  The biggest downside is the person is being asked to 'Like' something (in essence give it a vote and let their friends know about it) without first seeing the content themselves.
  
  When searching Google I have come across many sites that have this in place and I have left every single one of them. First of all I don't want to 'Like' something before I have had a chance to check it out for myself and second of all I don't want all my Facebook friends knowing what I am looking at.

  Just had that happen this morning. I wouldn't say I was pre-sold but I was warmed up and interested in seeing what that site offered.
  
  Clicked on it only to find I had to do something (like it) to see the offer. Struck me as manipulation to get FB likes and my interest was gone. I left the site.
  
  I'm sure it works for some marketers and some products but I have to wonder if the "likes" are worth losing some of your potential buyers. Maybe they are - don't know.

Usually, a person driven to a page with a likegate is told before
hand what is behind the likegate. They land on the page presold,
and so it's generally a small hoop to jump through to like a page
in order to unlock content that you really want.

Without knowing ahead of time what I'm supposed to like, that's a downside. On the other hand we have Willie's explanation.....

If used correctly they can work nicely. For example on one site I use them to reveal coupon codes and it works quite well.

I'm running a contest for "The Hottest Women in Radio." There will be 40 pictures. I was thinking of using the plugin to "lock" the Top 5 photos....by the time somebody has scrolled through 35 pictures of Hot Women they would probably be sold right?

Also, do you happen to know what happens if:

1) Somebody visits who already "LIKES" my page
2) Somebody visits who doesn't have a Facebook page?

Wrong. I would never click those photos. Why? Because it doesn't matter how many hot women I've already seen, I still don't know what's behind the locked content. I cannot like something I have not seen. It's impossible to know if I will like it or not. I might love it, I might hate it, who knows? But getting blind Likes, IMO, is basically a cyberspace version of panhandling.
