    Go with .net or .org

Some people use the .info, but I personally prefer not to.

If .com not available perhaps .net is your next best option!

Actually I found a very good domain name, but only info is available...it says its for 2.99,I am a bit new to domains so I am scared of godaddy...it charges for everything even if you don't get your domain.

I just learned what backorder is...one more domain I got through backorder will be ready to expire in 2105,and I paid 20$ now! And of course there will be an auction and most probably that domain will go for $40,000 which I cannot afford,so my $20 has gone waste.
The info domain is another one though.

Save yourself the headaches and use Namecheap, too many horror stories about Godaddy...

I would consider changing the name a little then using .com or going with .org or .net.

I would say .net and then .org. I would stay away from .info though... I've heard a lot of people connect that with a scam. Just what i've heard

      Hope this helps!

I've used .info in the past with no problem. However, I still prefer to go with variants of .com by using hyphens (-) or a prefix like "my" or sufix such as "4u". I try to keep it relevant and not too long so people have a better chance of remembering it, especially if they don't bookmark it!

PS I also use Namecheap and you can use their current coupon code SUMMERSMASH 30 times on one account. The last time I used this (last week) I had a 10% discount.

For me, the next-best option is a different .com, because I wouldn't want to build a business on a domain-name of which the .com extension already belongs to someone else: that would be nearly all potential downside for me.

(Obiter dictum: marketers tend to dislike ".info" domains but many customers/visitors/non-marketing people actually prefer them, if you ask them. My subscribers/visitors/customers in a wide range of different niches consistently tell me that to them ".info" looks like an "informational sort of site" which they instinctively trust and respect and like, whereas ".com" and ".biz" look like "just another marketer trying to sell me something". Personally, I usually register the .com and the .info, and I just redirect the .com I'm not using to the .info I am using. I care what customers think, not what other marketers think. If your customers are other marketers, that would be a different matter, obviously, but mine aren't! For ranking purposes, all TLD's are identical, of course, even though some people still imagine otherwise ).

PS If we're voting on registrars, put me down as a vote for Namecheap too, and for staying as far away from GoDaddy as I can get.

Hadn't thought about that Alexa and I can see the logic. So it really comes down to the niche you are in!

I think so, yes. I admit that if I were in anything to do with "IM-niches" I wouldn't dream of using .info domain-names, because I know they'd detract from the site's credibility in my visitors' eyes. But if you're promoting Safari vacations in Africa, or cauliflower soup recipes, or domestic water desalination technology, personally I'd always use the .info and register the .com only to make sure nobody else does.

          Thanks for that Alexa.

I would Thank you again but since I've just joined the War Room the Thanks button has disappeared!!! However, a Friend button has now appeared in Profile >Contacts & Friends!

Hmmm! What about a shoe site?

Is it an ecommerce site selling shoes or an informational site about shoes? That would make a difference. If it were an ecommerce site selling shoes, I'd go with a .com and not a keyword name ... a brandable .com.

Hi Suzanne, I was being a bit cheeky Because Alexa describes herself as a shoechick and I wondered if she had a shoe website! If she had then what would she use? Guess you've answered for her

lol ... and she's well known for being a shoechick. I had a shoe ecommerce store and asked her if she syndicated any shoe articles. Alas ... no. But I sold the site. It had a nice branded domain name.
