Should I buy .co.uk as well as .com?

Hi,

I started a website a couple of months ago that gets most of its traffic from the US. Currently, I only have the .com domain registered, even though I'm in the UK.

I'm thinking of registering the .co.uk domain as well for two reasons (the second of which may not be valid):

1. To stop anyone else buying it
2. To encourage more UK traffic (not sure if this would actually happen..??)

However, I'm concerned that having a .co.uk may harm the amount of US traffic I'm generating. I write my site in American English, as the US is the biggest market, and I wouldn't want Google to start viewing my site as a "UK site" and harm my US search results.

Is there any cause for concern? Or should I just go ahead and register it?

Thanks!

To be honest, I wouldn't buy .co.uk domain in most cases. It will be harder to rank in US and traffic will be much lower.

However it depends on a niche and if you think that it is popular in UK then you can go for it.

How much are we talking, a few pounds at the most? Go and register it now while you can if you are concerned about someone else taking it.

Yeah, it's definitely not the money that I'm considering, it's only a few pounds as you say.

I guess I should definitely register it, so that nobody else can, but I suppose my real question is then should I use it? Will there be any positive or negative effects, on search ranking, etc, of redirecting the .co.uk to my .com for instance?

I would go with it - There won't be any negative effects on your ranking.
