Stupid Question But I have to ask

I read a lot about Backup, I have been in the IM for long but as our network cares about backup etc, so never worried about it before..

I recently launched one discussion forum, I am hosting it with hostgator,,
Can anyone please tell me how this backup stuff work with them?
Do I have to manually do a backup myself or is it done automatically by hostgator...?

Your feedback will be much appreciated...

Think they only back up once a week so you are safer backing it up yourself, plus they charge a $15 fee to restore your site.

Backup policy, Do you provide backups?

The specific backup policy depends on what type of account you have. We do make weekly backups for all our servers except dedicated servers.
We can restore your web, email and database content from those per your request. However, this is NOT a procedure you should rely on to keep copies of your content safe; we recommend you make your own backups. Our backups are made every week on a random day, and only the newest backups are kept. We make no guarantees about our weekly backups, and we do require a $15 fee to restore the HostGator backups. If you can provide your own backup file, then the fee is $0 (free).

Every second, every content is important.
So I think u should think something about taking ur own back-ups.

No one has the headeache if u r in trouble.

Try to get the knowledge of taking ur own backups.
        thanks

HostGator does weekly backups & their backups will not backup any accounts over 20GB I believe.

    From their site:

We create our own weekly backups of shared servers of accounts that are under 20 GB and 100,000 inodes.
Now, with that being said, we have performed migrations from HostGator and typically we use the full backup utility, wget it from our servers & restore. We have had problems with accounts using 5-10GB with the manual backup utility - it doesn't work or backup the account.

I'd recommend that you either download copies of your files locally 2-3 times a week and/or use an alternative service such as:

Backomatic.com - Automated website backup service - supports cPanel, WHM, FTP (DirectAdmin) and MySQL.
    https://www.siteautobackup.com/
cPremote : cPanel/WHM remote/local rsync incremental backup plugin with 7 days retention

**I have not used any of these & cannot endorse the efficiency or security of them.

Even though a host may provide backups, it's always advised to keep your own copies as well in case they fail. My company provides daily, weekly & monthly backups both on-site & off-site and we still recommend keeping your own copies just in case ours happen to fail.

As far as i heard about backomatic.com and siteautobackup.com they're indeed great recommendations! As for cPremote we have that implemented into our reseller servers and all i can say is this plugin is doing a pretty good job.

Yep, decent systems there. Just keep an eye our on WHT for any security exploits on these. One of them has had problems in the past. Steven from Rack911 is usually the first to find them and is an amazing asset to the community with testing these. We chose to implement StoreGrid for our shared and reseller environments. A little more pricey though as it goes on annual payments and requires additional hardware & storage.

Open your CPannel and check out your BackUp wizard.

If you have question contact Host Gator, they have good support.

    My two pence worth!

If you are running a discussion forum, you cannot rely on your hosting provider to have up to the minute backups, and if it's on shared hosting with hostgator they won't have anything newer than a week old, and that's if they can find it.

VPS on the other hand automatically allows you to set up daily, weekly, monthly backups, but the price is a lot more than "Baby Croc" or "Reseller" hosting.

Your other back up options will depend on which forum software you are running.

Basically you need to make sure you have a backup of the mysql database, some forum systems allow the admin to log in to the "back end" and can download the database on an ad hock basis. SMF I know allows this.

Never ever, allow your backups to be controlled by your hosting company, your back ups should be under your control.

    You won't appreciate that last comment until you are reliant on your hosting company to restore your site. {phew! site restored, but it's like a week out of date}

Log in to your hosting via FTP
Download the public_html folder to your local computer

Log in to your cpanel account.
Do a full system / site back up
Do a full MysQL back up
    Go to PhPMyadmin
    Download the database.

Do that on a daily basis at a certain time each day and the furthest backup you will ever have to worry about is Yesterday.

It depends on your setup with them.

I have a dedicated Hostgator server that has two standalone hard drives, one is used just for backups and they are automatically done daily.

I do create my own backups from time to time though just to be safe.
