I think my hosting company completely broke my site

Hi guys. My hosting company had some server problems the other day, said they'd be down for 6 hours, turned out to be 12.

Anyway, I asked them if there would be anymore problems, they said no.

I spent the past 2 days working on a new site.

A few hours ago, it went down again.

I asked them to fix it... and, they restored my site to the 7th... they keep saying this was the last good backup.

So, they have lost 2 days of my work.

Anyone else experience anything like this?

I assume you weren't keeping your own backups? I'm not certain what you're asking other than has it happened to anyone else or what advice you're looking for..

I have an idea who the host is based off some threads over at webhostingtalk.com but I'd rather not jump to conclusions.

  • Thedog,

Not sure who you are with or if you caught them at a bad time. I manage sites on hostgator, GoDaddy, Network Solutions and Nexcess.net and I haven’t heard of anything like this. GoDaddy did have that outage a few months ago but nothing was lost when the site was restored.

If it’s a no-name provider (i.e. not a mainstream one) I would consider moving your stuff somewhere else. It may only be a headache now but if you start making money from your site, it can be a much larger pain in the butt if your site goes down and you lose a few days of income. You can get files back but you can’t always get money back.

Also, I would recommend making your own backup on an external hard drive. Try not to rely on others to store a backup for you.

    Hope that helps,

    Shawn

      Cheers guys, it's Arvixe.

Been on with support for about an hour... they finally fixed it.

I know, I should have made a backup...

Anyway, seems the sky is falling in big time over there. Luckly, none of my main sites are with them. This is a new site I'm building.

Make sure you back up your sites guys!
