are some mentors out there that I would recommend to them but the one thing I would tell any new person who is thinking about the idea of making money online is to go with the mindset that they will face a few or even many challenges along the way.

There will be times where they will feel like quitting. There will be times when they have no hope.

I will tell them that it is OK to have these feelings and these setbacks and they will have them many times at the beginning. What they must do at all cost, is to stay consistent and persistent and never give up no matter what.

I started in January of this year, although technically I set the wheels in motion as early as a year ago when I decided to purchase the domain name I currently own for my site.

So if I could go back in time to mentor myself I would say to "do something everyday" and create products on a monthly basis. Set up an online store to sell products from the get go. Set up social media sites up even before I have anything to share.

The past few months is where I've made money from my ventures and it's because I just started setting up adsense and also sold a course on Udemy. I also just set up a shopify store to sell digital downloads.

I'm far from replacing my income yet but I've made great strides in a short amount of time so I'm going to keep going. I've had plenty of times where I've wanted to quit but the great thing about these thoughts is that I cannot see any better alternative so it keeps me focused. I cannot see any job that could be more rewarding than what I plan to achieve.

As far as mentors go you have to realize there will be good and bad people out there. The most important thing to realize is that no one will want you to be successful as you want. Take advice with a grain of salt and learn to forge your own path.

It’s a big mistake to believe that only one mentor can teach you everything you need to learn. You must learn a lot by yourself, by studying and by putting into practice the lessons you have.

Those who believe that a mentor will take them by the hand and build their business on their behalf believe in illusions.

If I knew just three years ago what I know now, I would probably be a millionaire several times over by now. The fact that I made a lot of money without building lists / relationships and without any real idea of what I was doing, not to mention without outsourcing should give you an idea of how much I left on the table.

After really doing the research and confirming that the demand
is there in a given niche, I think one of the biggest keys is
seeing one project all the way through to completion and
    profitability before starting the next.

I have started MANY more projects, that were very viable,
that I never completed simply because I got side-tracked by
    another, often less-profitable project.

I guess you'd call that focus and complete follow-thru.
