Addicted to Buying Products

I am addicted to buying products on how to make money online.

It's been this way for a while - and I keep buying them. I've even purchased products more than once because I forgot! That's how I clued into the fact that I have a slight problem.

What's helping is that I've started a review project on my blog. (Thanks Tiffany Dow for the idea... And yes, I got this idea from a product I purchased!)

However, I still have the itch to buy things. So it only helped a little.

Do any of you have additional strategies for me to stop?

My goal is to stop long enough to actually implement some (or all) of things I've purchased. That's why the reviews are helping. But it hasn't gotten rid of the urge entirely.

Marketers sell. If you are buying, you aren't selling. If you aren't selling, you aren't marketing. You are just a consumer.

Make what you have work before you move on to the next thing. You'll find that making it work is the hardest part.

But once you figure that out, you can replicate and scale it.

    Easy solution,

Never buy a 2nd product unless you have implemented the 1st one.....

Its not only you, many people are addicted, I used to buy different products as well but then stopped it coz I wasnt implementing them... I hardly buy anything now..

You don't need to buy products, there's so many people who give all their information away for free. Pat Flynn from SPI is one; follow him here: Passive Income: The Smart Passive Income Blog

Every time you purchase one of those type of products, and receive the email receipt, move it to a separate folder in your email client. Now you have a list of everything you bought. Before you buy again, go back and check that list to make sure that:

    1. You haven't purchased it before
    2. You actually truly have a need for it (how will this help you)

And yes as the previous response stated, you can find a lot of information for free, at least to give you an idea on what to do. How to do it maybe be another story altogether, but it is a start.

So many products, especially the ones under $20 look good and seem necessary, but you really have to look and see if you really need it.

Especially the products that as soon as you purchase, the competition comes up with a better clone of this in two weeks.

So, it sounds like I should just have willpower and stay the course of implementing what I've purchased and using the reviews strategy to keep me motivated.

The Warrior Forum alone has tons of great information - and I've become part of the War Room too and am completely blown away by the generosity.

      Try the 48 hr rule:

When you see something new and have the itch to buy it - LEAVE the sales page and wait 48 hrs. Chances are by then you will realize it's not something you have to have.

Remember always that people who buy lots of make money products are called "buyers" and "target market" - marketers are those SELLING the products.

Don't substitute buying things for doing things.

I totally agree. I am starting to realize that one of the reasons why buying products doesn't work is that everyone is different. (Different life experiences and skills, to name just a few.) A coach can tailor a plan to fit the individual (a GOOD coach.)

Seems like on the surface, coaching may seem expensive but if it saves me thousands a year on products... (that may prove useless) ... that can even be a money saver long term.

Okay, I have a few deadlines to take care of and a festival to attend later on today - I do plan on commenting on more of what you guys have said but I need to tear myself away from Warrior before a WSO sucks me in.

I think it is good to review what you've already bought, choose one and stay devoted to it for 30 days and then review it. There is something about sales letters that can make them tempting and to appear to offer less work to acheive success.

It's been mentioned. You're a War Room member. Lots of the stuff in there was once an irresistible little shiny object just like the stuff you've been buying. Next time you feel the urge, just head in there and grab one or two freebies and go through them. Who knows, you might actually find a business model so exciting you'll want to stay with it and forget all about the WSO board.

Making money online begins with hard work, many expenses, and zero sales. Nobody starts selling something from the first days… or months.

So, if you want to ever see positive results you have to stick with a method and work hard trying to achieve a very specific goal, instead of going from one idea to another bright idea.

Internet marketing is complicated. You have to choose something you like and know and work on it until you will see positive results.

If you will fail, you will at least understand why you failed, and you will correct your mistakes. Next time, you will succeed.

I know what you mean by being addicted to buying

One thing I would recommend doing and it is a tactic I have used.

Whenever you buy or optin for a product, schedule an overview session for that into your weekly calendar and make sure you do it.

You then either schedule implementation into your calendar or bin the product.

Until you have processed that transaction or your schedule has no more room for overview sessions then no more products.

To the OP. If you are just buying push button riches then you are not building a business. My advice would be find all the information that you can on building a list. There will be no riches without a list, period.

If you just focus on making money you won't make much. Look, I genuine have a need to help people. But having said that I'm not in the charity business and I'm not in the hand holding business either.

Example: If I ran across a guy going up I-95 and he tells me that his destination is Chicago. I would tell him that he is going the wrong way, because I-95 runs North and South.(duh) But I'm only going to tell him once.

I'm glad you've found something to focus on now though, it's such a sin to keep buying information products. Why not take all the knowledge you must've amassed from all these products and write your own? Then contact all the people you purchased from previously and explain to them how you bought their products and it inspired you to create your own product, in which you'd like them to promote to their lists as an affiliate

Stay the hell out of rhe WSO forum, that is about al you can do. I feel your pain as I get attracted by BSO all the time and I am usually broke before the end of the nonth, but it is a hard thing to overcome. There is always something that sounds like it is just what you need, and so often I can't seem to make them work, or just get sucked in to another BSO before I even get started by the last one i got.

      Hi,

I had/have the same problem myself. I just could'nt stop buying products.

      Here's what i did :

      1. I went through all emails (they usually show up wso delivery/purchase.) I made a list with corresponding amounts that i had paid for each product. Include those oto's as well.

      2. Add up all your hosting account costs as well. Domain purchases as well.

You have a nice amount when you add these two together. Try it and believe me you will be shocked into working through each and every product on that list you made. All these purchases add up over time...

      I hope this helps.

This is what I call "filling your bucket." It's what people do when they feel like they don't know enough about something - they rabidly and obsessively consume everything they can find about it.

Basically, because you don't know much about the subject, you are in fact learning from every single thing you buy. Eventually you get over it, but if you can't afford to wait, recognise this:

The overwhelming majority of what you are buying can be found online for free.

Start regarding every product you want to buy as a puzzle. Imagine a product that promises to teach you how to make six figures a year using nothing but free tools.

    How could you do that?

Instead of immediately buying the product because you think it has some big secret in it like "install this magic program and push the button to make money fly out of your screen," try to figure out the secret.

What tools would you need to make six figures a year? Are there free alternatives to those tools? What are they?

Every internet marketer I know recommends Camtasia for screen recording. That's $300. Meanwhile, Microsoft Expression Encoder also makes screen recordings, and that's a free download from Microsoft's web site.

Hey presto, I just saved a bunch of people $300. Some people would hype that up and sell it as a $10 product, because it's good value. Who wouldn't pay $10 to save $300? I sure would.

Similarly, you can use LibreOffice instead of Microsoft Office. It's free, too. You can use GIMP instead of PhotoShop. Audacity is a free audio software program which works just fine for recording podcasts and interviews. Need to start a blog? Use Blogger or Tumblr; both work fine and cost nothing. The list goes on.

Name a task. Name a tool. Go hit Bing or Google and you'll almost always find something to do that task or replace that tool... for free.

And six figures a year? That's about $8,333 a month. Call it $9,000 and it's $300 a day. What would you have to do to make an average of $300 every day? How could you make that happen?

Three things are happening in your brain when you do this.

First, you are entertaining yourself in much the same way the product would have entertained you. Addictive product purchases are just a dopamine response. You read a product, you get excited. You want to be excited, so you get a new product. But it's not the product that excites you, it's the possibilities. It's the way the gears turn and the wheels get set in motion. It isn't being told how to do something that you love so much - it's thinking about doing it. This happens in your occipital lobe, the lizard brain. Lizards and birds alike enjoy collecting shiny things and stockpiling them. It's a natural sauroptid response. You are developing a little fantasy library of businesses you wish you had. And whenever you get tired of them, you go shopping for another fantasy. It's basically porn.

Second, you are making use of the information you already have. When you say "how can I do that?" your brain goes to what it already knows from other products and says "well, so-and-so already said that you can do it like this." You're digging through your bucket and pulling out whatever might help you solve this puzzle. This is the key element of your education. Slavishly following someone else's method is garbage. Creating your own method that is uniquely suited to your needs? That's what you're after.

And finally, most importantly, you are proving to yourself that you already know this and do not need to buy that product. The information in that product is already in your bucket, so you don't need to put it there. You can leave this product alone. In fact, once you have walked away from enough products, you should start asking yourself rather pointedly why you are not doing anything with all this stuff you know.

Marketing is like magic. It's not really magic, it's a trick. And most people... once they know how the trick is done... well, the magic goes out of it and they aren't interested anymore. But some people will still enjoy the trick even after they know how it's done. And a tiny few of those people like it even more.

It's that last minority that turn into the next generation of "gurus."

    Simple really....

Pick 1 method that has been proven to make money online...
    1. squeeze pages
    2. Ebay
    3. Blogging
    4. List building

    So on and so forth...

Then start learning everything you need to know about that one certain topic here on warrior forums or youtube.

As you know by now buying products will not make you successful. It is taking action that will do this.

A post I read a while back by Kim Roach was something like
"Sure Fireway to make your first 1,000 dollar a month online
    1. Set up your squeeze page
    2. focus on ONE traffic strategy
    3. focus on ONE affiliate program

    THAT'S IT!

Also I think what will benefit you more is not the information that is sold in the products you buy... but find out how they made you buy it in the first place.

Determine what words and marketing strategies they did to make you think "wow i really need this" then apply these same techniques into your own marketing.

    Hope this will help you

    Hi katherineolga,
Whew! I thought I was the only one who had this problem. It was getting so bad for me that I was about ready to go seek professional help!
I am exaggerating a little but not much. I was hooked on buying up all the latest things that hit the market. Like you I love to learn about new stuff, especially IM stuff and I am a real sucker for software products. It got to be so bad that I was spending money that I did not have and going in debt! So, I can really relate to what you are going through and I feel for you. What helped me get over my problem was when I took a really good coaching program that lasted for a few months and it was pretty intense. It focused my energy in being more productive and working on specific goals. It was also very time intensive so I did not have much time to spend on looking around at other things. I suggest you find something similar to occupy yourself with. I wish you all the best!

Yeah, follow the advice in your signature. Okay, okay, seriously, accept the fact that no product will do the work for you. It seems like you still believe that there's a system out there that is completely "hands off". Well it's not there, so stop looking.

Get a rubber band and put it on your wrist. When you get the urge to buy something...snap that rubber band on your hand as fast as you can. A little reinforcement is all you need. Good luck.

Think of how it can help you. Is it possible that you will make more money from using this product then it costs. If you can't see that happening you don't need it. Also by doing a little research you can usually find the same or better information for free.

Its not really that bad to buy products. The whole worlds economy is based on buying and selling products. There are tons of cheap Special Offers here for like 5 to 10 dollars that shouldn't hurt your wallet too much, plus you'll likely learn more from them. I've learned a lot from buying special offers here.

I think because you're a woman and many marketers will tell you that women are compulsive shoppers (emotional: brain) they love shopping because they want something while men buy what they need. And because most WSO salesletters are well written and that products are tempting, it worsens your situation.

Myself as a man, I want to buy more WSO products especially when you have great deals, but I stop by clicking the Buy button with these questions: Am I going to take action after the purchase, do I have the time to read, will it give me something better, cant I use something similar, but free ....? Then, take your time, no regrets and close your browser window.

That's a pretty brave statement to make in an internet marketing forum.

Try to stick to learning one product first before you go and buy another one. Stop looking for offers and focus your attention to learning what you bought and applying it first in your business. I know it's hard but habits can be broken.

You're what (you should have heard from some of your products I guess) marketers call "info-junkie". You just LOVE information, theories, histories behind techniques, models and tools.

You also seem to be affected by a classical cognitive bias called "Information Bias" which is the tendency to seek out more information than is needed to take action.

Information bias (psychology) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The first step (which you have already done) is to admit your problem, "I love to consume information but I have issues in applying them in the real world".

I used to have this problem myself when I realized I had this issue in one of the many information products I have consumed over the last years. It struck me like a lightening strike from above, "Oh my, I am an info-junkie, I need to transform myself into an action-junkie!".

My tip to you is to start applying, a little bit a time, some of the info you have consumed throughout your "info consuming career". This way you will start to see that progress and concrete results spawn from your concrete action-steps and your info-consumption is merely like guidelines or a guide for what to do, why to do it and how you go about doing it.

Now, what you've just read from me is "Info" too. But I hope you can see the golden tree in the forest so to speak, and APPLY what you have just read and hopefully being inspired and motivated by.

The worst thing you could do now is to think, "I'll THINK about doing that SOME DAY".

NO! Follow the technique ASAP so you build momentum, or the so called "snowball effect", just do it missy, you can do it, we believe in you and I believe in you! ^^,

If you created your own product and therefore could sell something that you knew everything about and knew it was good quality (because you created it) do you think you would be focused more on selling? Instead of buying? Thats what made the difference for me.

Well while you're in the buying mood, how about you buy some of my products?

Lol kidding of course (sort of). You have to get out of the bad habit of not implementing what you've learned. Do you even learn anything from the courses? I hope you have a good job or steady income right now... keep this habit up and you might have to resort to a 9-5 that you (probably) hate. Feel me?

    Hey Katherine,

I know how you feel, I too jumped at everything under the sun until I made a decision. That decision was to unsubscribe to all of the "gurus" list. Sure they provide value, however most of the emails were something to get you to buy stuff, and more stuff...

I would suggest just coming here to the warrior forum to learn about making money online, getting traffic, getting leads, etc... There's more than enough valuable information on here, just search and you will find...

You hit the nail on the head when you said that you wanted to stop long enough to implement some of what you're learning. It isn't doing you any good if you're spending all this money on these information products but not taking the time to actually implement the things you learn into your business. Start scheduling some time to go through (maybe one product a month - whatever works for you) the products but also make the time to take ACTION on what you're learning.

If you have a review blog set up. You can promote the products via affiliate links and share the pros/cons of each product or share case studies of things that are working (and aren't working) in your business that you learned from a specific product.

Sounds like you need to go through all the products you've bought choose a method you're comfortable with and start implementing. And try to remain focused on one of the products.

Hhahaa been there, done that! I found a way of stopping it! I unsubscribed from all the "gurus" and kept one or two. I kept the ones I had a good feeling about. I choose one area and focused on it until I had achieved something. Every product you buy has some "nuggets" in them. By nuggets, I mean some really good information...something that will make you read it three times and be happy. However, you can't do that with all the products you buy. Whatever you have right now, and I guess it's quite a few...choose one or two maximum and STUDY THEM HARD! DIG IN PROPERLY and IMPLEMENT!

If you don't want to unsubscribe from the other products, fine but don't read their emails;LOL! This is to keep the temptation at bay and that's how I stopped my compulsive buying. It was literally ruining me and I wasn't making money for myself...only for others.

    Hope this help....

That is some funny shit! Those products that you are buying is a Market. People who buy those have not figure out that they need a coach. They don't want to invest in a coach, mentor, or they can't afford it.

Conversely, go back and look at how much money you spent on buying products and look at the numbers. Men lie and women lie but the numbers don't.

If you had spent the amount on coaching you would be further along!

    Hi Katherine,

I used to be a compulsive MMO buyer years ago. I finally read some good advice that helped me stop.

Do not buy something unless you need to use it or will use it today.

In the beginning that advice was easier said than done. If it's a problem, then it has become a habit. So you have to keep asking your self that question and then find a way to walk away.

You also really need to be honest with your self about what may be happening.

Are you just buying or feeding your self with hope?

Someone mentioned that compulsive buying is also a form of procrastination. And that may just be a temporary salve for feelings of fear, etc.

Avoid fooling or tricking your self into thinking you're "working" on your "business" when you merely buy and never take any action.

as many of them mentioned here you are a buyer not a seller.

create one simple product and start selling that will help you to shift your focus.

Don't buy any product this month re-read whatever you have bought before and specially read twice which ever make more sense to you.

Make a business plan (doesn't have to be formal or really specific, just outline where you are, where you want to be, and your main focus on how to get there) then use that business plan as a litmus test to see if the products you're interested in, matches the overall goal or direction you are going with your business. That along side some of the other recommendations here (like waiting 48 hours) should help.

    Why stop buying?

You clearly are buying because you're getting pleasure from the process and reading the course.. You're not interested in implementing any these..

So for you, it's like buying a pair of shoes, or clothes..

As long as your not, spending a lot.. Don't see any reason to stop

    Cheers,

Seems like you are getting some decent traffic. Is your blog making more than you're spending? If so, I think you have a nice model. There are many of us who need to buy...but I promise you that once you pick a niche or business model and dedicate the same amount of time you do to learning about new stuff, you are going to succeed.

Buying products on making money online isn't a bad idea.It is a show of how passionate you are about it.
I would rather advise you work on implementing one product at a time once purchased before going for another one.
This way it will be manageable economically.

There is a period of time all of us experience when we have a new fresh idea. I forgot what it's called. It's the period of time when the ideas and plan we have is fresh and new and we feel like we can conquer the world with it.

As time goes on the excitement of this new idea dies and reality sets in and we realize we may have to work hard to get this plan to work or we run into some stumbling blocks and we decide to quit well wouldn't you know here comes an email with the latest greatest gadget and the cycle continues.

I have been there. The best thing to do is decide what you will focus on and TRY notice I said try to stick with that one niche. Get that up and going then at the very least you can afford to "idea" shop. Just my....02

My thank you button went away! I tried to go through the post and thank all of you for your wonderful responses but I think I broke it.

Anyway, this thread is several weeks old but I just wanted to stop in and give you an update on my situation.

All of your suggestions were helpful, some even made me laugh. I finally found something that helped me, though.

I had to step away from the forum for a while and I minimized my involvement in all forums and social networks for the weeks since my disappearance. Tuning out the chatter really helped and I've attained a much higher level of focus. I spent about a week making a new business plan. I chose something and have been implementing it ever since. I won't say that my income has been impacted yet, but I feel a lot calmer and definitely more productive.

So, thank you to everyone who took the time to help me/us (as there appears to be many of us) who share(d) this difficulty. :-)

By the way, I am back and ready to participate so I look forward to interacting with all of you in the future.

I do believe that making this issue public has really helped put me on a path of fixing the problem. That, and the fact that I do have a coach. Having one really, really helps.

It is encouraging (in a way) to hear that a lot of people go through this! Thank you everyone for your support and advice and humor. I love it - I wonder if people would buy a "how to stop buying products" product. If I had seen it when in the consuming mindset, I likely would have.
