I Need Tips On How To Engage Customers And Get Conversions

I have a brick and mortar business. My website is currently getting around 60-80 unique visitors a day. The average time on my website is around 3 minutes. The problem is my business is only receiving maybe one call a day from this and no emails. What are some other techniques to engage customers on my site and to keep these customers around longer or coming back?

What does your site currently have? Does it have videos and content explaining your service, and do you have content that makes people believe that you are an expert at what you do?

Also, how professional is your website? Your website design pays a big part in people trusting you enough to buying from you.

I own an auction house. Not like a penny auction but a local auction company. I have some videos at the bottom of the page. My website is my signature if you could let me know your opinion on the professionalism of it please.

    Thanks

    Justin,

First and foremost I would look at why people are coming to your website and how they are getting there.

I remember a good case study of the official website for the Grand Canyon some years ago. They were getting a ton of traffic to the site but none of it was converting into visitors or bookings. What they later found by doing some research was that the large majority of their visitors were actually school kids doing research for school assignments or projects.

So you should at the very least have some form of analytics installed. That should show you the websites people are coming from to get to yours and also the most common keyword phrases people are searching to get to your site. Have a look at that data and see what most people are actually looking for. Then you can better tailor your content and message to those people.

I have analytics and a lot of my traffic is coming from sources that are related to my business and places i want to get traffic from. Im just confused because people are spending a good amount of time on my site and the people are coming from sources i want them coming from, but im just not getting the calls or emails that i thought i would get.

      Justin,

I understand they are spending a lot of time on the site but so were the kids researching their school projects on the Grand Canyon site. They were spending a ton of time but they were not buying anything or filling in any forms because they were there for a different purpose.

So I would really drill down and see what it is your typical visitor is actually looking for and what they are spending most of their time looking at on your site.

I also just went to the site in your signature (I'm assuming that is the one we are talking about) and all I could see was a little box in the top right hand sidebar to enter their email. Apart from that how are you wanting people to contact you?

On your item pages I would have something that maybe pops up when people go to leave the page that says... "Interested in this item? Submit your enquiry now" or 'Submit Your Bid Now' or something like that. More in your face than just a contact us link.

      Hey Justin,

Jerry here from JayhMarketing.com. The information I'm about to give you would normally cost one of my consultation clients upwards of $2500. Continue reading, because this one's on the house!

I've looked into your site with my marketing consulting microscope and have decided to shoot you over a few ideas to get your business booming online.

Your main channel is trying to sell a service.... So here's a rough plan of action...

      Get your site redesigned. $300 - $3,000

explain to visitor what you do with an explainer video (2 min animated video... high viewer retention, with motivating script & professional voice over) <<< High impact Call to Action at the end. $997 - $2,500.

REMOVE the video ads. as well as the clutter. You're not building a blog, you're promoting a valuable professional & people oriented service. $0

Youtube channel should offer a look inside your current auctions.... use an employee or confident senior member to host behind the scenes look at planning, setting up, and executing these auctions... $0

Make 3 to 4 min total length videos using clips and voice over. $0<< using in-house talent

use you Facebook page to engage individuals who like going to auctions.... this may cost a lot to find this audience, but, it's worth it $50 -$500 to grow a base.

Use Google+ to target industries you would usually offer your services to or simply to network with other auction houses $0

Your Pinterest page has zero posts.... start posting past, current & upcoming auction items on your board and follow others with similar interests to gain traction there. $0

Justin, if you really care about this business succeeding, you should really consider a complete overhaul of the entire site and how it educates the visitor & leads them to the contact instructions, as well as, a complete revamping of your company's social presence.

Your visitors are the ones that are confused.... They come looking for a solution, and then they spend all that time digging for it... soon thereafter, they go back to google and check out your competitor's site.

Shoot me a PM to discuss the ideas I've presented here. And, together, we'll get those visitors back and buying!

      Regards,
      Jerry

Thanks. I did have originally a popup box when you first went to the page asking people to join our mailing list, but noticed it was getting a lot of X and my bounce rate went up. I have it set now that it comes up when they visit 3 pages. I appreciate the info though, ill have to test some of those ideas out and see if i can convert them out better.

Justin, exit pops are better I find because they only show when people are about to leave a page.

Also I don't think your newsletter offer is very enticing. Is that really what your target market wants? How about updates on new items? A free video or guide on how to outbid other people? I'm not in your market so don't know the best things you could offer but you definitely need a better offer than just a newsletter. Very few people are going to bite at that.

You have too much stuff on your site. You run an auction business, people want to see stuff that is being auctioned off, not articles. Clean up your site to look like a brick and mortar site, not an article site.

My thoughts exactly. Put in pictures of items that sell oftentimes in your brick and mortar shop. This am sure will get customers curious enough to email or call you.

it look's like a blog not a website ! If you are planning to provide product/services then just add a blog to the site. And create a stunning website that visitor can see when they visit your website.

For now the site is't appealing.

    1. What is the main purpose of this website?
    2. What do you want people to DO when they hit your website?
    3. What are your onsite goals?
    4. What is your current conversion rates?
    5. What are you tracking?

Your site is a mess. There is far too much uncecessary "stuff" all over the place. Answer those questions above -most importantly, #1.

Once you can answer that clearly, then you can start implementing a strategy.

Anything that distracts from your goal should be removed.

Justin, given that you're running a traditional bricks and mortar style business (and not just a thin affiliate site) I would strongly recommend that you hire a qualified professional to do this for you. It makes no sense to me why you're choosing do this yourself. You will only become confused and frustrated - especially asking here on a public forum where you're going to get 101 different 'opinions'.

Get in touch with John Logar, he is an expert at this stuff. He is not cheap, but he will get you results.

You need to add some features to your site. It look's like a blog.

If you are getting 70 visitors per day to a product/service website. You must get some conversions, if you are't getting.. That's strange !

So i would suggest to improve your website. content and design.

    Thanks

I would suggest few tweaks to your website like adding a huge call to action banner above the fold.

Also consider giving away a free guide. For example a guide to Antique Auctions. or Don't go to another auction until you read this free report. You give away this report in exchange for their info like email/phone/address.

Try to post some youtube videos from your auctions.

Think through who is arriving at your site and what kind of information
they're likely to be looking for.

    Also your goals.

Are you trying to get more people who will bid at your auctions as a first
priority or trying to get more people who will list items to sell at your
    auctions.

The biggest problem I see with your home page is that's it's all about you.

You really want to focus in on why your visitors should do business with you...
in other words make it all about THEM and their problems.

One way that might help turn your visitors into clients is to have a report
(or two) eg. "7 Insider Secrets To Getting The Best Price When You Sell
At An Auction" or "7 Keys To Buying What you want At THe best Price
at an auction." or "7 Secrets To Choosing the Perfect Auction House For
    Your Needs."

Or something along those lines. Hiring a good direct response copywriter to help you with
your site and reports like these is probably a wise move.

You might also have some kind of email course delivered automatically by
    email autoresponder.

You do have a call to action of sorts on your home page
"Contact us today by calling 734-775-0227"
but you're missing information on why they should call you
and detail on what will happen when they do.

Many of your best prospects haven't listed at auctions
before and they're anxious about the process.

If you educate them about what they can expect and the
ins and outs of the process they're going to trust you more
and be far more likely to list with you.

    Kindest regards,
    Andrew Cavanagh

Live chat may be a solution for your site. It enables you to track and engage visitors in real time. You can even reach out visitors proactively, which enables you to make use of every opportunity. And it has been proved an effective tool to improve sales conversion.

Since your site is built on WordPress, you can install chat plugins directly. You can choose one based on your needs. And the number of downloads can be another reference. The top 3 are ClickDesk, Comm100 Live Chat, Zopim.

Since picking up the phone and calling someone takes more effort than other engaging options online; we use chat support.

Placing an obvious chat support icon on your pages can increase inquires. Plus, you can chat with several people at the same time.

7 years ago we started offline and had a call center, etc. We happened to try out chat support on our site and found it was better at getting customers to contact us then the call center. Eventually we fired the call center and hired more chat agents.

We use provide support for our site. But there are lots of options out there. Give that a try.

While I agree on most of the great suggestions here, I'd like to add more:

    1. Get a LinkeIn account. It's more professional social site, where you can be connected with people with the same interest.

    2. Have you tried releasing a press release for your upcoming auctions? If not, then I suggest to have one; it will be a big help.

    3. Your tagline says, "Everything we touch, turns to sold." Although this seems to be interesting, but what about your customers?

    Hope that helps.

    First are these visitors targeted?

Second do you have a good call to action.. Looks like your conversion is not that great..

Also 80 visitors per day is not that much...

I would suggest posting in the copywriting section and asking for feedback on your website.

First off thank you everyone for the advice so far. I always thought my website was kind of cluttered, but i figured customers would want to see more about what we do and who we are and all the services we have to offer. I have checked out some competitors websites and they seem very streamlined, not a ton on them, but those are companies that are doing very well. Im going to try and implement some of these and see what we can do to make this better.

    Thanks again!

Customers only want to see the merchandise, showing them what they want, and products that have been won for a cheap price, will go along way. If you look at fast food websites, you will see they have their food up front, and how you can find a location. You confuse your visitors by adding too writing, add that stuff to the footer.

Justin, if you're focusing on the website, then you're missing the point entirely.

It's not just about the website - you must have an overall online marketing strategy.

Anyone can build you a $500 website. My 12 year old cousin can. But that's not going to compare with someone that charges $20,000 and increases your businesses revenue by 30% per year.

You don't want a website. You want customers and sales. Just like every other business owner does. A website is just a tool that affords you that. Much like the saying "You don't want the drill, you just need the hole".

Shift your mindset away from "web design", and think about the bigger picture.

      Sales, leads, conversions, marketing, promotions.

Not the color of the menus or what photos to put on the about us page.

First of all you need to establish a believable target. Just saying I need more conversions is not enough. What is a Good Conversion Rate in your case?

A 2% conversion rate would be a good starting point I think and then you can track the effect that the changes you make have on the conversion rate.

Incidentally what does everybody here think is a good average conversion rate: 1) for contact/emails/phone calls, and 2) for actual sales?

provide them value and try to capture their contact details maybe try using a pop up optin script or even and exit pop to capture their details before they leave your site. The more personal you can make it the better. Make the visitor feel like your site is talking to them...and only them. Maybe add some video of you talking and describing how your services can help them. People always want to know what's in it for them.

I know in my area that a lot of my clients tell me they'd like to have a sale of their items but are hesitant to have strangers come to their home for an open sale. That can be a good market to focus on. Also, I see that in craigslist in the garage sale section there are a number of estate sale private owners as well as company listings. That may be a place to study.

I checked out your site, and noticed a couple of things...

It seems that you have two markets you need to reach. Buyers and sellers. I would also add the people who influence the sellers - family attorneys, financial counselors, life insurance agents, etc.

Your home page may need to present two optional paths - buyer and seller, where you provide information tailored to each segment of your market. Use networks like LinkedIn to connect with the influencers (aka 'referrers').

I checked several pages, and it looks like you are trying desperately to appear cold and corporate. It's all about the 'royal we' - we do this, we provide that, we have something else. Turn that into specific 'you-oriented' benefits. A good copywriter can help you with this.

I clicked on the Current Auctions menu item from the home page. I went to a page that simply said 'click this link for our current auctions', which directed me to a third-party site without warning. If I were looking to buy, and I wasn't familiar with the service you use, my warning system would be going nuts. Better to use that intermediate page to explain what's coming next - the redirect and WHY. Reassure people and help them know what to expect.

      Good luck to you...

A lot less cluttered, but still way too much "we" language. Under 'sellers', do people really want to "get rid of" their possessions? Or do they want to sell them at the highest price for the lowest effort.

You may want to think about calling a few satisfied customers and ask them what you did that made them choose you. And what you did that made them 'satisfied' or 'happy' customers. Those will be your real benefits.

Then work on framing them as "you" statements.

"You'll find that things are a lot less overwhelming when you partner with an auction business that understands what you are going through. We take your consignment and get you the best prices. We know that in times like this there can be a cash pinch, so sometimes you can even get an advance on your consignment, or let us buy it outright and take all the worries off your shoulders..."

That's just a quickie off the top of my head, but compare it to what you have now.

Offer alot of content, and at the end of each piece of content, leave your contact info and even provide a freebie for giving you a call or emailing you for your services.

Sorry just my opinion but it looks worst

      Gray background
Irritating floater wanting me to share the gray background and black text
I went to read when your next auction was and it disappeared with some other announcement

There's not enough color, text and happy people to make me want to stay on the site or call you. As far as I know, this is your personality I don't want to talk to you on the phone.

Getting me to click on something is a small sales pitch itself. I saw nothing that made me want to click.

Is it in your budget to hire someone?

      Sorry

      Rick

I use Twitter to engage my customers. When I tweet out a link I instantly receive many website visits. Just a few minutes ago I tweeted out a link, and got 75 hits from Twitter.

I know, I've seen it before. People more interested in a fast buck as opposed to developing a good, financially profitable for both parties, long term relationship. If you go to church check the business directory of the congregation. I advertise there myself for computer lessons and internet help. If you don't care about locally there are some good people here on this forum.

If the guy/gal you speak with, email, PM, asks you questions and really tries to get to know you and your business, you found the right guy/gal.

A video with a popup offer for a free consultation depending on what you offer. A contest would engage people more.
