Video websites - can they still be profitable?

Hi all,

I am thinking about promoting a video site for a relatively small niche market but before I spend too much time on it, I wanted to know if video sites are still worthwhile to build? Do people just go to YouTube nowadays and cut out the middle-man (site) instead of searching Google for videos?

Would love to hear your opinions / experiences.

Thanks,

Ingrid

Why a video site? For a relatively small niche how many unique videos can you produce? If you want to present the content in video format, you can still do it on a regular site. You will have the option to leverage Youtube for traffic.

I think most people go straight to Youtube for video content. In fact it is used as a search engine besides G.

But your main question is "can they still be profitable?". I believe they can be. But for a small niche your question should be is it worthwhile building a video site? How long can you keep the flow of fresh content (slideshows don't count)? Does it add anything to your visitor/customer experience that a regular site can not?

So, in short, I think a video site can be profitable but for a small niche I wouldn't bother.

    My .02 cents

Why not make a small niche video website that embeds Youtube videos?

    Attack both angles.
