Free or Paid hosting?

Hi,

Do you recommend free hosting or paid hosting? I saw many people complaining regarding free hosting is there seriously any issue with it?

I'm currently using highmarkhosting.com as a free hosting provider.

It seems to be working fine, but is there any threat to my files and etc?

In general free or budget hosting will not in the long run support the traffic level you are probably hoping to get.

However, if it is working fine for now and meets you needs then stick with it.

I have never even attempted to use FREE hosting
when it comes to running my online business.

It all depends what you are using it for, whether you
are just testing things out or if you are seeing if you
wish to to take things to the next level.

If you are serious about your business then I would
not hesitate for one minute to invest in PAID hosting.

You get fantastic customer/technical support with the
top hosting companies, it is very cheap to start with
    anyway $10 - $20 a month approximately...

...& you have peace of mind that your business is safe
and isn't going to be overtaken or wiped clean without any
    prior warning.

I just wouldn't take any chances with this & I hope you
choose the paid option if you are serious about your business.

    All the best
    Gavin

Don't waste your time with free hosting. Just pay a few dollars a month.

      This...

You never know when the host could just disappear. Although there is some shady web hosts. Going with a reputable paid web host service gives you that extra peace of mind.

In Free Hosting there is no security for your files and sites. There is also low number of resources like disk space, Bandwidth, Mysql Database etc. Many free hosting come with ad supported hosting.

It's no comparison here. PAID is better.

I was watching a Matt Cutts video on bad neighborhood hosting just yesterday, and if you watch it you'll discover that he specifically mentions "free" hosts as about the only hosts on which you're likely to suffer ranking issues based on being hosted in a bad neighborhood.

So... get yourself a cheap hosting account with a reputable host

Free hosting like 000webhost has its limits. After a certain amount of traffic, your website will go down. You can get hosting for as cheap as $3/month. Try JustHost. Use a coupon code and get even higher discount. I got hosting for 4 years for $100. If you want to build your website on a free platform, then try Blogger. Your blog can get deleted if you are really spammy but apart from that, it will perform well. Of course you wont have as much flexibility as wordpress but you will always be able to find a way around.

      ^^ This.

Free hosting is very unstable and it can also be very slow at times. People who are just getting started in the IM business are always looking for the cheapest solutions available. When it comes to setting up professional websites, you need professional hosting for fast load times and stability. I personally recommend Host Gator (10$ a month I think) for hosting plans.

Don't look for the cheapest solution - look for the BEST solution.

I also heard a lot of horror stories from people who use free hosting. For example, sometimes the hosting company decides to place advertisements on your website which makes the website look terrible and discourages visitors from sticking around.

If you have absolutely no money to invest in internet marketing, free hosting can be useful for practice. But, free hosting should never be a long term solution.

Okay in reply to this, which I saw only today, I would like to point out that most hosting companies, Hostgator, Justhost, DreamHost, Bluehost all have the same parent company. However their prices differ significantly and it would be wise to choose a hosting provider which is not only cheap but also has all the features. When I recommended JustHost, I found through research that it was both cheap and also had features that other hosting companies did not. You pay $2.95/month in your initial purchase. And if you use a coupon code, you get another 50% off on top of that. So for 4 years you pay something like a $100. After that the price is $4/month which is still cheaper than hostgator. When people say Hostgator or Blue Host is the best, they say it is because of the high affiliate pay out these companies pay. They are not really better than the cheaper host, but a lot of people promote it because of their high payout. The only con of JustHost when I purchased it was it didn't have windows hosting. But it very rare to see anybody use that feature. But when it comes to hostgator, apart from the price, I found that they didn't have a script library. BlueHost doesnt offer a monthly plan and they do not support international domains. DreamHost is even worse, as users report a lot of down time. They dont have a telephone customer service which may or maynot cause problems for you. They dont have 24/7 support. Frankly it all comes down to what you want in your hosting provider. But keep in mind the expensive hosting might not always be the best as the person who made a comment on my post seems to suggest.

Dont risk your business by placing it in space that you dont own or have control of. You wouldn't do it in the offline world and doing it online is not smart either. Just spend and invest in your business. It will always work out better that way. I have seen and heard many guys loose their sites with sketchy or no explanation given by these free hosts. Its damn frustrating.

Hosting is an integrate part of my business. My websites would not exist without a good hosting provider, so I won't even think about getting a free or cheap host.

I once bought a cheap host for my websites. Everything was fine for a few months and then they had downtime issues almost every day. They gave all sorts of excuses for it too.

I learned my lesson, and I'm never going down that route again.

I have never used a FREE hosting and won't,
with paid hosting you are in-charge of your site
but with a free hosting you can wake up one day
that your site is not available on the web or sometimes
you get some ads that will piss off your visitors and
that you don't want. If you are really serious about
your online business then paid hosting is the goal.

Not only should you never use free hosting for a business site, you should never use budget hosting (like godaddy). I've seen SEO on sites drop drastically because of GoDaddy hosting. Even HostGator or DreamHost is better than that. If youre serious about your business then invest in it seriously. You don't need to go crazy... but $5/mo hosting is going to not be worth much

I think you always should use paid hosting as if something went wrong you can expect a support from you hosting company. Free hosting will not provide any support. So be wise and choose a paid hosting. I recommended to use hostgator for your sites.

I would suggest the paid route for hosting, you don't want to host with a free host because when technical issues arise their customer support may not be up to par to deal with it also security concerns with free hosting. They may not put as much emphasis on protecting your sites because it is afterall free.

The usual reason is that people are starting off either without any money at all (it is just about possible to do that successfully, though it's not easy at all), or they're in a country from which their credit-cards aren't accepted online and they have no access to a PayPal account either (there are some geographical limitations).

It's clearly true that paid hosting, overall, is going to be more reliable than free hosting.

It's also true that there are some pretty good, well-established, safe-to-use free hosts whose business model comprises impressing people so much with the reliability of the free service that they stay for paid upgrades, later.

The times that I recommend free hosting are for people to whom paid hosting (for whatever reasons) isn't at the moment an available option, and some of the better free hosts - like Byethost, 000WebHost and Freehostia - are clearly far, far better than the nightmare alternatives which those people will typically otherwise try (such as Blogspot :p ). And they don't put any advertising/promotional stuff of their own on your pages, either.

Hi Alexa, I notice you have mentioned these same freehosts a few times in previous posts. I am just curious, do you mention them as a recommendation or just as a reference? I don't know (or care for that matter) if you somehow are an affiliate with them or something, but I am genuinely interested if any of these hosts (particularly byethost) are actually viable.

        Thanks.

I think free hosting is fine for you to test out ideas. Especially with the hosts that allow you to install Wordpress. Just as free as using wordpress.com, but much more control. You can always upgrade to a paid service or back-up and migrate your site to a new paid host when your traffic/needs outgrow the restrictions on the free account.

You can't compare as each of them have their own stand.

Free hosting is especially recommended to the new comers and who have less budget to spend on web hosting. But with time when you'd have started getting visitors you should switch to paid hosting. Because if you don't then you might suffer from various issues like bandwidth exceeds, security etc.

So the moral of story is if you can afford then you should start with paid hosting and if you can't then start with free hosting but with time when you start earning revenue through it, upgrade your plan to paid hosting or upgrade bandwidth and added additional security measures

Well you've answered your own question

Free hosting is not meant for busy websites or something you depend on. If you're making a income, buy hosting. You'll want to maximize your uptime. Free web hosting will have more downtime than paid (generally. some paid hosts have a string of bad luck it seems).
